Subject: Patching Reach to Better Fit Established Canon

Over the course of several hours, I have drafted a document describing how to patch Reach to better fit with the previously established canon. Obviously, I don't excpect 343 Industries to take much notice. I have done this for hypothetical reasons only.

PDF - XPS

I am continually updating this.

To my understanding, impossible, once the game is out there's not fixing stuff like the campaign, not like what you're proposing anyway. 343i if they want to change anything will have to go about announcing and instituting any changes they make (if any) a different way entirely.

And I personally don't think there is a need for any changes to the story what so ever.

Do you say this because there is yet another The Fall of Reach reprint next month?

  • 05.25.2011 1:47 PM PDT

Do I say what? That the story doesn't need to be changed because there's going to another TFoR edition coming out?

I actually don't know if there will be one, I haven't heard anything from an official source, only rumors on Bungie.net, but I said I don't think there will be any changes to the game itself like what you describe because I don't think they can edit the game in that way.

Both Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble have confirmed a 2011 print of The Fall of Reach with "Definitive Edition" on the cover. This particular print is marked as a separate publication from the 2010 edition.

I don't think Halsey was at castle base when you went to help her, I think it was her private lab or something. In fact I think most of the interactions between Noble and Halsey were canonical.

Those changes are necessary because I've moved them to August 30.

Is there? I may buy the updated books if they get it right this time. I wanted to with the first reprint but i specifically didnt because of the errors and the whole using the first edition template by mistake thing which was just comedic.

You know, I really think it was due to a lack of communication between Bungie Studios and 343 Industries.

August 2010: The Fall of Reach is released and remains largely unchanged.

September 2010: Reach is released using different canon for a template, nullifying the book.

December 2010: First Strike (Definitive Edition) is released with changes to make it fit with Reach where the original print conflicted.

June 2011: The Fall of Reach (Definitive Edition) is set to be released.

Theory: Books marked as Definitive Edition have been updated to fit with the new game. I believe this because of the amount of time it's taking to put out this new Fall of Reach print. It is the book that would need the most updating.

In the new "First Stike Definitive", nothing was changed from the original with the exception of Brutes not being described as never before seen. More mistakes are actually made in it.

However, First Strike really doesn't have any problems with the canon, its TFoR that does. The book has already been released a few times, I'm starting to doubt that the canon will ever be corrected.

Also, where did you hear that the book is being re-released again next month?

"What do you hear?"
"Nothing but the rain."
"Then grab your gun and bring in the cat."
"Boom, boom, boom!"

Conversation between the S-IIs and Halsey is also changed in the reprint.

Chapter 13, paragraph 16 of First Strike (2003) has Cathrine Halsey saying:

"I know the Covenant entered the Epsilon Eridani system at approximately oh-five-hundred hours."

This passage takes place on August 30th.

EDIT: Does the Definitive Edition contain this passage? It was released on December 12th of last year, which is three months after the game.

Heh! They're slick. Here's what the 2010 edition says:

"With regard to recent events, I likely know far more about this than you do, but let's stick with today. I know that the Covenant arrived in full force at approximately oh-five-hundred hours."

I bet anything they're repairing The Fall of Reach for release next month. I wonder how they're going to make it fit.

I like Call of Duty and Gears of War, AND Halo. Why must everyone else like only one or the other?

Interesting. Those are certainly minor changes that would go a long way towards making the canon better fit. But with your changes there is still a larger canon break that you leave in, and that is Dr. Halsey actually interacting with Noble Team. When you read through the books when she finds the Ackerson files of S-III she wonders if that's a new Spartan program. If she already interacted with Noble Team, then she wouldn't wonder about that being a new program as she'd have already seen with her own eyes that there are spartans besides her own. Anyway, like you say there's really no chance this will ever happen. As we see next month we'll get the Definitive Edition of Fall of Reach which will likely drastically change the book (at least the ending about the actual battle of Reach) to make it fit with the changed story in Reach.

Wasn't that version already released? Or are they using the same book cover art with "Definitive addition" printed on it? ( I personally would like to see a realistic cover art for the re-released books rather than artistic license. )

Ok guys, can anyone come up with a list of the GOOD versions of the re-releases of these first three books? Its getting kind of hard to keep track of them. I mean what are these Definitive Editions, ive never heard of them before this thread.

  • 05.25.2011 7:02 PM PDT

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

They'd have to scratch the whole entire Reach campaign and make a completely new campaign to fit more with the canon.

No they wouldn't, the two can coexist, if the fans can think up plenty of plausible solutions to the issues without completely re-writing either the book or the game, then 343i or Bungie sure as hell can.

You're out of your mind if you believe that. Books are canon, Games just overrule them if crossed.

Sorry.

Books == Canon

Unless

Reach == Canon

Therefore:

Fall of Reach == True in Spirit (everything but the dates are the same anyway)

Using the same cover with "Definitive Edition" printed on it. Hopefully it has some changes. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled around these parts when it's released.

I was just in Barnes & Nobles today... They had "Definitive Editions" of First Strike and Fall of Reach on the shelf...

WHAT?! Then that's it. This "new" book that I thought was coming out is just a mass market paperback (smaller size) adaptation. Well shoot, I'm going to Barnes and Noble tomorrow and picking one up!

Thanks!

Fairly sure I saw Fall of Reach, didn't see one for the flood, but I personally plopped out the First Strike one and looked over the cover.

Sorry to say this again but here's my personal opinions again about this topics-

I would say that Reach game's campaign can't be simply fixed, since it has major conflicts with canon of Halo universe (The Fall of Reach, Ghosts of Onyx and First Strike) and I am very, very doubtful that this story can easily be fixed, despite rants of OrderedComa, DeceptionCobra, Cmdr. DeaFaron, and very few members.

You may respectfully disagree with my opinion.

To fix the canon standing in the Halo: Reach, it would require drastic measures such as overhauling the campaign, to fit better in the sense of The Fall of Reach. We can keep the SPARTAN-IIIs as long they're using SPIs and constant switching to Blue Team or Red Team, as somewhere in the books said that battle of reach called for all available forces to assist.

These are the worst changes proposed on this forum so far.
Why remove a significant amount of Jorge's character development in paticular and plot, making the game rather random just to adhere to outdated canon?
