While your intentions may have been noble, NMST turned into a bunch of snobby jerks acting as though they were superior to the other users.

This just in: You're not.

You are users, too. You have no right to get on other people's cases, and you CERTAINLY have no right to try to seperate yourselfs as the "better" posters in the forums.

My point stands from before. If you want to make the forum a better place, you do it not by being pompous and egotistical. You do it by practicing what you preach, and by posting good posts, following the rules, and providing an example for the other users as to what a model user is like.

Something every one of you NMST people have to understand is that the Bungie community is in the 10's of thousands. A lot of those are just kids who don't know or even care that a community exists, they're just interested in Halo and Halo 2, and they're not willing to delve into a forum just to find the answer to some simple question. Or, they might be brats who are just seeking trouble. Or, they might be english dropouts who are convinced that they're already the best at Halo 2, even though they haven't played it. The only way one can have complete control over the kind of people that go to a forum is to make a private, friends only forum that only trusted people can be a part of. Bungie has no intention of being so exclusive, so what you ALL need to understand is that there will always be jerks, because an open forum invites that demographic. We simply cannot control that. However, we CAN control the users with the superiority complex (IE, this militia nonsense), and we will do so if we must.

If you really want to make things easier on the moderators, you're going about it all wrong.

As far as I was concerned, that was what we were trying to do. Oh well...dreams fade and are eternally extinguished...

That makes sense. Well we can only hope the amount of spam in New Mombassa will be better after Halo 2........hope is the key word, but we can still try and make it better. Like Shishka said, practice what you preach.

Well, then, I suppose that pretty much finishes it.

Note: Shishka, Stalin did not mean for this to become what it did. His intentions were good, deep down inside I'm sure that he was merely trying to help. I really don't think he believed what he was doing was wrong, even if he was a tad misguided in his attempts. Please though, don't be too hard on him. He's fairly new and inexperienced. Though I'm sure that he can change that in time.

He was. He didn't intend for any of this to happen, and wasn't looking for personal glory or any such thing. Some ideas, yes, were too far, but the principle was helpful. I guess it could infringe on the rule "no petitions".

Nobody is getting in trouble for anything so long as the militia stuff stops. I understand the intent, but the means were wrong, which is why I stepped in.

Well, ain't that a kick in the ol' Action Sack.

*sigh*

Alright, I wash my hands of New Mombasa. I've lost all interest in its goings-on... if an effort to make an organised attempt to make it a friendlier and more fruitful place for discussion ends up in "my schwartz is bigger than yours" pettiness, then I just don't want to be there.

Forums are supposed to be fun. If it feels like work to be in them, well, I've got work to do that'll return far more and with less effort. (Selfish reason.) In its current state I can't see myself being a productive member of New Mombasa; my temper just gets too short there. (Altruistic reason.) So I'll extend my two-week vacation from the East African Protectorate to an indefinite leave.

There are other places whose posting culture fits my tastes far better, and I'll frequent them for my Halo 2 posting fix. Those who enjoy New Mombasa as is are welcome to it. Those with greater patience than I with the less-polite members of the forum have my respect and encouragement. I wish you well.

A damn shame indeed. I spent maybe 30 minutes in there trying to be a good example and whatnot, and I was either ignored or flamed… I just don’t think that there’s anything anybody can do about it.

Man, talk about a downer…

I saw NMST as a symbolism thing really. Like Students Against Drunk Driving. I thought it was a good idea to let people know that "I don't spam and am opposed to any one who does." That's all I really wanted. Not to be annoying or anything. I guess I'll just have to put that in my sig cause if I make up something cool like....UASF(Users Against Spam and Flaming) then Shishka will get pissed and yell at me.

Over 70,000 users, actually. I am happy shishka stepped in because newer users/users that didn't come on much were getting the wrong impression. As I said before I was originally all for it until I saw the direction it was going. I always have and always will be willing to help because I think this site, the community is great. One doesn't stay on a site (and constantly remain active) for nearly 2 years because he thinks it sucks and is no fun. I'm always there to be a helping hand but just because I know which forum what should go in doesn't make me better than the new user. We were all new once and I would bet you anything if I joined today I would be making the same mistakes. When I joined I also made mistakes, (just the lay out and everything was different so different mistakes) because we are all human so remember that.

Well some of us were getting annoying. I think he could have let us continue and just yelled at us to keep us in line. I wasn't doing anything different but at least I knew I wasn't alone. I think it was cool that the forum was united like that. It would have made spammers lives worse. They might have even stoped if they saw that the entire forum hated them. We souldn't have been replying to spam though. Feeding trolls is bad. Even if your just flaming the spammers.

Remember, this is all about opinion. You guys who were really into it of course won't be happy. I was in it but I saw what was happening and when that thread went up about making another "group" to go against NMST, I knew that it had to be done. I remembered those chapter wars from when I first joined the column and although I was never apart of one, I knew it wasn't a good thing. Yes he could have told certain people to stop, but it was the whole principle in having a group, a name etc. Trying to help and set a good example is good but not when associating it as a little group and it seems to other members that you think you're better than everyone else.

I feel the same way as Halo 53. I didn't realize that it had gone so far until I read Shishka's post. It really opened my eyes. In retrospect, it almost seems like what happens in a book called The Wave where a history class does a simulation of the -blam!- party until the whole school is involved and they start to oppress non-members. You know what they say, "hindsight is always 20/20." Well, that's it then, I'm out of NMST. I'll still be around, just not in NM as much.

-Baerdog7

Edit- Wow, I didn't know the name of the party that Hitler belonged to in WW2 was blammed out.

Every former NMST member should put "I do not spam and am opposed to anyone that does." in their sig. That way we can still feel united with out pissing off the mods. As long as we don't start telling people what to do.

Now I'm not a bad member, so I'm not going to say 'I told you so', but. . . .

I DID TRY AND WARN YOU PEOPLE.
Not one of you guys got onto what I was saying about playing Moderator.

I also think it's really unfortunate that a Moderator had to get in on this.

I'm not an absolute angel here, but I'm disappointed in some of the older members.

We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.

Did I do something wrong? I'm not entireley sure what the exact problem was yet. Which part of what we we're doing was the wrong one?

Some people were getting ticked at what I was saying, but I never saw why. I guess ignorance (on my part, not theirs) once again rears it's ugly head...
Dang this is depressing.

Edit- Well, at least Jay doesn't think that I was one of the main problems. I'm not one of the older members : )

Generalizations, however, are still a bad idea, JAY132. Not everyone tried to play moderator (some probably did, prehaps unintentionally, but some probably did). But not everyone. For example, some just attempted to post revelant, new info.

Anyways, enough of my rant. I'll ignore NM like I used to unless I get an urge to post something in there (which hasn't happened in a while (excluding NMST)).

actually most of us i think tried just to post relevant conversation. the problem was, I think, that we came off as snobs with our NMST designation thingy... like trying to send in boy scouts to clean up the ghetto. the boy scouts have no authority to do so, they come off as presumtuous and arrogant to the criminals in the gheeto, and while the police appreciate the sentiment, they also do not like the fact that they now have to go through extra trouble just to protect the boy scouts. not a very good analogy I guess, but it gets my point across.

oh and only a few people were being "mod wannabees"... and they did so unintentionally. reminding people of the rules is usually a good thing if done properly (yo thats against the rules watch it or the mods will get you...). the problem was, I think, the approach.

And sorry but some of the people who started this NMST nonsense WERE trying to play Moderator.

Heeeey, I am a Boy Scout (Eagle). Thats OK, though, you made an excellent point. It could have been a whole lot better, yet a whole lot worse. I said it earlier and I'll say it again, hindsight is always 20/20.
