Subject: [Fanfiction] Halo: Two Betrayals [Chapter 3 released]

This is my first ever fanfiction(My first ever story, actually), so please do not flame.

Summary: Halo: Two Betrayals is set 7 years after the Battle of the Ark. The Covenant return with even more power than before, still attempting to bring about the Great Journey. And this time, there may be nobody to stop them.

Now onto the story.

Halo: Two Betrayals

Prologue
7 years after the Battle of the Ark

"So you have found it?" The Prophet asked the Jiralhanae Chieftain. "We have, noble Prophet." The Chieftain replied.

"You have done well, Chieftain Ereberus. Assemble your fleets and rendezvous with my Supercarrier. The Covenant will rise again! Soon we will light the rings, and the Great Journey shall begin!"

"Yes, Noble One."

The Prophet closed the transmission. The Covenant will rise again. And this time, there will be no one to stop them. Ereberus thought as he made his way to the command center of the Assault Carrier Great Journey.

Sangheili CCS-class Battlecruiser Victorious Inquisitor

"Open fire." Ship Master Nyral 'Ketham said as his CCS-Class Battlecruiser fired another volley from its Pulse Laser Turrets at the Brute Corvette. "No effect, Ship Master." 'Ketham's Second in Command, Usef 'Hulsan, reported. The Inquisitor shook as the Corvette returned fire. "Fire Energy Projectors." 'Ketham ordered. The Inquisitor's forward Energy Projector fired at the Corvette, obliterating it.

This was the most recent of several attacks on Sangheili colonies by the Brutes. They were easily dealt with, but the Sangheili had to divert a lot of resources to defending their colonies, including the resources used to help their human allies rebuild their worlds.

The battle was over, at least for now. The Inquisitor was part of a 40-ship fleet tasked with the defense of the Sangheilian outer colonies.

"Ship Master! I'm detecting multiple slipspace ruptures! More Jiralhanae ships are arriving!" Usef shouted.

"How many?" Asked Nyral.

"500."

"Forerunners help us..."

The tide is turning, brothers! Let us take our kingdom back!

Cool! I hope your chapters are much lengthier, but I can't wait to see how this turns out.

  • 05.31.2011 12:28 AM PDT

Thank you for the reply, OfTheBloodguard. I'll make the chapters longer, that was just a prologue. The next few chapters will get a lot more interesting. Or so I hope. The chapters might take a little while though. Partially because I have to write them, and partially because I can't post them without finding every "special character"(Quotes, etc)and removing it. If anyone knows any method of quickly getting the chapter from MS Word to the forums, please tell me.

Sorry for the double post, but here is Chapter 1. Hopefully its long enough. Enjoy!

Chapter 1: The Battle

The Inquisitor shook again as the Brute Corvette group pounded them with volley after volley of Plasma. Fires erupted in the back of the bridge, killing many Sangheili in the area. "Get that fire out!" Usef had to shout over the noise of the battle. "Target Plasma Torpedoes at the lead ship!" Cried Nyral, struggling to keep his balance as the ship rocked again and again.

"Firing torpedoes!" Usef shouted.

"Fire Energy Projectors at the other vessels! Target the ones that are recharging their weapons!"

"Firing now!"

The Plasma Torpedoes impacted the first vessels, which had already had its shields weakened by Pulse Laser fire. The ship exploded, damaging another nearby corvette. Next, both of the Inquisitor's Energy Projectors fired, obliterating two corvettes that were recharging their weapons. The last corvette was damaged, and began to retreat, only to be destroyed by the Inquisitor's Pulse Lasers.

"What is the status of the fleet?" Nyral asked.

"We have lost three ships. The Corvette Reluctance, the CCS Battlecruisers Will of the Gods and Revelation." Replied Usef, hands flying across his console.

"And ours?"

"Not good, Ship Master. Half of our Pulse Lasers have been destroyed or rendered inoperable. We have lost Plasma Turrets and one of our Energy Projectors is damaged. Using it again would be unwise."

"We must retreat. It is the only option. Contact the Fleet of Glorious Victory and inform them of our situation."

"But Ship Master! We cannot retreat! It would be a dishonor to Sangheili everywhere!" Shouted a Minor who was manning the communications station.

"It is only temporary, and we will not have to go far. We can hide behind the colonies moon. The Brute ships will not be able to detect us there."

"But-"

The Minor was cut off as Nyral glared at him angrily. He turned back to his station, and carried out the Ship Master's orders, relaying the retreat order to the remaining ships. Most of them began to retreat, but some stayed where they were. Damn it! Nyral thought. "Open a communications frequency with those ships! Now!" Nyral shouted frantically. But he was too late. The 7 ships that had remained, most of them being corvettes or damaged CCS Battlecruisers, were destroyed by 2 Brute Assault Carriers. Nyral lowered his head in sadness. "They died honorably." A nearby Sangheili Major said.

"We are behind the moon, Ship Master. The Brutes cannot detect us." Usef reported.

"Begin repairs."

---------------------------------------

4 Hours later, Slipspace

Fleet Master Saro 'Kelan walked onto the bridge of the Assault Carrier Righteous Justice, the flagship of the Fleet of Glorious Victory, which consisted of over 300 ships. They had received an emergency transmission from one of the Sangheili border fleets a while ago, saying that a massive Brute fleet had arrived. Saro had ordered the fleet to immediately set a course for the Outer Colony that was under attack. The fleet was about to exit Slipspace. When they entered normal space, Saro was shocked. There were hundreds of Brute ships, far more than he could've imagined. "We are reading over 500 Brute ships, Fleet Master." A Major reported.

"Begin the attack. Can you locate the border fleet?"

"No, Fleet Master. It is possible that they were destroyed. There is some debris that most likely came from Sangheilian ships."

"No doubt they died honorably. The Brutes will pay for the blood they have spilt. Fire on the nearest Brute ship. Make them pay."

The Righteous Justice fired on the nearest Brute ship, a CCS-Class Battlecruiser. Plasma Torpedoes impacted the enemy ships engines, disabling them. The ship returned fire. The other Sangheili ships joined in the fight, and soon the battle intensified. The Justice destroyed another Brute ship, before it came under heavy attack from a Brute Assault Carrier. A Sangheili Battlecruiser began firing at the ship, but was destroyed by a second Assault Carrier, which began to fire on the Justice. The second Assault Carrier was engaged by a large group of Battlecruisers and Corvettes in an attempt to draw its fire away from the Justice. The attempt was successful, and the Assault Carrier focused on the other ships, giving the Justice a chance to land several hits on it with Plasma Torpedoes and Pulse Lasers. The group of ships which had distracted it fired as well, landing a critical hit on its main hangar bay, which exploded in a brilliant display of blue fire.

A second Sangheili Assault Carrier arrived to finish of the crippled Brute ship. However, while the Justice had been distracted by the other Assault Carrier, the first one had managed to move in closer. It fired Energy Projectors, severely damaging the Sangheili ship. This was followed by two Plasma Torpedoes. The Justice swiftly turned towards the other ship, and began to fire on it with Pulse Lasers.

"Energy Projector two is inoperable. Plasma Turrets have been destroyed. All we have are Pulse Lasers and one Energy Projector!" The Major shouted.

"Fire the Pulse Lasers at the forward section of the Brute ship. Weaken their shields. Then fire the Energy Projector at the same location. With any luck we will be able to penetrate their shielding and land a solid hit on their hull." Saro, as confident as ever, said.

The Justice fired its Pulse Lasers at the Brute Assault Carrier's forward section, weakening its shields. The Pulse Lasers were followed by an Energy Projector, which penetrated the Assault Carriers shields and damaged its forward section, totally disabling its shields in that area. Two Battlecruisers fired Plasma Torpedoes at the Assault Carrier, followed by Pulse Lasers from the Justice. The Assault Carrier exploded in a violet cloud of plasma.

The Sangheili on the bridge cheered. "Bring the ship away from the frontlines. We are in no condition to fight." Saro said, and the ship began to move away from the frontlines. "We may have one that small battle, but this is only the beginning."

The tide is turning, brothers! Let us take our kingdom back!

Good stuff so far. Will this story be more battle-driven or character-driven?

  • 06.01.2011 1:07 AM PDT

Games I like:,
Half-Minute Hero
MBU
Portal
Halo 3 is the best Halo ever
Maps I like: Turf, Avalanche, Pylon, Sandbox, Breakpoint and many more.

Nice, I enjoyed the prolouge.

But your first chapter was kind of boring. To me, it seemed to only be battle scene after battle scene that went way to fast.

I enjoyed the storyline so far, but it would be good if you delved a bit deeper into each battle (i.e talk about how the ships shields went down, what the staff would be doing on the bridge, Seraphs, Boarding parties ect.)

  • 06.01.2011 2:26 AM PDT

Beginning of the prologue was very cheesy. The cliche 'deliverance of the report to the bad guy who then makes a fervent statement.' I've probably done it myself a few times but despite this hypocrisy it's still cheesy.

Rest of the prologue was good. I got a little bored with the first chapter, though. It's generally a bad move to begin a story with battle -- flesh your characters out instead, tell us a bit about them. Reading 'the battery then swung to the left and fired, before unloading a volley of rounds at the targets. Then some troops came by and the automatic defences made short work of them. Suddenly, a ship destroyed that part of the corridor,' for an entire chapter is a little dull.

Try and throw in some more character exposition, if you don't mind me saying.

Thank you for the criticism/replies.

@OftheBloodGuard: I'm not sure yet. I'm terrible at writing characters, but I want to try and improve.

@Multijirachi: I'm going to cut down on the battle scenes in the next few chapters. Chapter 2 will be more about the Elites finding out what the Brutes are up to, and I want to do some character development as well.

@WolverFrog: Yeah, its cheesy. I couldn't think of anything else, so I just went with that. Characters aren't my strong point as stated before, but I'll try. There will be less battles from now on.

@AssaultCommand: I only noticed that after I posted the story. Apparently, MS Words grammar-checker doesn't pick that up. It was a stupid mistake, I'll fix it right away.

Thanks everyone. Chapter 2 will take a little longer. I'm going to flesh out the characters more. This story will mainly focus on the Fleet Master, but the other two Elites will also play major roles.

Sorry for the long wait. I've had writers block, and on top of that, I've had a terrible cold all this weekend and I haven't felt like writing anything at all. But now I'm back, and the announcement of Halo 4 has brought me back into the Halo World. So, without further ado, here is the revealing(albeit short)Chapter 2. I tried to do a bit of character development with this, but as I said, I'm quite terrible at characters(This is also probably quite cliche).

Chapter 2: Memories

"Repairs have been completed, Ship Master." Said Usef, as a group of Huragok began to leave the bridge.

"Good. Bring us back into the battle." Nyral said.

The Victorious Inquisitor made its way back into the battle. The Brutes appeared to be losing now that a fleet had arrived. The Inquisitor began firing on a nearby Brute Battlecruiser, with support from two corvettes.

---------------------------------------

Saro had been forced to abandon the Justice after it had come under attack by another Brute ship. Its shields were already weakened, and it was easy prey for the enemy ship. He was now onboard the fleet's second Assault Carrier, the Dawn of Understanding.

"Fleet Master, we are detecting more ships coming out from behind the colonies moon! It's the Border Fleet!" A Minor reported from his station.

"So they did survive. Good. We can use the help. Target that Corvette group and-" Saro was cut off as the Brute ships opened slipspace portals and left the area. "Follow them in!" Saro received a communication from the CCS-Class Battlecruiser Victorious Inquisitor. The face of a Ship Master came on the screen.

"Thank you for coming to our assistance. Had you not, we would surely have been destroyed." The Ship Master said.

"You are welcome, however right now we have more pressing matters. The cowardly Brutes have retreated, and we have been able to estimate their course. They are heading to an unknown location. We need you to stay behind and protect the colony. The Fleet of Retribution will arrive shortly to reinforce you." Replied Saro. "Somehow they managed to amass a fleet that large without us being able to detect it. It does not make any sense."

"Of course, Fleet Master."

Saro closed the link. "Follow them." He said.

The fleet opened slipspace portals, and began to follow the Brutes. "We will arrive in approximately 19 hours, Fleet Master." A Minor from the back of the bridge reported. "Inform me when we arrive." Saro said, and left the bridge.

He walked down the corridors of the Understanding for a while, passing many medical and repair teams as he went. He walked by the body of a young minor being carried away by two medics. He walked onto the observation deck, staring out at the blackness of slipspace. The Brutes will pay for what they have done. I will make sure of that. He remembered back to the Great Schism, when he had lost everything. He had been a Major serving on board a Sangheili ship that was boarded by the Brutes. The Ship Master had been killed, along with the rest of the bridge crew. He'd taken command, and had managed to repel the Brute boarders by decompressing the areas they were in. But in doing so, he also killed many Sangheili, and to this day he still felt the guilt. For his actions in stopping the Brutes he had been promoted to Zealot. That's when things got bad. He was serving on the Ark, when he and his group had been ambushed. They were all killed, including his young brother, Levek 'Kelan. All because of a mistake he had made that day. He was about to drive his Sword into a Brute Minor, but had hesitated for only a moment when he had seen the look of fear in the Brutes eyes. That was all it had taken for the Chieftain commanding the group of Brutes to strike.

Levek had been finishing off a Captain as Saro finally got over his feeling of compassion for the Brute Minor. The Chieftain had jumped out of the shadows and struck Levek in the side with his Gravity Hammer, killing him instantly. Saro had cried out in rage at that moment, and had viciously slaughtered the Minor and the Chieftain. If only I had paid attention. Perhaps I would have been able to save Levek. Things only got worse when he returned home to find his family dead at the hands of the Brutes.

It was then that he swore never to show mercy to his enemies again, and made it his mission to kill every single Brute he could. He would not rest until those responsible for his family's death were dead by his hand. Revenge is all I have left.

He knew that this was the perfect chance to get revenge on the Brutes. And that is what he intended to do. At any price.

19 hours later

"Fleet Master Saro 'Kelan, report to the bridge immediately." A tired sounding voice said over the intercom, waking Saro from his sleep. Saro returned to the bridge a few moments later. Repair crews and medical teams were everywhere, repairing broken consoles or tending to the wounded.

"What is it?" Saro asked. His question was answered as he looked at the viewscreen. "By the Forerunners!" He exclaimed. Outside was a massive sphere, big enough to encompass an entire star system. It was clearly Forerunner in design. There was only one thing the Covenant could be doing here.

They were trying to activate Halo. And somehow, this Sphere held the key.

They had to be stopped, or everything in the galaxy would die.

Damn. Halo 4 has me really revved up, and your newest chapter was more exciting to me because of it.

Oh, and edit your title, seeing you've released the second chapter.

Sorry for the long wait. Here is Chapter 3, its a little longer than the other ones.

Chapter 3: Relic
Covenant Supercarrier Mourning of the Forefathers

A Brute Captain rushed into the Prophet of Compassion's throne room. "What is it?" Compassion asked as the Brute kneeled before him.

"Noble Prophet... It is my duty to inform you that the Chieftain Ereberus was killed when his Assault Carrier was destroyed a few hours ago."

The reckless ape. Compassion thought. "This is unfortunate. No matter, I shall simply find another Chieftain."

Compassion signaled for the Brute to leave. Once he was alone, he pressed a button on his Gravity Throne and opened a communications channel. A hologram of a massive Brute War Chieftain appeared on the chair's armrest. "What is it, Noble Prophet?" The Brute asked, bowing his head in respect.

"The old Chieftain of the Jiralhanae has been killed. As his son, you are the inheritor of his position. Your first task, Chieftain Brutus, is to find the Sacred Icon contained somewhere inside the Sphere. Only once you have found it can the Great Journey begin."

"I am your instrument, Holy One. I will find the Sacred Icon and begin the Journey."

Compassion closed the link, and sighed. He pressed another button on his chair, contacting the bridge. "Prepare to open the Portal so the fleet may enter." He said.

"Yes, My Lord." Someone replied from the other end.

On the bridge, Brutes manned their stations. One of them, at a station at the front of the bridge, pressed a few keys. A blue beam shot forth from the Mourning of the Forefathers, hitting the Sphere in an indented area, which subsequently began to glow. A beam of light shot up from the center of the area, and a slipspace portal began to form above it, not unlike the one that led to the Ark. The Covenant fleet passed through it, and disappeared.

---------------------------------------

"Sir, the Covenant fleet is opening some kind of portal... They are passing through... They are gone, sir." A Major reported from his station.

"Then we don't have time to wait for the other fleets. We must go into the portal and delay them for as long as we can. Take us in." Saro commanded. The Understanding began to move towards the portal, increasing speed until it was going as fast as its sub-light engines could take it.

"The portal is beginning to collapse!" Someone from the rear of the bridge shouted. "We aren't going to make it! We should alter course!"

"No! Do not alter course! Keep heading for the portal! We will make it!" Saro shouted back.

The Understanding passed through the portal as it closed, the rest of the fleet following it. Some of them didn't make it through in time, and were either left behind or destroyed.

Saro couldn't believe what he saw inside the Sphere. There was an entire solar system encased within it. There was a star, planets, moons, asteroids, comets. But what was truly remarkable was that the entire surface of the Sphere was habitable. Forests, deserts, tundra's, mountains, everything.

For a few moments, he admired the Sphere, unable to focus on anything else. Many other members of the bridge crew did the same.

"Fleet Master, the Brutes are sending dropships to the surface of the Sphere... One of their ships is firing on us!" A Major said, snapping Saro out of his trance.

"Return fire and begin deploying ground troops to the surface of the Sphere." Saro said as the battle begun.

Phantoms descended from the many Sangheili ships, heading for the surface of the giant Sphere.

---------------------------------------

15 Minutes later, Surface of the Sphere

"Onward Brothers! Let us destroy the Brutes and save our worlds!" The Field Marshall shouted as the Phantoms landed, and hordes of Sangheili poured from them. They had landed in a grassy field which stretched on for kilometers in every direction.

Once the Phantoms had dropped off their troops and vehicles, they returned to the fleet above. Ghosts moved up the field, towards the small outpost the Brutes had set up.

Fael 'Vulram charged forward, Plasma Rifle in his hand. He rolled out of the way of a boosting Chopper, only to be shot at by a Brute Minor wielding a Spiker Rifle. His shields flared as the superheated spikes crashed into them. He squeezed the trigger of his Plasma Rifle, and 6 bolts of blue energy sailed through the air and into the face of the Brute, shattering its power armor and melting off the face of the Brute. Fael cringed as his red armor was coated with the blood of his latest kill.

While he had been distracted, another Brute had taken the opportunity to sneak up behind him and hit him with the blades on its Spiker. Fael's shields disintegrated, and he let out a cry of pain and rage. Turning around, he fired on the Brute until his rifle overheated. He rolled behind a rock as his shields started to recharge.

As the battle raged around him, he looked over the rock to see that the Brutes had been beaten back significantly. Then, he saw something in the corner of his eye. He ducked back behind the rock just as the beam rifle shot flew through the air where his head would have been. He had spotted the glowing eyepiece of a Jackal Sniper, hiding in one of the trees. Jumping out from behind the rock, he let loose a burst from his Plasma Rifle. The bolts hit the tree, one of them catching the sniper in the leg, causing him to fall down. The tree fell down after him, having been hit in the trunk by a stray shot from a Fuel Rod Gun. The sniper, along with a few nearby Unggoy, was crushed.

Ghosts sailed past Fael, smashing into the unlucky Covenant soldiers caught in their path. All around him, Brutes were dropping like flies; the superior skill of the Sangheili was obviously winning the battle. That was until Fael heard an immense crash behind him. He turned, to see a Covenant Scarab walking towards him, having been dropped from orbit.

Its main weapon began to charge, and Fael dove for cover. The beam wasn't aimed at him, however. It was aimed at several Wraiths which were just beginning to target the gigantic walker. The tanks were destroyed in balls of flame. The explosions threw several nearby Sangheili back, killing some of them. Banshees tried to take down the Scarab, but failed as they were shot down by its massive Anti-Air cannon.

A crashed Banshee landed not far away. From the looks of it, it was still flyable. He picked up a second Plasma Rifle and stood up. Two Minors and a Major jumped behind cover with him. "Cover me while I head for that Banshee." He said to them, pointing to the damaged Banshee which was spewing Plasma out of its wings. The Major nodded, as did the Minors. The other three Sangheili jumped out of cover, firing on the nearest Covenant soldiers. Fael ran as fast as he could towards the Banshee. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a Brute throwing a Spike Grenade. Rolling to avoid the sharp object which would have otherwise stuck him, he fired his Plasma Rifles at the Brute, the plasma destroying its Power Armor and burning through its flesh.

Finally, he reached the Banshee. Getting inside, he started it up. He flew towards the Scarab, which was distracted by several other Banshees. Dodging the occasional stray blast from its Anti-Air Cannon, Fael was soon directly above the Scarab. "Here goes nothing..." He muttered, jumping out of the Banshee, which crashed into a group of Unggoy and a Brute, and landing on top of the Scarab. As he regained his balance, a Brute Minor rushed up to where he was. Quickly drawing out his Plasma Rifles, Fael poured fire into the Brute, who dropped to the ground several seconds later.

Fael made his way to the core, killing most of the crew as he did so. He reached the core, and Plasma began to pour forth from his rifles, collapsing the shield. He holstered his Plasma Rifles, which were running out of battery, and drew his Plasma Pistol. Holding down the trigger, he charged a shot. He let go, and shot hit the core, destroying it. Warning klaxons blared throughout the Scarab. Fael only had a few seconds before the Scarab exploded.

He ran to the edge of the vehicle, and jumped off. He landed on the ground, almost falling over from the impact, his shields disintegrating. He heard a loud hum being emitted from the Scarab. He was too close. Running as fast as he possibly could, he jumped behind some debris from a Wraith just as the Scarab exploded. Pieces of debris fell from the sky as a cloud of plasma the fallen Scarab had emitted cleared. The battle continued, and now that the Scarab had been destroyed, quickly turned in the Sangheili's favor.

---------------------------------------

20 minutes later

The pack of Brutes walked through the dense jungle. Leading them was the newly appointed Chieftain, Brutus. Their mission was simple: Find the Silent Cartographer, retrieve the Index, and activate Halo. The Brutes stopped when they came to a large Forerunner structure. There was a huge door. Brutus walked up to a control panel, and placed his hand on it. The door opened, and the Brutes entered.

After several minutes of walking, they came to a huge, open room. In the center of the room, there was a seemingly bottomless chasm, a pedestal in the center, with nothing connecting it to the rest of the room. Brutus walked over to a control panel, and activated it. A Forerunner Light Bridge appeared, connecting the pedestal to the floor. On the pedestal, a control panel appeared. Brutus began to walk towards it, when he was suddenly enveloped in gold light.

When the light cleared up, Brutus was in a completely different location. Floating in the air before him was a metal ball with a yellow eye. An Oracle... Brutus thought. "Greetings, I am 358 Decisive Savior, Monitor of Installation 08."

Ssh... Don't expose my plot holes... jk. I actually hadn't thought of that.

Currently, I'm writing a little bit of Chapter 4 every day. So it might take a little while depending on how much I feel like writing.
