Subject: Halo 4's Master Chief better be realistic character.

"Find The Bomb?!
Find The Bomb?!
I'm Looking For The Flag!
What The Heck Is Assualt!?"

He's a super soldier who has to deal with the most harrowing situations ever. He is trained not to show emotion and especially not wear it on his sleeve like you suggest.

Now, you see, you go on about how Chief's character is flat and corny, but those scenarios you just suggested have to be the cheesiest, most obvious and most cliche suggestions in the general genre of military/sci-fi fiction.

I was actually, you know, giving examples, not exactly something to base an argument off of at all. Just sayin. Another example would be something along the lines of seeing a Covenant kill a dead or dying Marine, and then smash its head against the wall or kill it brutally, and then turning and euthanizing the Marine, but not before saying he is "sorry", I mean, come on. I don't think you want to be playing as a walking one-liner the entire game. Unless you do in which case I will disregard you as a human being.

I agree, actually. The Encyclopedia says there's a chance what he's been through might have been traumatizing to him. There was a hint in Halo 3 that he was pissed when Johnson died, and looked kind of down when Miranda died. But thats just my interpretation of his body movements.

I'm hoping Halo 4 is more like the book character. I mean this guy has lost all of his family, friends, allies and pretty much everything. No human can go through that without scars.

Not saying make him overly emotional, but more obvious hints to his scarring would be nice.

Well, I'm typing this, so whether you like it or not I'm a human being.

But in my opinion, Chief isn't a "walking one-liner" as you put it. Like I said, he's been a soldier so long he can't remember what his life was life before he was conscripted, he's been indoctrinated and taught hundreds of times to suppress his emotions, thoughts and feelings and stay focused on his objective - Chief, as a rule, should not show much emotion, if any.

Besides, in the example you gave, that simply wouldn't effect Chief. He's fought the Flood, the Covenant, Insurrectionists - he's not put off by blood and gore. Even if it did bother him, he'd simply take note of the emotion and store it in some "box" in his head so that he stays focussed. That's actually detailed in The Fall Of Reach, by the way.

My idea of a "walking one-liner" would be the Terminator, or Duke Nukem. Duke's a great example of how cheesy hero-characters can be, and thankfully Bungie had the insight to suppress that idea and make Chief a professional.

That is exactly what I am saying. His character in Halo 1 and 2 was so overwhelmingly ridiculous and unrealistic, there was some points I had to turn the game off and laugh for a moment or two at how corny it was. Now, I can understand him throwing a temper trantrum would be unrealistic. But could we at least hear him speaking through gritted teeth for once? Or being a good samaratin and comforting a civilian, like Jorge. Even a "Don't worry, you'll be okay, I'll make sure of it." would be great! That would make the game, well part of it anyway.

Actually, when you put Jorge as an example, especially "gritted teeth", that doesn't sound so bad. I highly doubt Chief is like Jorge or Kurt, as we've seen in the books, but expressing some sort of frustration or concern by talking through his teeth would make him even more bad-ass.

He isn't Jorge. He is John, I can't imagine his emotions survived all that he has been throw, especially rekilling the entirety of his old infected crew from the Autumn.

Maybe balling his fists a little bit. But then of course he'd recollect himself, reload his Assault Rifle, and get right back to the killing. But indeed. It would add more depth to the character by adding some sort of concern by asking about the situation at hand, or swearing to accomplish the mission for the good of all humanity, followed by an intense battle scene as the Chief slays his foes with renewed vigor.

I also wouldn't mind to see the Chief fail, before admitting that Captain Keyes was right, that winning isn't everything. It would be cool to see the Master Chief evolve as the story goes on, and become more of a dynamic character than the flat character he has been in Halo 1 and 2. Halo 3 saw some character development and I think it would be fitting to see Halo 4 develop it even further.

Talking about realism in a video game never works..especially when the content is so unrealistic, like Halo's is.

Plus, talking about it on here will have no effect on MCs character. 343 is making Halo 4, not Bungie. Bungie has no say on the story whatsoever.

Spartan´s have been trained for years to supress their emotions. I highly doubt they would change the universal icon that the Master Chief currently is.

This. He's also been fighting almost non-stop for twenty years. If you've seen the -blam!- he's seen, you would be emotionless too.

  • 06.07.2011 9:03 AM PDT

Not only that he has shown emotion before... when he was training and that made him lose some close friends. He knows from the past battles that emotion just gets in the way

The emotion is there. It's not obvious, but it's there.

I actually like the voice work for the Chief. Not monotonous enough to show a complete lack of emotion, but calm enough to resemble a Spartan.

nicely worded.
