...and ARs?

There's a different UNSC weapon with it's own model number for pretty much every Halo game.

Yet when we get to the Covenant weapons that have seen drastic changes they are still all lumped under the same model number? The Needler has changed three times with drastic physical and mechanical changes before getting to it's current incarnation. Brute Shot too.

Why is that?

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Battle Rifle has been on two games and has had two different models, with the exception of the Cole Protocol variant. Sniper Rifle has been updated thrice I believe, same with Shotgun. Rocket Launcher too I believe.

Magnums and Assault Rifles are the main weapons of the UNSC armed forces though, that's why you see so much variants. Covenant weaponry on the other side, is pretty much the same in all the games, with no noticeable changes shown (apart from the obvious change for gameplay)

Think of Starship Troopers, it's a standard issue weapon, that's all there is to it. No point having different variants of guns that play the same role.

Brains beats brawn get used to it

Fear the Red Comet

Variety is the spice of life.
Long live games.
Death to all fanboys.

Going off canon, Covie weaponry is not to be tampered with or changed in anyway due to beliefs. Sticking to imitation and what not... It remains as is. That's why there aren't different variations of the same gun.

In terms of damage and all that stuff just chalk it up to gameplay necessity.

At least not by any of the other races save for the Prophets.

I have.

Just nags at me that the Covenant can't be spared to even differenciate between say the CE Needler and the H2 Needler.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Technically the Needler from Halo CE is the same as the Needler from Halo Wars, Reach, 2, ODST and 3. It just haves different looks and mechanics for gameplay's sake.

I believe all of the weapons function bit differently. Like their bullets shoot off with different velocities, they use different rounds, etc.

I don't know what's the thing with Covenant weapons. We could maybe blame gameplay for that.

The way I see it, graphical upgrades are just that. The newest/highest poly design takes preference.

Damage is gameplay.

Different designations, well how do you expect a single company to produce weaponry for a galactic military? It's a logistical nightmare.
It is easier to let it be built under contract under a different designation.

Just look at Humanity now. How many guns do we have that serve the exact same purpose?

  • 05.28.2011 3:06 AM PDT

Well, probably for gameplay. Canon-wise, they could have tried to find the best weapon against the Covenant's various enemies and armor, not to mention shields.

Well its mostly for gameplay. It might get boring using the same handfull of guns every game.

Canon wise. Just look at todays military. How many different versions of M-16's are out there?

Different branches might have different requirements for how they want their AR so they get a variant made for them. Or the UNSC might be phasing out certain varients but some units might not have gotten their new versions when we see them. Then there are the varients exclusive to special forces units.

As for the covenant its considered heresy to modify weapons.
