Am I supposed to write something funny here?

So I have seen people here hope that 343 declares Halo: Reach non-canon, mainly because of the change in dates of the battle. (Yeah, I know people have said that you can fit the stuff into existing canon, but this is not about it)

So, 343 has been around for years, and they have the control over Halo, so wouldn't that logically mean that they saw the script of Reach before the point it couldn't be changed? And if they saw it, it means that they were ok with it.

So, did I make sense? And if I'm correct, What does it mean? It would atleast mean that 343 had part in ruining the story many people apparently preferred (tFoR). Wouldn't that make them as bad as Bungie?

BTW, I'm fine with month-long battle.

Also has 343 commented Reach's story or stuff like that? If they have, link please.

“We are the Mirratord. We strike with speed and stealth. Our enemies will not see their deaths. They will not know their fate. In darkness, we will see light. In light, we will see darkness. No matter the location, we will see victory. If we fail, no one will know. Like a ghost, our presence is a mystery. For the honor of the mirratord" join the Mirratord

They didn't need to approve it, they didn't have control over Halo until after Reach

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Just make it Non-Canon

The people who care about canon would be happy.

The people who don't, would not care.

Win-Win.

They have released a video on waypoint talking about the events of LNOS, and going directly into the events on the books battle.(Aka, describing the game and book versions alongside each other.)

I can find the link in a short bit if you want.

Proof? Microsoft owns halo, has always owned. And 343 Industries has existed since 2007, and is Microsofts Halo-company. And they had published stuff before. So they had some control. Why not complete control?

  • 05.21.2011 1:15 PM PDT

They've only had minimal control over the Halo IP until Reach came out, now the keys to the Halo Kingdom have officially been handed over (I think). I know 343i didn't get to have a say in the making of Reach, it was Bungie's project and Bungie was still under contract with Microsoft and in control of Halo until they published Reach.

I don't know the link, but there are several videos on Halo Waypoint (link here) that talk about both events from Halo: Reach and from TFoR on an equally canonical status.

Nor does your assumption, you assumed that nobody who's been arguing that Reach didn't break canon wouldn't care if the game was declared non-canon. I can't say I speak for all of us, but I would care to some degree, I wouldn't start -blam!-ing about it if it was, but I would be slightly disappointed as that's the lazy way out and just isn't satisfying, I don't want to play or read something that is completely non-canon and adds nothing to the Halo universe as a whole.

Video talking about the game and the book both in canon.

What Assumption do you talk about? I have not made a single one here.

I agree with you that it would be lazy to do that, but Reach was fairly lazy too. I know they tried to fix it with Halsey's journal, but IMO it really doesn't fix it well at all. What I think should be done is a short story done slightly like Cole's was in Evolutions. Reports from people with the highest clearance in ONI explaining how it was covered up. Doing that i think would make the majority of us happy.

Going "Halo Reach's campaign was just an ONI coverup made to boost morale." is more lazy...

That's the sort of thing I'm talking about, that's basically declaring it non-canon, and regardless of the method it is done (whether someone says in an interview "Reach is non canon" or goes into detail of ONI stretching the facts and covering up details), I still think it's all very lazy and I know it would leave me very unsatisfied, as well as a lot of other people. I'm sure there are a lot of other people who are not entirely fans of Reach for the inconsistencies between it and TFoR that would be disappointed with that approach too.

I must of not been clear. I meant more of how they kept it a secret for a month and other inconsistencies between TFoR and Reach.

I think my brain must not be firing on all cylinders or something today, because I'm still not entirely sure what you mean :/ I'm pretty sure you're not saying that Halo: Reach should be retconned or anything, but I'm confused.

Well considering that in TFoR the battle didn't start till August 31st and in Reach it started July 24th, if they were to coexist (which would be the best solution) a cover up would have needed to happen.

ONI would have to go to great lengths to do this. IMO this is the only real way to make them ever work together. They were probably hoping that it would only be a small group of covies.

After Reach had fallen people would most likely find out and would also question why it was done. keep in mind other than the soldiers on the ground not many people would have originally.

So I am suggesting that a short story much like The Impossible Life and the Possible Death of Preston J. Cole be done. a series of reports explaining how it was kept a secret and why. It could maybe even be a court marshal taking place.
EDIT- other smaller inconsistencies could also be explained in this examples: PoA, Noble Team ages, etc.

Actually, the battle didn't start truly until the LNOS was destroyed...

Ah ok, I get what you're saying now. Something talking about how they were able to keep most people in the dark about the Covenant presences on Reach until the 30th of August, gotcha.

well covenant presence then. not much of a difference, they still have to hide it

It is possible to commit no errors and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.

Cheeto is the only one among you that doesn't suck.

Winter Contingency apparently, according to those videos posted earlier, puts the entire planet in an information blackout. Only essential personnel would know about the Covenant. So, knowing that, it completely preserves the timeline of the novel. Uppercut may have lasted the majority of a month, but I suppose the rest of Reach could have fallen in that last day with the arrival of the Covenant fleet.
