"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

No doubt, with every Spartan on the ground and all the other 385,421,100 available military manpower it was a guaranteed victory.

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

It wouldn't matter because the result would still be the same.

It is possible to commit no errors and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.

Cheeto is the only one among you that doesn't suck.

No. It wouldn't, because the situation is different. If the Covenant had simply landed an army and took their fleet away, would the UNSC Army-Marines be able to defeat them? The answer is yes. The Covenant have never been truly great strategists, using their vast numbers to simply overwhelm the humans. The books clearly show that, on the ground, the UNSC can hold their own, but then the Covenant pull their forces out and glass from orbit, where the UNSC can't even put up a good fight.

To be fair, the Covenant don't really fight to hold the planet, though, just to keep the UNSC at bay until they find whatever artifact they were looking for. So, even though the books say that the UNSC is highly competent on the ground, if the Covenant had a different objective, things may have been different on the ground...

with hundreds of spartan II's on the ground, it is a no-brainer.

wat.

And no, the USNC couldn't have held their ground, atleast I don't think so. If the 700 Covenant ships at Reach had deployed all of their troops, the UNSC would've still been overwhelmed.

come on caboose it was a typo that even 343 stated.

And if there really were 700 ships then the battle would have been more like a half hour in space and a week on the ground.

  • 05.20.2011 9:18 AM PDT

I think the Covenant would've still won 'cause they have outside resources. They could always ask for more troops and land vehicles. The UNSC stuck in the planet would have to make use of the resources they have.

even with just 3 spartan teams. The prologue of The Fall of Reach depicts it perfectly.

"The Chief had killed the enemy on the ground--shot them, stabbed them, and broken them with his own two hands. On the ground, the Spartans always won. The problem was, the Spartans couldn't take their fight into space. Every minor victory on the ground turned into a major defeat in orbit."

-The Fall of Reach
pg. 9 (Pre-redaction)

This is during their battle on Jericho VII. Mind you, there were only 36 Covenant ships, but there were only about 15 Spartans and Jericho VII wasn't a highly populated planet.

If the battle of Reach was fought solely on the ground, the UNSC would have kicked the Covenant's ass.

I admit I keep using the 700 number because it's the most recent number given in the new Fall of Reach. If 343 stated it was a typo I was unaware, I thought the only typo was the "2542" number everywhere.

Either way, 314(that was the original number, right?) ships would still overwhelm the UNSC.

ahh but alas we must come to our original bearings. if they dumped their troops and left, there would be no space battle would there? so would we win on the ground?

  • 05.20.2011 10:21 AM PDT

If the Battle of Reach was fought solely on the ground, then yeah, the Covenant would be retreating from a major ass whooping with their tales between their legs like a whipped dog.

  • 05.20.2011 10:23 AM PDT

i hate to point out sigma octanus IV. we won but only just. we had to blow up our own city after taking a major ass whooping. that being said this is Reach. BUT, that being said even just 314 ships is many many more covies then was on sigma.

I don't know. Even with 700 ships, would it be enough to combat 350 million soldiers?

Bigger, faster, stronger, better weapons, strong power armor, tactically minded beast, and if they are any higher than blue they have ridiculous combat experience. I find it unlikely a squad of marines could take on two without heavy weapons or vehicles.

Do y'all think the UNSC could've won the battle for Reach if it were purely a ground campaign?
In FoR, the UNSC was kicking covenant ass in space with the super MACs. The covenant, however, managed to land and win the ground battle over the generators. After that, they could win in space.

Kind of strange, considering that the book began with "on the ground, the spartans always won".

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Which kinda shows how easy it is to circumvent the Super MACs.
