Subject: Mendicant Bias and the larger scope of the Halo story post-Halo 3.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

DeceptionCobra brought up an interesting point in one of his threads pondering MB's current state of being either good or bad. Now my immediate impression was "well he wants to atone so he must be good", but after giving it some thought I think there's more to it.

The Forerunner, such bastards! In Cryptum my suspicions of them being more to them than the grand overseers of the galaxy were confirmed, it was no revelation to me that they were utter wankers.

I can see the Forerunners becoming quite bitter that they've exiled themselves from the Orion Arm. They have left behind a shattered empire and left the Orion Arm for reasons apparently unknown, be it "following in Their footsteps" or some other reason.

But as we know, humanity was given the Mantle before the Forerunners left which made them Reclaimers. Now I'm not really in a position to know anything about Forerunner politics, but there would certainly not be a unanimous agreement within their government to pass down everything that was theirs to a race they once despised and looked down on. That would be like handing over control of the world to Soviet Russia.

So then, perhaps there was a larger plan formed? What if giving humanity the Mantle was only a temporary thing? What if they were nurturing humanity to rebuild their empire until they were strong enough to return and take it back and MB was trying to atone by helping the Forerunners do this. This could also explain why the Assembly didn't want humanity to use Forerunner technology.

Compare this scenario to Mass Effect. The Reapers leave behind their technology (Mass Relays, the Citadel etc) for organic races to use so they develop down the paths they desire (destroy the Collector Base, folks). I can see this being applicable to the Forerunners because they aren't going to be happy about going from the greatest force in the galaxy to pitiful shells.

Thoughts?

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Makes sense, I know I would be bitter if I was once super powerful and then reduced to nothing. Makes me wonder if they were waiting for us to rediscover the countermeasure against The Flood too.

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

Ive been waiting months for you to post something to talk about.

anyways this wouldn't make sense. in all reality of it the forerunners are good and do have good intentions, it was the government they had set up that failed them. This wouldn't fit anything that we currently know about them nor would this be a good route to take.

Not to mention that humanity fought them for an estimated 100 years using only desperation and a third of their population. So had they been clear minded and at full population the didact even ponders what if really would have been like.

I don't know....Didact seemed seriously depressed in the Iris Campaign, and the Librarian and Didact were definitely talking about how we're special and we deserve to live and all.

It just seems... wrong to put it plainly; it doesn't flow well with the kind of story they seem to be aiming for. The Forerunners' punishment for their sins was Halo, or the Flood. They've learned their lesson.

To be fair, Didact and the Librarian were far from being your standard Forerunner (I'm quite appalled they actually referred to themselves as such). Their views and ambitions deviated from that of the Forerunner Empire.

Quick Mendicant Bias question: in the majority of Halo media MB is shown as having a male personality, but in Cryptum he is a she. What gives?

Its Cryptum. What do you expect? It already ****s up the Halo cannon severely. Why not go the extra mile and turn Mendicant Bias, who actually seemed menacing from the terminals, into a girl?

Good God. Halo was ruined by that piece of crap. Why not just burn the games completely while your at it?

Cryptum was amazing, and by far the best Halo novel, it was just confusing.

Secondly where the hell was MB even referred as a "she" in Cryptum?

He appears as a green female figure if I recall.

He's perfectly human. ;)

Not claiming to be an master historian but...

I was under the impression that the Librarian made a bit of a rogue decision to choose humans and the Reclaimers. You're suggesting that the Forerunners decided collectively to make humans the chosen race? Is this implied in Cryptum or the terminals?

So they weren't necessarily wiped out. Something must of happened. They all headed to the Ark, the last of them atleast, and after that no one knows what happened to them. We know the Flood didn't destroy them at the Ark, they're defenses held. It's also strange that they disapeared from the shield worlds as well. Did they retreat to a different galaxy? Wasn't leaving the galaxy the Forerunner's "Great Journey"? And if they left, why didn't they keep in touch? It sure would've been nice if they helped save their "reclaimers" from imminent extinction.

I've had this conversation several times. It wouldn't make sense to preserve several species except for your own. The Forerunner are out there, but where and why aren't they at the Ark or shield worlds? Are they keeping tabs on their Reclaimers?

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

Well we still haven't heard anything from the Forerunner series about the Mantle being passed on. Right now I'm kind of in a wait a see mood when it comes to the Forerunner and all of the new bits of information that we have been unable to piece together.

So the Forerunners were jerks...

1) Destroyed their creaters
2) Destroyed an innocent race (Humanity)
3) Are power hogs
4) Looked down on other species

Humanity!

F-ck yeah!!!
