I still do not know why Bungie chose to tell the tale of some of the worst characters in video game history.
The campaign was not action packed, didn't have any sort of scale..it was a pretty poor job. ODST conveyed the feeling of desperation better by utilising the shattered husk of New Mombasa etc.
To change the story line for the books and game to fit would be like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. I doubt 343 would do any Reach related material (game) as it would be a massive slap in the face to Bungie, especially if they alter the canon etc
Bit of a mess really.
Aside from ODST the characters in all of Bungie's Halo games have had the same level of depth, the only reason people say the characters in Halo's trilogy are better developed is because we've had three games with them present and a whole bunch of other media such as the books developing their characters.
Difference of opinion, I thought the campaign for Reach was more dark and depressing than ODST's ever was, in ODST I just felt sheer boredom during the Rookie's levels, and even the missions for the other members of the Squad didn't feel desperate at all. The only part of ODST that felt desperate or anything like that at all was the part of the last mission where you're driving down the highway of New Mombasa, and even then it didn't make me feel much.
Actually that is not a good analogy at all, it's like watching someone assembly a puzzle or a Lego creation, only we can't see the picture of what the finished puzzle is supposed to look like or the instructions for the Lego. We can guess how things will fit from what we can see now, but we have no real idea how because we can't really see what the finished project is supposed to look like.
