"Where ere thou hast been, here or in yon world manifest? Canst thou tell what is, or what was, or what is to come? No thing shall last. Yet there are some things that will never change. History is written in blood, yet are battles really lost on the battlefield? Canst thou tell me where thou comest, and where thou goest, and what is, or what was, or what will be? For everything remains, AS IT NEVER WAS."

That shipmaster probably got killed after they returned due to his actions. Thel' Lodamee probably got promoted.
Why on Earth would 'Lodamee get promoted? He was the one that "failed." If anything the Shipmaster would have been praised.
In Legends, the Major is made to be Thel 'Vadamee. 343 did a quick sweep under the carpet by making him Thel 'Lodamee, but the creator meant for him to be the Arbiter in Halo 2-3. He painted him to be a coward, and completely fudged up how he became Arbiter. While it may have been "fixed," I still resent the creator of The Package for that.

Then what business does anyone like that have coming here to discuss Halo canon?
Why don't you ask them? I'm merely trying to show how the Extended Universe isn't necessary for the games to stand alone.

AJW is right, I don't think what he's saying is that anyone who does want to read or watch stuff from the expanded universe is wrong.
It seems to me that what he is saying is that the people who go around saying "only the games are canon, I don't accept anything but the games as a source of canon" is in the wrong.
Okay, last night I worded what I'm intending incorrectly. What I am trying to say is that people who don't accept the EU as canon are able to form a cohesive "canon" with the games alone. Are they somewhat foolish? Personally, I believe so, yes. However I don't think it my place to shout at them like they're blasphemers when they're able to understand what's going on in the games just fine. Their non-acceptance of the EU doesn't affect how I perceive the canon - unless they try to intrude - so why should I or anyone else butt in on their understanding?
They may be viewing the Halo Universe incompletely, they may be technically wrong, but the moment we step on their feet for having a different opinion, we're in the wrong.
Did you know there are still people who refuse to accept that Luke Skywalker fell to the Dark Side, even though it's accepted in the Star Wars EU? Hell, there are people who still don't accept Episodes I,II, and III into the Star Wars canon! There are always going to be these type of people, and it's more foolish and exhausting to hunt them all out and tell them their wrong than simply stick to our views. It's far easier to just shrug and say "Eh, okay."
That's all I'm trying to get at.
