Subject: Why didn't the PoA follow the Cole Protocol?

"If any UNSC ship is boarded or in danger of being captured, it is to self destruct."

The Pillar of Autumn was boarded by Covenant and in danger of being captured, why did it never self destruct? Simple question.
Sure Cortana followed the protocol by purging all information, but why didn't she detonate the Autumn?

She couldn't with everyone on it, she still has to follow the Laws of Robotics, a machine, or in her case AI, can not harm a human.

Of course it would be after everyone evacuated.

Since she wasn't on it, I don't think she could. I'm not sure, but I think she was hoping it would crash and burn on Halo in the process of it landing.

In Fist Strike she could make copies of herself, she could have easily left one to do it.

In Fist Strike she could make copies of herself, she could have easily left one to do it.

She only gained that ability after encountering a Covenant AI after Alpha Halo was destroyed. Yes, Halsey split her in Reach, but she didn't do it herself.

A timed self destruct? Which is what destroyed Alpha Halo in the first place?

A more pertinent question would be: If as Halo: Reach says Reach was invaded a month earlier than was previously stated why didn't the entire planet enact the Protocol?

They probably did for the info regarding Earth and other classified info. However, they can't blow everything up some things needs to stay on for the war.

1, It's Cortana. You're not going to blow Cortana up.

2, The PoA was on a mission to Halo, probably to save humanity. You're going to blow up Humanity's last chance for survival. (in that time)

3, The PoA wasn't headed to Earth or any colony anyway, and Cortana was to be escorted to Halo via Master Chief.

cole protocol doesnt clearify that you must evacuate before self destruct.

Exactly. They would blow up Reach if Earth was at risk. It's just the way it is.

No. Spartans are attached to Reach, and Reach is almost a 2nd Earth. It is possible that Human forces will retreat to Reach if Earth were to be discovered before Reach.

Hence the incredible number of ODPs built to protect Reach.

Of course. It's just Earth is the number one target. Reach gone, Earth, and vise versa, although they would risk it all to save Earth. Besides, there were still 5 other colonies that made it through the war, one of them containing over 500 million people.

To be honest I've thought about this too, to me it seems that because Cortana was entrusted to the MC they decided they didnt need to destroy the ship. Which is a fair decision I suppose?

I think it's just the number of SMACs that's 20, I'm pretty sure there a lot more ODPs than just the 20 SMACs.

OT:
Isn't the ship supposed to self-destruct only if they can't purge their nav data or something like that? That was the whole reason Fermion destroyed itself, because they didn't have time to purge all their information on Earth and the rest of the UNSC.

  • 05.22.2011 11:00 AM PDT

common sense I would guess, Cortana (the security problem) was in the hands of a SPARTAN-II who outright would not let it fall into enemy hands, regardless of what was required to prevent it! would bet the captain purged everything else from the systems, therefore removing the reason for self destruct.

  • 05.23.2011 5:52 AM PDT

This sig will Self-Destruct in 3.... 2.... 1.... Thank you for your time. Cookie?

Here's the Cole Protocol as stated from the Halo Wikia:

" 1. Activate selective purge of databases on all ship-based and planetary data networks.
2. Initiate triple-screen check to ensure all data has been erased and all backups neutralized.
3. Execute viral data scavengers (Download from UNSCTTP://EPWW:COLEPROTOCOL/Virtualscav/fbr.091)
4. If retreating from Covenant forces, all ships must enter Slipstream space with randomized vectors NOT directed toward Earth, the Inner Colonies, or any other human population center.
5. In case of imminent capture by Covenant forces and boarders, all UNSC ships MUST self-destruct.
Violation of this directive will be considered an act of TREASON and pursuant to UNSC Military law articles JAG 845-P and JAG 7556-L, such violations are punishable by life imprisonment or execution. "

In this case, it can be assumed that Cortana had all of the most vital data regarding Earth's slipspace vectors and other humanity-related data, and when Master Chief had landed, Keyes had focused more on keeping his team alive rather than initiating the Cole Protocol since all vital data had been removed from the ship.

HOWEVER, there is a small discrepancy regarding the end of first Halo, as we clearly see Spark going through the memory banks of the Autumn and commenting on "Lost knowledge." We can assume safely that he's either fixing the ship to disconnect the self-destruct sequence and had picked up this knowledge from fallen datapads or other small little things from the remains of marines and that this information was not vitally important or tactically significant to the humans and Covenant, but it is also entirely possible that the Autumn also had a separate storage bank or a backup of Cortana's data that the Covies were unable to access but Spark, being a sophisticated AI made by the guys WHO MADE THE FRICKEN HALO RINGS, was able to access it. Still, if they were aware of this, then the Cole Protocol should have been activated and the Autumn should have gone up in flames.

THEN AGAIN, this was made before the Cole Protocol was ever officially stated (iirc), so maybe Bungie didn't plan this in advance and this was a plot hole.

THEN AGAIN, they have the Halo Story Bible with then, so maybe this is leading up to some big thing we're not aware of, or some small detail we're not aware of.

THEN AGAIN, maybe we're just overthinking this.
