More than likely it had its own power source, so why not just overload the station's reactor like the Fermion? The resulting explosion should be more than large enough to destroy the Nav data on the Circumference.

Maybe I'm just overlooking something.

Of course you do.
I figure, that there is a common and prevalent spore native to Reach that is invisible to all human detection. The inhabitants of Reach had been consuming said spore for years. The effects of this Alien spore reduce human intelligence and logical decision making so that when the Covenant invaded, all of the human military commanders thought of the most ass backwards idiotic unrealistic plans ever.
Evidenced by the events of Halo Reach of course.


Well, that explains why the Falcons didn't strafe the courtyard at the beginning of the ONI mission.
