Canonically, he hasn't had time or the means to switch.
They probably reused the blockier early CGI from Halo: Legends The Package for the prerendered trailer. I see a similarity in their design.
Canonically? I thought it wasn't really explained if he has been drifting for years or months.
He's been drifting in a ship, with no atmosphere.
where would he get a new set of armor and change into it?
I don't think it has been announced that it is necessarily new. Due to limitations or necessity the fact that he had a set of thrusters could've been not utilized in Halo 3, etc. The suits, IIRC, were designed for space combat in mind. That means he could've had thrusters from the very get-go. Just due to limitations or lack of forethought they weren't "built" into the suit in the games as a technical issue.
I think in cannon he has always had them. They just never existed in the games because they were never needed. So the sudden "addition" of thrusters isn't really an addition. Its something he has always had we aren't familiar seeing because the other games failed or neglected the fact that he had them.
That is how I rationalize it. I don't think the suit is new. It just appears "new," but really is the same ol' suit just "updated" to show all of its capabilities. Of course, this is a CGI trailer and I wouldn't place all of my bets on this being exactly the same in H4.
Neither Mk IV nor Mk V had integrated thrusters built in. The text in The Fall of Reach make it clear it's an individual unit as John tells his fellow Spartans to strap on thruster packs prior to assaulting the Covie ship near Chi Ceti (Mk IV) while James was noted to struggle with his thruster pack's harness after things hit the fan for him (Mk V). The Encyclopedia and Frank O Conner's run down of Mk VI armor in the Halo 3 launch info laden EGM list all of the Mk VI's features. Neither of which include integrated thruster systems as part of the armor's features.
The more likely explanation is that it's upgraded in progress armor that the Chief will attain at some point in the new game that is subject to change (a la bubble shield grenade from Starry Night) unless 343i wants to go the full recton route in the case of the Mk VI's thruster capabilities from the get go.
