From Halo: Reach, Reach fell on August 30, 2552.

However, the first Halo game occurred during May of 2552, as shown in the Private Jenkins cutscene. The time slot of the recording is 2552.5.27. May 27, 2552.

According to the canon, Reach fell after the Installation 04 was found, 3 months after.

...I'm really surprised about how bad of a slip up this is. It indeed seems as if an actual remake of Halo 1 is in order, considering the amount that was not said in it, including the fact that Reach fell after Installation 04 was found.

Unless of course, Reach was attacked, PoA jumped, Reach survived, and then was attacked again two months later. Which doesn't make sense given how surprised everyone is the Covenenant was on Reach during Halo: Reach.

Considering the novel/game relationship sucks in regards to consistency, I've kind of given up hope about the two canons working out. This however is an in-game inconsistency, and is pretty disappointing.

But I'll say again.

Maybe the months are different on UNSC Military Calendar? Slipspace Jump confused the internal computer in Jenkins helmet?

Canonically, Halo: Combat Evolved starts on September 19, 2552. The camera logs in Jenkin's helmet is a slip-up. Halo: The Flood and Halo: Reach both support this claim.

EDIT: See here.

I see the article states that he never calibrated his camera helmet, but I'm not sure where the source information for this is. Also, where is it stated that Halo: Combat Evolved starts on September 19? Manual? Because I do not recall it ever being stated in-game.

If all of this is confirmed within the book, it's annoying, considering most of the things that occur in the novels don't line up with events in-game. Makes the novels unreliable sources of canon information, honestly.

The ending of Halo: Reach, it gives the date when the Pillar of Autumn exits slip space.

'The Flood' fits just fine with Halo CE, maybe you should replay and re-read to refresh yourself.

Also, the date they found Alpha Halo is also stated in 'The Flood' novel.

But from lurking this forum from time to time I was under the impression that game canon overruled book canon, and so therefore the date must be correct, and thusly Halo features time travel.

But that means the date must be correct then which directly conflicts with the story D:

This really is a lot of fun isn't it.

It's very rare not to see this nowadays.

Regardless of when Combat Evolved was intended to take place, we now have:

1. A book from 2010 backing up September.
2. A game from 2010 backing up September.

I think that should settle it. Now if they re-released Combat Evolved with that same date, then we would have something (more) to contend with.

EDIT: Given recent events, they probably would.

I do remember a source (can't remember what it was) saying that slipspace had "currents" which affected ships traveling in slipspace. Apparently these currents slowed down or sped up a ship's speed in slipspace making it hard to coordinate effective attacks on planets/fleets.

Just interesting food for thought.

Really? How about the fact that TfoR fails to mention that Reach held for a month? Or the fact that the manual for Halo: Combat Evolved states John is the last Spartan, yet the novels disagree with that fact? And what of John finding another marine during the library, which does not exist anywhere within the level? The fact that Halsey is not surprised upon seeing other Spartans, yet she doesn't know about the S-III's?

The novels have never been the greatest source of consistent information. They're a great a story, and they made me fall in love with the universe, but they are no where near consistent enough to the way the games have been portrayed.

Also, I should have looked into the last cutscene for Halo: Reach. Didn't realize that one, actually. I had recently replayed Halo 1 and noticed this flaw. Still wondering where it's stated that Jenkins didn't take care of his helmet, hence the off time. It's probably simply an overlooked fact by Bungie.

Canon inconsistencies were minor until the latest game came out.

And also Halsey knew there were other Spartans.
