Subject: What if... you get to play as an ONI officer/agent like Dare?

"A LIE is a LIE"

- Truly intelligent and deep Black ops trailer

This thread evolved from my other ODST 2 thread.

Dare was a special agent for ONI as-well as an ODST. She was tasked with extremely special missions, cleaning up classified stuff for ONI and going deep into the secrets of new Mombassa.
So, wouldn't it be cool if you could play as a "Special agent of ONI" like dare, where you would undertake classified and secret missions, involving assassinations, flood outbreaks, gathering classified intel, "stalking" spartan and ODST squads and even investigating forerunner places of interest.

Special agents would be like the human version of the arbiter, taking out the garbage for ONI. A game based of these ODST's should spawn a huge timeline, from the Insurrectionists, to the start of the covenant war to the flood outbreak.

Perhaps ever a mission where you are in a ONI prowler stalking the POA or FUD as they arrive at halo would be cool.

I couldn't stand playing as an ONI operative. They're such -blam!-s in the books for the most part.

I could stand it if you got to make moral choices or if it was like what you just suggested.

I'd love it! I sat a bit straighter when I saw this thread. I want to deal with that kind of stuff. It would be good if they gave us a big sandbox and if we had to improvise many times, instead of a rail game, [other than really important parts of the game]. I'll try to elaborate later maybe.

it sounds like a good idea, although in order for it to be successful it'd need to be properly done.

i.e. if you were following a ODST or Spartan squad, u'd have to actually watch them moving along as the mission progresses. etc

Bottome line, I'd enjoy a game like this "taking out ONI's trash" as an agent, kind of has a cold calculating feeling to it... something different for sure, but it would need to be done properly and require some effort/imagination.

Then again the ability to actually improvise would truly add to the experience. But i guess if we go down this path, we could quickly find ourselves in a fps rpg...

ONI would be your ally.

Frankly, you would get the best intelligence around

Salutations. I am Beta.
I am glad you have decided to read this to learn more about me.
Where to begin...?
My dreams to begin a game designer started after watching Halo 2's limited edition behind-the-scenes look at the making of Halo 2.
Bungie's spirit inspired me and helped me acquire my fervor for creation. To them, I forever owe my allegiance and love.
From Marathon and Halo to whatever lies beyond the horizon, I will forever be a Bungie Bro.
See you Starside.

What do you mean no allies? You can have fellow ONI agents at your side, a squad of Marines, Hell you could have a whole platoon of Spartans behind you. Doesn't mean the relationship is based on mutual trust, but ONI takes care of their people.

What? ODST took place in one location, and you played as a rookie ODST.

My concept is to actually play as a ONI operative and instead of one location, you play over a huge timeline from the rebels to the flood.

Completely different story, new characters, new enemies (changes the gameplay) new environments, experimental weapons & vehicles, you get it

It seems you cant see the potential of my concept. This is only an idea, not a fully fledged game, so I cant come up with all the ideas for new features.

Use your damn imagination man!

Says the man asking for another ODST...

Let me explain: any sequel of a previous game of course would have new environments and models within them, as such your idea seems very like a sequel to ODST.

We did the covert stuff in ODST, heck we did it in the Halo games as well. It wouldn't be that radically different other than covering a new story.

You seem close minded to me. Narrow.

Did the silencers do anything? Nope!

Erm, Bungie failed on almost all accounts to make a proper covert mission. ODST had stealth roots, but eventually you'll end up going all guns blazing on the enemy. Even the silencer didn't work!
Ever played perfect dark or hitman games? that was real covert stuff, it actually required you to use various gadgets, hack enemy electronics, avoid enemies at all costs (or fail the mission) and it required the player to use vents, weird and interesting routes and whatnot. Halo games had none of this.

You DO lack imagination. Think about the story and gameplay potential for a game that depicts ONI's most secretive missions.

Well, ODST's silencers did work, but the AI scripting caused them to know where you were after killing somebody most of the time. (Unless you mean the sound which was for player benefit).

My only concern would be that ONI is portrayed correctly, and not this evil group people seem to view ONI as.

Imagine, you're in a city, big tall building. It's the night. You're trying to catch this guy but you don't find him. An insurectionist helicopter comes right next to your window and starts firing. You roll for cover and a few guys burst in from the door. You need to kill them. Then, you have to get rid of the gunner. You can use a smoke grenade or a flashbang if you want. Then a cutscene comes in and you jump into the helicopter and kill the gunner then take control of the helicopter. You then take control of it and have to track this innie driving a car. When you get close to him, you are shot by a rocket launcher and you eject. You activate the parachute and land near the wreckage of the helicopter. The police gives you a car and you go to his location. The SI guides you and you get inside the building using stealth. You have your silenced pistol and other stuff.

Ever seen blade runner?

I don't think so. Then you have to go in and you're giving a schematic of the place using your VISR mode. You can use vents, corridors, pretty much anyway without getting spotted to reach your target.

My imagination is fine. I understand what you are talking about, simply what I am saying is that it would not be that revolutionary and would be very alike to other past games made.

Sure what you say is cool, but there is nothing inherently thrilling or amazing about the concept.

Halo ODST and Reach tried to be about convert things, but the fact was Spartan 117 pretty much took care of everything uncovertly.

And don't throw at me the fact that I need to use my imagination to make it intense, one can throw their imagination at anything to make it intense, your ideas simply bring nothing really that new to the table.

ODST and Reach aren't really covert much... on the covert part... So don't even try Buggy.

  • 05.22.2011 12:46 PM PDT

My name is Legion, for we are many.

LA Noire/Splinter Cell styled-Halo? Sounds fun...but Bungie isn't big on stealth or detective missions. ODST set the basis but it didn't seem fully refined.
