Seeing as I'm supposed to be writing an essay right now and I need some procrastination, what's your best shot at making multiplayer fit in with the Halo canon?

My two theories:

1. It's an elaborate holographic exercise for Spartans in training.
Pros: It explains why there's covenant weapons and armored vehicles in the game without the covenant, to get the spartans used to using enemy equipment.

It explains why they're fighting over a -blam!-ing flag.

Cons: Why is there a Halo on all the maps when the humans didnt know about the Halo arrays yet?

2. A war has broken out between human factions after the covenant war.

Pros: Not many.

Cons: Why would they be red vs blue?

Anyway, give it your best shot to justify this.

I think you're looking into this way too deeply.

Yeah but that's the point of putting off an essay. You think about stupid crap instead of what you're supposed to do.

The first theory sounds plausible. What if there are maps on Halo rings and the Ark because the war is over. Because there isn't much to fight, the Spartans need to be kept in fighting condition by excercises.

This pretty much. I think it's just a simulation, like that one in Jason X where they put on some glasses and they begin to train.

Red vs. Blue anyone?

It isn't.

That's my best Canon "excuse."

The spartans are actually Marines.

I am the voice of reason... It's why I keep my mouth shut

I do think Rooster Teeth offer the best explanation so far... that Spartans continued to be trained after the war with the covenant. Some were very good and were used as 'training exercises' for the very good ones :p that's why there are so many noobs in multiplayer (like me :D) and so few who are exceptional

Multiplayer maps are canon, except weapons and spawn emplacements offcourse.

Clones. Kinda. On one of the CE maps it says "Spartan clone training facility."

I do think simulations makes more sense, though.

BLAM!

I've always just considered MM to be Spartan Training simulations.

Firefight maps, on the other hand, could easily be incorporated into Halo canon.

A couple weeks ago I heard somebody on XBL say it was "Spartan Heaven," kind of like Valhalla, where all the dead Spartans have nothing to do but chill and play some CTF games. Kind of like football but more interesting.

Not true. Bungie says that the maps are pure speculation. There is no connection between them and canon.
Actually they're all meant to be real places in the Halo Universe (but without the teleportes etc. For example that Chiron place is on Mars and was a training facility for some Spartans. Gamma Station (I think it's Condemned) was where the Chief found Johnson, Jenkins and those other two guys. I don't understand how Boarding Action would work though.

My name is Legion, for we are many.

Multiplayer is a place where people compete with or against each other. The only thing "canon" about MP is the way the maps fit in with the games' story's setting.
