Subject: Pretty sure 343i (they own the Halo IP) thinks that TFoR > Reach

If you can read this, that means I'm not a Shaolin monk...

yet.

-in terms of canon.

Why? Because of the new definitive edition of TFoR. It's almost the same as the 10 year-old version. A bit strange that they'd release a book with the subtitle "definitive" after Halo: Reach, huh? No, not really. They're just patching up the holes in the lore.

Agreed, OP.

Obviously, they changed nothing, pretty much a proposed "spit" on Halo: Reach.

I guess in their view, Reach isn't really true canon.

If I remember right, does it not mention in the revised versions that Halsey says "The Covenant entered the system in full force today." Instead of "The Covenant entered the system for the first time."? Aka saying the Covenant have been there, just not in a major force.

Oh, and they have released the canon-explaining videos on waypoint showing both, so it's clear they don't consider one better then the other.

I'm fairly confident the "definitive edition" was a convenient way to redeploy the reissued (making it a double reissue it seems...how unnecessary...) Fall of Reach novels and help readers identify which version is not the one laden with typos.

Nope, everyone craps their pants on the 30th.

How about instead of theorizing "They hate Reach" you wander over to the waypoint forums and PUBLICLY ask them their view.

Something that can be linked to would be nice(such as a public thread on waypoint forums), to prevent any tampering.

Edit: I'd attempt such myself, if I could get into the waypoint forums at all currently.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

So basically they endorse Halo: Reach in their videos on Waypoint, but are also against it by releasing The Fall of Reach again for a second time under their watch?

Doesn't sound like concrete evidence they are retconing Halo: Reach to me.

Slow down there, buddy. Just informing the Universe about how I interpret this.

Well, yeah. Of course. I didn't say that they "hate Reach", though.

Off-topic, but everytime I try to join Waypoint, it won't let me because it says my username is already taken even though I've never joined before. You know why Green?

Those "definitive" editions came out before this was ever a problem, no? They were meant to better connect the two properties. We all know how that worked -- there was either:

a) a breakdown in communication, or more likely
b) MS just doesn't care about canon inconsistencies. Canon is whatever's going to best keep Halo's status amongst the cash cow francises. Can't say I blame 'em

The Definitive Editions came out in select stores last months, the rest is coming now.

If you saw my thread on waypoint you know my stance on this.

  • 06.05.2011 5:12 PM PDT

The 2010 Definitive Edition print of First Strike seems to be done to be compatible with both the game and The Fall of Reach.

The 2011 Definitive Edition of The Fall of Reach corrected the 2542 typo issue and made Hunters sound more familiar to humanity than the 2010 edition did.

All three Fall of Reach editions state that FLEETCOM HQ wasn't expecting Covenant presence as of August 30 at 04:40.

EDIT: I stipulate that 343 Industries didn't know how they were going to go about this until recently.
