Imagine a triangle. It's perfect, but a little plain. You take a chisel, and carve a small decorative symbol into it to make it a little more interesting. People like it, but it could use a little more.
So you then take a sledgehammer..

dissagree halo 2 is the best
Campaign-wise, Halo 2 is the worst game. It felt too much like a copy of H:CE's campaign with only minor differences, and had a cliffhanger ending which I personally hate.
Anyway, among the things that make ODST's campaign quite memorable are the following:
- You're not playing an augmented super soldier again, i.e. the Master Chief, but basically a normal human beings even though they are elite soldiers, i.e. ODSTs.
- This in turn means that you don't run as fast, don't jump as high, and are generally weaker, which makes for more thrilling gameplay.
- Your goal is not to single-handedly defeat the Covenant and Flood, but to survive and find out what happened to your squad. And just in case someone missed the inherent irony, you're actually fighting to SAVE A COVENANT in the final parts of the campaign.
- Neither H2 nor H3 succeeded at all in capturing the proper feeling and atmosphere the games ought to have. After all, you're fighting a losing war against a technological superior alliance of aliens that are hell-bent to completely wipe out the human race. All the dread, despair, frustration, fear, and depression that such a situation are not delivered at all except for H:CE, and even there it's by far not as palpable as in ODST.
- On the same note, all other Halo games are too bright and colorful for my taste. Not that I dislike bright and colorful in general, but lighting and color schemes play a huge rule in transporting the basic feel of a game. And for games with a starting situation as described above, bright and colorful is a bad choice.
- The transition from playing the Rookie to playing Buck, Dutch, Mickey, or Romeo is far smoother than the transition from playing Master Chief to playing the Arbiter (and vice versa) in H2.
- Playing a total of five difference characters and experiencing their respective parts of the story through their eyes is a lot of fun.
- Having a squad mate with you during some missions in form of an NPC is quite fun and provides a lot of banter, ranging from fun to interesting. And unlike in Reach, they actually do their job and don't get in your way ... unless you rely on Buck to be a decent gunner on Coastal Highway when playing on legendary.
I agree with most of what you just said, but only minor differences between CE and 2?
