Subject: New Reach plothole?

Jake

So, I'm currently reading Ghosts of Onyx, and it says that the SPARTAN-IIIs were picked/kidnapped when they were four, five, and six years old. So why in the "Birth of a Spartan" trailer for Reach is Carter in his mid-teens by the looks of it? I know SPARTAN-IIIs were augmented to look older, but...

Also: what really irks be is that Noble team were S-IIIs. It clearly states in Ghosts of Onyx that the S-IIIs were started after the fall of Reach. Ghosts of Onyx takes place during Halo 3.

I really think Eric Nylund (author of most of the Halo books;works at Bungie) should've told the Bungie staff about the many, many plotholes in Reach.

What do you guys think? Do you agree?

Carter conscripted at age 11 the augments probably made him look like a 17 year old

You got your facts way off.

The Fall of Reach happened a few months before the end of the war (2552); the SIII's started in the 2530s.

And Carter looks that old because the augments were given to the kids when they reached 12 years old; however, Carter's age IS borderline unacceptable. He was 11 when his training started, let alone when he got the augments.

  • 05.24.2011 1:59 PM PDT

When they were 12 they looked like they were in their early 20's. The more widely concerning pothole considering s-III's age is that they were all older than six when they were inducted to the s-III program but you could say that is their chronological age due to the use of cryo pods.

Well, I know it doesn't only take place during H3, but I know it is after Reach. Plus, if you read the back of Ghosts of Onyx, it says "While Master Chief defends a besieged Earth..." Also, you can tell it takes place after TFoR because: Kelly is still with Dr. Halsey, Keyes is dead, etc.

Halsey had nothing to do with the S-III's

I didn't say that she did. But she arrived at Onyx two days after the Sentinels were released with Kelly, who she stole from Blue team as well as Governor Jile's ship and went into slipspace.

Oops, misunderstanding / I don't think it took place during halo 3. Halo 2 maybe...

Maybe. I really couldn't tell, unless someone could find out the month(s) that Halo 2 & 3 took place in. Because years won't make any difference (Reach, CE, 2, ODST, & 3 all took place in 2552)

How is it possible that you managed to skip every section that dealt with the past in that book.... Alpha and Beta companies were created long before Reach ever fell. The company in existence during/after the fall of Reach is Gamma....

Well, shame on me, I don't look at the dates. I'm not being sarcastic. I just skip the dates at the beginning of every chapter and keep reading :/

EDIT: Also, how is it that the only survivors of Beta company were Tom and Lucy, but Emile, Jun, and Carter (Noble 6, too? He/shes serial number is B-312) survived the invasion of Pegasi Delta?

They didn't participate in the battle. They were pulled out by Kurt before the operation started.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

I wouldn't put it past Ackerson to keep someone Carter's age in the program even though he is pushing the age safe for the augmentations.

Noble Team were pulled out of their respective company early on. Earlier than Pegasi Delta in the case of Beta Company.

EDIT: As for why, to become part of a special team like Noble Team, I suppose.

On the cover of Ghosts of Onyx, what rifles are the EVA-wearing Spartan and the Mark V-wearing Spartan carrying? They look like BR's, but the barells look too short.

I think it was the MA5K, which was the shortened, carbine version of the regular MA5C/B.

And, Emile, Carter, Jun and every member of Noble Team (save for Jorge of course) were taken out of their companies because they matched Spartan II genetic properties, so they were deemed to valuable to be sent to suicide missions.

I thought Kurt was training the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma companies for twenty years.

Out of curiosity where is that said?

My understanding was that they were pulled out of their companies (along with all the other SIIIs that would be slated for other duties such as the headhunters) for having outstanding combat records. Now if I'm mistaken it's fine by me, though I would like to know the source for the correct reasoning behind this.

We don't know what age biologically Carter was when they took him into the SIII program, you have to take cryo sleep into consideration for all ages, what may be a characters actual age isn't always their physical one. Take Johnson for instance, the guy is like 80 something years old at least by the time of his death, yet physically he's still only in his 40s at the very least, probably more like 50s or 60s.

I don't know the exact date, but the Spartan III program was started long before the Battle of Reach, a good 20 years or so I believe.

I don't think Eric Nylund works at Bungie (not to my knowledge at least), but he did do at least work to some capacity on Halo: Reach's story.
