I think of Halo: Reach as a nice what could have happened story. I ignore it when I think of canon.

You have an opinion about the canon errors in Reach?

It's the top forum topic on the side.

His stance being Halo Reach took canon and shredded it entirely, and events unrelated are now massively different or could be.

Who doesn't wiseass, look at the thread you're in.

Besides, the rumor is that there's a definitive edition(ergo 3rd re-release of TFoR) coming. Supposedly, the definitive edition of First Strike is changed to coincide with the game canon, meaning that the new release of TFoR this late June will also be drastically changed to coincide with the retarded game canon.

By then, Halo is a dead series as far as I'm concerned.

Which I've promptly ignored for the most part because he ALWAYS act's like that when something new to Halo releases.

I chose the 3rd.

One, TFoR explained that the Covenant found Reach after a tracking device attached itself to the UNSC Iroquois after the battle of Sigma Octanus IV.
In Halo: Reach, the Winter Contingency mission takes place before the battle of Sigma Octanus IV.

Two, In TFoR, the PoA jupped in to slipspace just after 06:47 August 30th 2552.
The Pillar of Autumn mission takes place at 16:52, ten hours after the PoA left the system.

Three, Bungie's Personnel section for Reach, states the spartans of Noble team's ages. In Ghosts of Onyx, it states that children where taken at the ages of 4 to 6.
Cat and Jun would have been 7, Emile would have been 8 and Carter would have been 11

Personaly, im a more disapointed by Bungie's complete disregard for the canon that has been establishing itself for nearly 10 years.

It seems to me, that Bungie got bored of Halo, decided to make a game that punched the canon in the face, and then did a runner, leaving 343I and the rest of the Halo comunity to pick up the pieces.

I can easily counter all three of your points.

1. No it doesn't, the Battle of Sigma Octanus takes place between July 18-19th, and then the mission Winter Contingency in Reach takes place on July 24th, your point is moot.

2. Minor retcon on the timing, much the same as retconning when the Elites, Brutes, and Hunters were first encountered during the war.

3. IIRC, it said around the ages of 4-6, seven is only one number higher than six and still fits the parameter. And you're not factoring in cryo-sleep, these kids would have been shunted around from planet to planet probably, so their chronological ages and their biological ages would not match up. Like for instance Master Chief is about 40 years old chronologically, but biologically he's somewhere close to his early 30s. or take Sgt. Johnson, he's something 80 years old chronologically, and yet physically he's only somewhere between his 40s and 60s.

If you think that you obviously know nothing of how Bungie treats its projects and its community, what you described is something completely and totally out of character for them.

Why thank you my good sir or madame. While there are some inconsistencies, none of them are anything the fans can't figure out for themselves.

I still don't understand why the covenant army isn't talking english.

If noble has Mark V then they should have the same be able to translate some words. Not to mention that truth said ti is standard for all of the covenant to know and speak the language of the enemy. Yet they don't in reach.

While bungie said "this is to make them scarier" (which i don't understand seeing how nearly every level is in the day time) It doesn't fit.

Have the covenant on one side of the planet speaks english, the other side doesn't.

I do not even know why they bothered with that. They have characterised the Covenant so much now, we know what they are really like. They have lost that mystery and fear factor that they once perhaps had. In order to make them scary they would have to undo everything that they have made the Covenant into so far. Thank god they did not go that far to justify the game.

Probably wanted to keep it closer to the first game lore-wise. The only species you could really understand were the grunts. Wish that wasn't changed...

Covenant probably speak our language when they have human prisoners and vice-versa. Would be the only time I see the Covenant doing that.

The first message they sent to us was in clear english, not to mention that reach is 20 years into the war.

The only races that can't speak english are jackals, drones, and engineers.

I wont knock out hunters because we still aren't quite sure how they communicate. (yes i did read ghost of onyx)

Been awhile since I last read TFoR but wasn't that a very rough translation at the time? And not only that, wasn't the Covenant studying humanity before first contact was made?

No, it was pure english and i remember it it perfectly

'Your destruction is the will of the gods and we are their instruments."

And no they weren't studying us, this was before contact harvest came out and explained everything (which i am getting all this from).

They speak english so they can understand us on the battlefield, taunt us, and understand what we are saying.

Yes i know you can understand something without speaking it, but it is more understandable if you read the language. The covenant have been speaking english during the entire war, something reach has changed. and before coma trys to say anything I do understand Halo CEs stance on this matter.

But that doesn't change the fact that it was a great series while it lasted. Some of the inconsistencies can be explained by the original war in the first series taking a different turn (they later made Caprica as backstory to the wars).

I apologize in advance if I'm misreading your post but here's the quote pulled from the older version of the book (2001).

Posted by:TFoR, Page 98
John was awestruck. He stood.
"Yes Spartan?" Stanforth asked.
"Sir, is this a translation?"
"No," the Admiral replied. "They broadcast this to us in our language. We believe they used some kind of translation system to prepare the message...but it means they've been studying us for some time."

Makes it seem like they have been studying us for a bit. I could be reading that completely wrong but it would make sense, as a telescope picked up High Charity before the Harvest event (picture in Halsey's journal, dated sometime in 2524).

Posted by: grey101

And I understand that but they would have no need to taunt us if their presence on the planet is a morale killer in itself. I'd only see them taunting us if they were going room to room, searching for survivors or hunting down stragglers.

A lot of what you hear in the games would be the translation software picking up the speech from Covenant soldiers (minus grunts). I do see where you're coming from though.
