Subject: What made the Halo: Combat Evolved pistol so legendary?

RIP Halo 2: November 9, 2004-May 10, 2010
I was the 2nd to last person to get kicked off Halo 2, see the thread Here

Three shot kill, and amazing accuracy.

See you on the bounce, trooper.

Most guns in CE were awesome compared to their later iterations; the fact that the CE pistol was nerfed so viciously after CE deifies it when compared with the Halo 2 & 3 pistols.

You could take out a banshee with one clip.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

1 shot kill on legendary hunter.

Win.

Best. Gun. Ever.

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

halo 2 br with bxr and bxb, and double and quad shots is 10x more legendary.

after that the pistol but way below the halo 2 br for me.

You prefer a weapon that ground the skill curve into dust? Not exactly my idea of a good weapon, all it really did was give birth to the spawn trap/fire lane camping that Halo has been known for for the last few titles.

I realize that quite a few people like the simplicity offered by "one weapon to rule them all", but I always found it extremely boring, and not all that challenging.

The CE pistol was laughably powerful for a pistol, but at least it was balanced with it's accompanying sandbox. Sure you could cross-map with it, but you needed to be a good shot to pull it off. It's slow ROF also limited it from being dominant at close ranges.

How did the br lessen the skill gap in halo 2? The br and its button combinations are what made halo 2 the most competitive generation 6 and 7 console shooter. Anyone against bxr, doubleshotting, etc was just too bad to pull them off

I didn't say it "lessens the skill gap", I said it flattened the skill curve, there is a difference. In CE you had to be a multifaceted player to dominate, that meant that the player with the best map knowledge, varied weapon use, movement ability, and reaction times were very dangerous. Halo 2 introduces the BR and the 98% of the game revolves around a single weapon, and associated tactics that rely on that weapon. That doesn't mean that there is no longer a gap in skill between players, but that gap is defined by a single skill set.

The BR didn't make Halo 2 any more competitive than CE was, all it did was make is so damn simple that it attracted more people to the game. That doesn't mean Halo 2 was terrible, but it was simpler.

So you're trying to tell me that everyone using one weapon in halo 1 is somehow different than everyone using one weapon in halo 2?

No personal offense to you, but if you and whoever you played with only ever used the pistol in CE then you were either not very good at the game, or did nothing else but strafe-fire all day. The CE pistol did not dominate the weapon sandbox as the BR did in Halo 2/3. In CE pretty much every weapon had utility, which is not something that can be said about Halo 2 or 3.

Also, a few of us were talking during matchmaking and Halo: Reach is definitely going to be, not a first person shooter, not a third person shooter, but a second person shooter. Bungie is going to revolutionize the way you watch other people play games.

Nostalgia. Plain and simple. If the CE pistol was in Reach or Halo 3, people would have complained nonstop about how unfair it was. And they would have been right. Not saying it didn't have its place in CE, but it left the series when it should have.

I'm not sure I understand. You acknowledge that it has its place in Halo 1 but then say that the love for it is just nostalgia? How is it just nostalgia if it actually does work well in its place?

I don't think anyone would argue that the HCE pistol would port very well to the current weapon sets without change to something somewhere.
What people might argue is that the weapon's overall role in combat is nice, that its aesthetic is awesome, or that Halo 1's weapon set as a whole is awesome.

Halo 2 for Life!

ok now that it's hidden on page two.

I think the recoil was very well done and the power was great for non-online gaming.

H2 Br had 3 shot (better for lag) and button combos (better for combate and trick shots = gameplay elements for br) which made it better but pistol was still fun to shoot aliens and avatars with (timing was fun and allowed one to think but it felt powerful everytime one shot it, like bang bang, and one could feel the sound from my prespective).
