Subject: Does everyone in the UNSC really have neural implants?

Am I supposed to write something funny here?

So I have seen people here say that, but it seems kinda impossible for everyone in the UNSC have a brain surgery. Also I'm pretty sure some people would not want it.

I checked neural implant pages on halopedia and halo nation, and both are the same, and say everyone has it. But there are no sources.

The pages list the functions of basic implant being IFF and showing guns reticle, but there are some problems with that.

First: If implant makes you see the reticle, then why we see those green eyepieces?

Second: IFF could be achieved by some random chip somewhere, like in shoulder, as seen in arms race. Yes, it could be vaccinations, but wouldn't people already have them? (There was stuff about extensive vaccination program in Halsey's journal)

Or is it said somewhere else, that everyone has implants?

EDIT: VISR page on Waypoint says about the ODST VISR that "Unlike the variant used by SPARTAN-II super-soldiers, there is no neural interface prerequisite to the VISR."and"At its core, VISR is a standard HUD that offers real-time tactical information about the wearer's health, ammunition count, and mission objectives."So it's the standard UNSC HUD, and it doesn't require neural interface, so standard HUD doesn't require neural interface.

So glasses, eyepieces and helmets are only thing you need to see reticle, locations of teammates (shoulder chip or something in armor being the transmitter) and objectives. Any flaws in this?

Punks not Dead.

I Don't think everyone has them since it's probably very expensive and its pretty obvious. That not every Marine would like to see a gun reticle for the rest of his life.

My thoughts exactly, except that I think you only see the reticle if you hold a smart-linked gun.

As far as I can tell, only Lord Hood had visible implants in the back of his head.

Didn't you, or some other guy, say couple days ago that nothing visible =/= no implants?

EDIT: Here

Nope, that was somebody else. I just pointed out that Lord Hood's appears to be larger/more specialized then your random marine's.

Proof that implants don't have to be visible. Noble Team. All Spartans got it, but you don't see anything on Jun or such.

Ok, but back to on-topic. Does every member of UNSC personell have implant? Is there a legit source for that?

And if there's not, my reasoning is legit, right?

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

I thought all UNSC personnel had it, which is how marines are able to read others health and such.

Seeing how it is 500 years in the future i would be shocked if non everybody had some type of implant if not military.

Yes they do. Also in the landfall live action trailers you can actually see them being installed. (90% sure, havnt seen them for a while)

Do you mean the thing they put to the guys shoulder? I already talked about it in the OP.

EDIT: Also, source for implant being in everyone?

It was my understanding that all UNSC received at least some form of implant when they enlisted.

At their most basic I imagined they are little different from the passive RF chips people put in their pets nowadays. It would serve as an IFF for other UNSC forces in the area, and would contain a complete copy of the soldier's medical records and CV jacket

It would also interface with UNSC equipment and allow them to access items they were rated for. They would function as a combination passcard/keyring.

Yes I'm fairly young. No, that doesn't mean I'm automatically dumber than you or have less life experience, thats just generally the case. I am not your general case.

They all have neural links, though only officers and high ranking non-coms (sergeant-majors and the like) have visible neural links.

That is correct :)

In it's most basic form, the neural lace acts as in IFF transponder and storage for medical records, etc.

On an interesting side note, this exact same technology is being investigated and developed for serving men and women of today :)

Source?

And is it on the back of the head, or in shoulder (arms race) or somewhere else?

The neural implants of marines are fairly basic. Not as good as the ones Spartan's have. I believe they only show bullet count and reticule. And yes... wtf is the green eyepiece for.

It's probably not really "Brain Surgery" at that point so much as as a two-second procedure that you undergo after you get your head shaved and paperwork filled-out.

It's like getting a vaccination. Get in, get out.

Is it possible to get the whole part here? Chip sounds like something you put into spinal cord, and I doubt anything there affect seeing. And if it's put into your brain, I don't see it being upgraded easily, because if it's just a chip, I think it would be inside the skull. (You can see stuff outside in oddballs)

The rest of their HUD.

Why they would need extra thing for rest of the HUD? If this chip/implant/whatever already shows the reticle, why it couldn't show the rest of the stuff?

  • 06.11.2011 7:49 AM PDT

"I'm sorry man, I don't even know why I got in on this side... SHOTGUN!!!"

I don't think the chip has any correlation with the gun reticle. They have small eyepieces on their helmets linked up to a smartlink scope on their gun. That would seem much more practical than a permanent reticle.

I would assume all of the military personnel do have neural implants though. Thats how they're listed as friendlies on your radar I think.

As I said in the OP, that can be achieved by having a chip somewhere else, like in the shoulder. Which is what I believe was put into marine in Arms race.

  • 06.11.2011 8:20 AM PDT

"I'm sorry man, I don't even know why I got in on this side... SHOTGUN!!!"

Yeah, I can agree with that. But I'm not suggesting the implant serves that function exclusively. The posts above me wrote about possible MedRef's and HUD, where the HUD would probably need to be a neural implant.

The only thing I find odd about the HUD is having it appear in your eyes without a visor. That's why I don't think it works like that. It makes more sense to just have it in the visor on the helmet, and the reticle comes from the ssmartlink scope.
