Subject: Did the Covenant ever fear the UNSC?

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

They were afraid of what humans would do to their religion from the very start.

"Find where the liar hides, so that I may place my boot between his gums!" - Rtas 'Vadum

In the Return the Shipmaster said then Alpha Halo was destroyed, many began to seriously question their faith. At that point you could say they were starting to fear. Humanity destroying Halo is, to them, essentially like Humanity defeating their gods will.

If the Covenant thought that the Forerunners wanted them to find Halo and use it, then how could Humanity possible interfere with that? If the Forerunners allowed it, then why? All those sorts of questions would be asked I guess.

The Chief was the major foil to the Covenant at the time, and the only active Spartan in the events of Alpha Halo, Delta Halo, Earth's last stand, and the Ark.

It's conceivable that the events of Blue team on Onyx reached Truth's attention, but let's be serious here dude. He said "demon," which is singular, and we all knew he meant the Master Chief.

Um, yes. Because they got reports stating Master Chief was the last DEMON.

Duh they would refer him to singular. There is no proof, whatsoever they considered him worse then any other.

Oh, another fun fact. The Spartan IIs, for the most part, ALL WORE THE SAME ARMOR. How the hell would they differentiate between two Spartans? The answer. They wouldn't. To them, all demons were the same.

Grey Team wore some custom armor (heavily modified Mark IV if I recall correctly), all other Spartan IIs got Mark V at least, and only Blue Team have the Mark VI. But that's beside the point. The literal interpretation of your point holds, but the implied point that the Covenant wouldn't be able to tell the Chief from any other Spartan is not sustained.

Mostly because of his armor, but mostly because he's the most ubiquitous antagonist the Covenant had to face. The only time the Covenant squared off with Spartans when John wasn't there was in miscellaneous encounters that had tertiary influence on the major events of the Human-Covenant War (i.e: events of Onyx, Blue Team + others on Reach before the Chief showed up to save the day).

Anyways, I wouldn't say the Covenant fear the Spartans--or at least, the Covenant that matter. John engendered the term "demon," but obviously it applies to all Spartans.

You know they didn't get mark 6 until they got on earth right?

And yes the covenant are afraid of spartans, just not the UNSC.

I'm aware of that.

Thus they looked like any other spartan II prior to that. And we can't say much about grey team until we find out if they are alive or not. same for black.

There have been multiple times in the Halo universe where members of the Covenant (other than Grunts) have been shown to fear the UNSC, such as in Contact Harvest where Maccabeus expresses worry over the possible might of the humans, and even late in the war some Elites expressed concern, as seen in the link below.

I think they'd be afraid for a bit after one Spartan blew up an entire Halo Ring...twice...and survived both times...

Prophet of Truth: "But the Demon, this Master Chief..."
Arbiter: "By the time I learned the Demon had hit, it was too late."

They were referring specifically to John as THE demon. In the books they referred to spartans as demons, but in the games they referred to him specifically as THE demon. There are many instances to back that up. We all know exactly who they were calling the demon, so I have no idea why you are fighting it.

did the Covenant fear humanity as a whole, probably not!

did the Covenant fear the SPARTAN-II troopers, totally or else why give them the moniker 'demon' and seem afraid.

the Covenant at first don't fear or respect humanity, but later in the war as the Covenant losses mount and mount, would imagine they would come to respect us as a worthy adversary, especially the Elites, could see them developing the most respect, especially for the SPARTAN troopers.

Yes, the covenant absolutely feared humanity and the UNSC. But everyone had to keep pretending they wern't.

The High Prophets knew of humanity's true origins, that it would mean their downfall.

The Elites knew how brave human soldiers were, how tenatious and how they would kill thousands of covenant despite overwhelming odds.

The Grunts and Jackels knew any deployment against UNSC meant almost certain death for most of them.

The Brutes possibly wern't afraid due to them apparently not having the capabbility to be afraid.

Drones and Hunters, hive minds maybe not applicable but the Hunters could respect UNSC personell as fellow warriors.

"The demon" is the name they had for John specifically, not all spartans.

Being the leader of the most badass covenent killingest group of men and women in the UNSC gets you that kind of reputation.

At that point, he was believed to be the last. Why would they refer to him as "a demon" instead of "the demon"? "The demon" simply meaning "The spartan present at alpha halo."

Yes, we know who they are calling demon, however I seem to be the only one currently who remembers by game-time, the bulk of the Covenant believed Master Chief to be the only one left, thus "The demon".

Tell me how they could distinguish Master Chief from the other Spartans at a glance please.

Considering that he's the only Spartan to personally come up close to assassinate a high prophet deep in their territory alone not once, but twice...well..I'm sure they'd be considering him to be a far more worse direct threat than the others.

And as stated before he's the one to personally destroy a Halo and they've identified him specifically as the "Master Chief" at the start of Halo 2. So I'd say that's some significant recognition right there compared to the other Spartans.

Well, true about A, despite the fact they thought him as the last.

B: Master Chief probably came from their intercepting of comm messages, and all the marines called him "Master Chief"

Tell me otherwise. Everything we have seen points to the spartans having swapped out certain pecies of their gear (helmets, shoulder pads etc). Even halseys journal states that she worked to get these more specific pieces of gear to her spartans.

All the spartans did not look or act identical, believe it or not.

  • 05.31.2011 10:53 AM PDT

I'd say the Covenant only truely feared the Flood.

Even Spartans weren't that feared throughout the series. In fact: Most books mention Elites regarding Spartans as being a formidable and respectable enemy.....not even better or let alone on par with them (a few exceptions not mentioned).
Its not until Chief destroys Halo that they come to fear the "last" Demon. When Chief shows up at High Charity you can notice how the events Chief triggered, also triggered fear within the Covenant.

But fear towards the UNSC? No. Never. Mild respect for the persistance of the UNSC at most. And sure: Grunts might have been terrified, but who wouldn't be if they were contantly used as cannon fodder?
Only real human thing they somewhat feared is how Humanity somehow survived when and where they didn't expect them (Cole Protocol for instance), how it seemed humans could slip past the Covies net and survive.

You are telling me, at a glance, an elite could point out to me Master Chief (when nearly all the mainline S2's used the exact same armor.)

I simply find that incredibly hard to believe. I think in Mass Effect an alien (Or a human) makes the comment about another species "All looking alike." to them.

Frankly, in armor, the Covenant would be able to, or care to, notice tiny differences in posture or behavior.

Edit: Last post brings up a good point. I remember more about the Elites simply respecting the Spartans more, but never fearing them.
