Man, one thing I have with Bungie is faith. They've always delivered the goods in the past in one way or another, just as I think (and pray to god) they will this time around. We have moments that (sort of) test us for instance, the recent news that they've dropped the ATV. Another one of these moments is New Mombasa. At the moment it's messy and sometimes quite dumb, but it'll get better soon. As the game comes out, people (all right, under-12's!!!) will know the facts etc. Therefore, less mess.

One other thing. It says that when posting, check that the same thread hasn't been posted before. Now I'd say that it's acceptable (especially around here) to post a topic again say, a week later. Now, what I want to know is, I started all this New Mombasa thing in the Septagon. I made a thread about it which is right here. Now why did people blatantly ignore my thread? Especially while it was still on the first page!
Posting a thread on exactly the same subject as one which has been there for quite a few days (nearly at the top of page 1 still!!!) is technically spamming (now correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that one of things that we hate about New Mombasa???).

People, I don't want to come across as a moaner, but my advice is look before you leap (post). There's two threads about New Mombasa on the first page alone! All of them are technically re-worded versions of mine. Seriously people (well some), I think that before a "strike team" goes into action, you'd better shape up a bit yourselves (again, not everyone).

I don't want to come across as being envious that my thread sank or anything, I'm just saying that I got a lot of good input off of that thread from some popular members here aswell (Mods included). So instead of people posting their thoughts there, how come they made new threads? People can be really hypocritical round here sometimes, and one more thing before I end this rant; People, it's in-advisable to play Moderator. Bungie have 7 Mods now that look after the forums very well in my opinion. They're not too harsh, not too soft. It's their job to keep the forums in check, not yours. Don't be vigilante's. The best way to help out is to report anything like spam etc to one of them by PMing them (Moderator Member List) the link to the problem thread, or by leaving it here for them.

Sorry if I come across bad, just having my say.

Just about everyone will be back in school by th 12th. I doubt there'll be much of a problem after that.

(good idea though)

P.S: First post in The Septagon in a long long time =- P

Except for of course, the month before Nov 9th, and the months after.Spam, flames, and spoilers will once again fill New Mombasa

Let alone for the conclusion of ILB, or the release of more info, or a trailer. Unless it is fixed, it can only get worse, no matter when school is on.

Now back to our regularly scheduled posting

NMST, I like it. Well putting aside any arguing, shouldn’t we have any rules for membership? If this turns out to be any kind of success we’ll have people who claim to be in the group going around, flaming and spamming. If we set up a chapter based society, it would be easier to control members, and keep a record of who has joined.

We also have to set up a list of rules, and make sure everyone understands exactly what type of organization we are. I’d like to see it being fairly ‘anarchic’ just because too much leadership, or hierarchal structure will lead to ineffectiveness.

I’d like to se us set up a clear response, or protocol, for as how we should spend our time in New Mombasa. The obvious ‘Mod-liness is Godliness’ approach will only work on a case by case basis, and simply shutdown the threads. I’d say we start making a couple of our own topics, and make sure to keep them informative and useful. The one thing we want to make sure of is that we don’t leave any threads made by us, open for comment so far as it would allow flaming. If we set up several good, informative, threads, and keep them there over a week, (On Front Page), all of the members who signed in for that week will see that their questions have been solved. It will limit the number of new threads that need to be made. A good thing would be to get several of the more important threads updated regularly, where the author can change the initial post to keep it relevant. This is to be a necessity, because so many people in New Mombasa won’t read any thread on pages 2-800, and will usually only read the authors opening post in the thread.

We’d need those threads to be a bastion of intellectual, thoughtful discussion. If we keep them updated regularly it will curb the amount of new threads being made.

Yes this sounds like a great idea, sign me up immediately.

I think that we should all have some way of identifying ourselves, like something in our sig or after every post.

And I was just about to say something about having 3x7 members... the two magic Bungie numbers... Well Stalin has gone for now, but I shall relay some earlier plans of his.

The original plan was to create an old-schoolers or vets chapter when the option came to do that, and selectively pick out it's members... offering positions to those who have already shown their worth and handing out task to new people to prove their Bungieness, something along the lines of an essay or a questionaire, and that followed by areview of the guy's behaviour. The Chapter/Clan/whatever was going to be somethign to do with Teachers, like the "Faculty Room" or somerthing similar, because the plan was to instruce other members of the true goodness of Bungie and it's games, and to promote a higher level of learning.
Rules I believe are one of the next steps in this plan... and the identity sig is up to you for now... my own is crafted based on the creator of the group- Stalin leader of the Red army of Russia ;-)
But one problem I face when posting on Halo 2 is that I don't know much about it at the current point in time... so I believe for the moment we should all be starting fact finding missions deep in enemy territory and working out how they think, and what the frequently asked questions are.

I love this whole big organisation thing ;-)

I just read through your post Jay... and this one is in fact different because this thread (for once) is actually a doing thread, where as yours and many others only talk about the problems... no offence but barely any of the threads erally take off into action, and I'm going to make this one if I have to carry it's butt from day one ;-)
That aside, I'm sure with your viewpoint you'd gladly join in...

It'll take longer than 20 minutes, and I still have a bit of time... it's 9:49PM, I have tonight and tomorrow morning to do a composition from scratch and a written analysis of it... and I need sleep because I have the second day of my QCS testing (a state wide test for calculating uni/college entrance scores)

Just so everyone knows, Davester88 is back, in the guise of Fatgirlsarebad88. He made several posts in the Flood, but I think goweb knows about him. They were in the same thread.

WARNING- Davester has targetted us... all NMST be aware... situation status; pedning mods arrival.

EDIT- Our thread has been dealt a massive blow by Davester and appears to be on the verge of crashing and burning... I also really need to leave to do other things or I will likewise crash and burn... I'll hang about as long as possible but I don't think it'll last.

davester88 is a very annoying problem... but there could be a way to deal with his posts directly in a way that doesn't involve writing flames, and that might show others that davester is an idiot and doesn't need reminding of it.

Let's take a hypothetical member, for instance: da troll176. He is the typical troll. He flames, spams and is generally a pain in the butt. He does this because people go and post nearly identical flames back to him.

He decides to go and make a thread in NM: "0MG hal0 2 Sux!"

In it, he posts his message: "HAHAHA! hal02 sux everone -blam!- HAHA"

Incoherent, and annoying with it. And then some other posters see it, they get angry and post: "shut up u -blam!-", which is what he wants. And so goes the exchange of spam and flames until the mods lock it.

But what if someone posted an intelligent comeback in response:
Posted by: hypothetical user who is bored of trolls
Posted by da troll176:
HAHAHA! hal02 sux everone -blam!- HAHA

Okay... so you, one person, believe Halo 2 sucks. There are a few million more Xbox users who think otherwise.

I wouldn't call this a nasty flame response. It's just a logical counterpoint. I'm not quite sure how effective it would be, but it could possibly help to shoot down troll threads in a non nasty way that wouldn't spark a flame war. Comments?

I'm certifiable.

Trolls don't care what kind of attention they get online, so long as it's attention. The way to shut them down is to ignore them... that way they don't get all excited by all the attention they receive. However, the problem is that there are a LOT of people who just can't stay away from the flames. It's these moths we have to head off if we want to shut down the trolls/spammers.

How we do that, I don't know. Maybe a well-written response to a troll/spam post may head off the moths, but it has to be crafted with them in mind and not the spammer/troller.

-- Steve points out that the first troll post is rarely the problem for the forum, it's all the follow up posts after it that clog things.

Yo Halo53, I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best bungie.net profiles of all time. OF ALL TIME!

If someone can find davestar's address I'm sure that bungie can arrange for some ninja's to show up at his door.

Also about the sig thing, I just added will be the color of the theme for the NMST. :D

Ah good times. Bu, in response to Anton, replying to them would not be the best of ideas. Instead try to create or bring a useful topic to the top so that others pay attention to it. I figured that would be an easier solution. At least for me and some others.

The leader has returned!

To be honest guys I am very excited about all of this. Its building up steam. w00t!

Firstly, my apologies to you Ops Agent 117. I intended to add you, but there were a lot of replies, and my PC screen is a mere 2 inches big (thats what it feels like sometimes). Also, anyone else I missed out, my apologies to you also.

Secondly, my e-mail address is luke4stalin@hotmail.com . I have MSN, and it is my favorite chat thingymabob, so NMST members, feel free to add me so we can discuss strategies, events etc. If you do decide to add me, please make it clear who you are. Thank you.

Thirdly, this.

*Stalin hands a packet to JAY132. JAY looks bemused, and reads the name off the packet- Chill Pills*

Take one of those every day for the next week. You will be fine.
Seriously though, we are not acting 'Moddy', we are doing the things the mods dont have time to do. We are here to help. You are either part of the solution or part of the problem. All threads about NM have lead to this... THIS is the solution to New Mombasas problems. An organised rebel group attacking NM with interesting discussion and anti-flame....guns. So chill out, dont worry, and join up. We could use your help.

Off to battle we go. Keep each other posted.
