This theory is basically a more advanced version based off of the text featured in this image. I've been thinking about the future of Halo, some possible outcomes for the storyline of the series, and some old theories that are good, but need improvement. Most of these theories (if not all of them) are based off of the ending of Halo 3. I've ruled out most of these theories, surprisingly one theory that I thought was a joke seemed extremely reasonable, and it stayed with me through the whole process, so here's my best theory about what happens where Halo 3 left off. If you complete Halo 3 on the legendary "difficulty" then you get a special ending. In this ending, you see Master Chief in the remains of something that looks like a ship. It's obvious that Cortana is there with him, since you hear her voice at the beginning of this ending. Master Chief continues to explore the ship, until he finally reaches some kind of special area with cryo chambers and a "dock" for Cortana. After this, he has a short conversation with Cortana. A noteable statement during this conversation is when Cortana says that all their worries are gone, the covenant, the flood, etc. After this conversation, Master Chief takes a step inside one of the cryo chambers, and says "wake me, when you need me". By that, Master Chief probably meant for Cortana to wake him up when a new threat appeared, something that could be harmful to Earth, the universe, etc, just like the Halo rings were. This ending takes place in the year 2552, so take note of that date. Now let's take a look at another series of Bungie's called Marathon. If I read correctly, in the beginning of the first Marathon game, you wake up in some kind of chamber that seems to be similar to the cryo chambers featured in the Halo series. You also wake up there after being stuck in that same spot for about 200 years. Now here's the catch. Since the ending of Halo 3 takes place in the year 2552, and the first Marathon game takes place in the year 2794, that would be about a 200 year gap in between the two. As stated, in the first Marathon game you wake up in some kind of chamber after being stuck in there for about 200 years. In Marathon, you also fight an alien force, which is also a possible scary link in between the two games. Could this mean that the protagonist in the Marathon series is actually Master Chief, and that the Halo series is all just a prequel leading up to the Marathon series? The only downfall to this theory is that Bungie has said that the Halo and the Marathon universes are not linked in any way, but maybe there is something that they're hiding. Remember, this is just a crazy theory of mine, but it makes a lot of sense. I could explain a bit more, but it's only optional if someone find a "loophole" in this theory. If you'd like to share your theories about the future of Halo, or improve on my theory, feel free to post in this thread. Thanks for reading!
