CE: Normal (Easy for 343 Guilty Spark because of the novel's reasoning)
Halo 2: Normal
Halo 3: Heroic

What do you think and why?

You were totally and absolutely correct in every way, I don't know why we were arguing, you're so amazing I should never have doubted you.

Legendary for all, with the exception of Elite shield strength (Zealots and Spec Ops leaders could survive direct rocket hits on Lengendary in CE). The damage is spot-on, with plasma draining shields in a few shots and killing like it does canonically, and getting shot in the head with a beam rifle will kill you.

This.

Elites in the books are even more ruthless than seen on Legendary settings.

I've heard heroic across the board.

  • 06.02.2011 7:44 AM PDT

Fascinating...

Halo 1 to 3 ?...Legendary period. Heck , that's not even canon. The elites in the book are far more stronger than the Chief. And since when did it take a full assault rifle clip to kill off one damn grunt....

  • 06.02.2011 8:04 AM PDT

I don't view different difficulty levels as "more canon" based on how much damage the enemy does.

That's purely game balance/mechanics.

I think it would be Legendary for damage done to the player, but easy for the damage that the player does. Everybody does insane damage, but has few hitpoints.

I will never understand how people manage to translate the fact of them struggling with each other and being equally matched into the fact of one being far stronger than the other.

This, but grunts would probably be closer to normal levels of health...but also more numerous.

Canonically speaking, Heroic.

Here's an example: It takes few bullets to kill Grunts, Jackals, and Elites (no shields, as you can see on Halo Wars cut-scene where Forge, Ander and couple of marines waltz through forerunner ruins, and got ambushed by elites with needlers. One shot kills Marine in back and a marine dropped a elite with few bursts of assault rifle. Then, two marine drops quickly.)

Here's a video of this:

Bungie Pentathlon - who actually cares ?

For me the in-game difficulty ratings should be:

Easy
Normal
Heoric
Legendary
Books (got to think of a name!)
Mythic

No difficulty is even close to canon. Plasma weapons are actually much more deadly, small arms rounds can't penetrate Mjolnir armor, enemies die from few Assault Rifle rounds anywhere in their body, Elites and Spartans are actually much more agile, engaging a Brute in hand to hand combat causes very different results than in any of the games, enemies don't actually walk against boxes/throw grenades at themselves/do anything as stupid... should I go on?

My point is that gameplay is very different from canon. If I had to say how hard fighting against the Covenant actually is, I would say Legendary, but no difficulty shows it as it actually is.

Quite correct, in one of the books a Marine takes one needler shard to the face and it's game over. In theory a dug in grunt with a volley of plasma fire could wipe out several marines.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

The closest comparison would be both sides of the battlefield have their health on easy. Even less actually.

Yup, just thinking it's a shame they didn't take an idea from Rare's Goldeneye 64 and had the "007 mode" where you could alter the enemy health, damage etc - (not talking about custom games)

Such as Brute melee's are 200%, grunt health 25% etc etc

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Imagine both sides have their settings on less than Easy. Take the books for example, one Needler shard to the face and you're done. Alternatively, a few AR bullets and an Elite is down.
