That is not the Pillar of Autumn, how could anyone reach that conclusion? As for the trailers "canonicity," look at the ones for Halo 3. The Ark portal's activation site looked almost nothing like the final product, and the Bubble Shield closer resembled the Drop Shields in Reach.

What have we learned in the past five or six years? All the things that we saw in that >>TEASER<< aren't necessarily accurate to the letter. Mark VII? It's likely he gets an armor upgrade somewhere along the storyline, but not immediately after exiting cryo. Grenade launcher? Probably somewhere in the Armory. Jetpacks? Well, the Mark VI has boosters in the thigh-armor - as seen in the Halo Graphic Novel - it's likely they're also in the shoulder/back section.

What short story featured Mk VI with thigh boosters?

Et Eärello Endorenna utúlien.
Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar.
tenn' Ambar-metta!

Well this is what happens when Halo goes with out Bungie: Awful MJOLNIR design, mysteriously jetpack poping up from nowhere, a gun with granade capability, and awful design of the UNSC Forward unto Dawn.

Epic trilogy fail.

That armour looked cool.

I have a theory:
It's his mark VI but upgraded by forerunner machines.

Any linkage to where it says the Mark VI has jetpack like thrusters auto-built in?

I doubt any exists. From what I know the thrusters were attached to the armor.

Everything I know of said thrusters were part of a pack they wore over the armor, and not part of it.

Attached/over almost the same thing.

We was in a cryo since Halo 3 tube.

It's still MK VI.

Just made extremely ugly and stupid.

  • 06.06.2011 9:06 PM PDT

Considering the almost identical dent/scratch in Master Chief's chestplate, I'm pretty sure it's just a graphical update to the Mark VI, with a few new components ala what Fred and co. did in The Fall of Reach.

i agree with the first post, hes not on the Dawn, and thats not the same planetoid object hes floating towards in Halo 3
the objects shape and look are similar but different
i think he was somehow able to acquire upgraded armor on the surface of the unknown planet at the end of 3, possibly it could of had a secret ONI facility of it and he acquired it there, this is all speculation but theres many differences between the situation at the end of 3 and this trailer for 4

they may not look like the same ship. and it may not look like the same armor, but 343 is the kind of company that is for some reason going to HAVE to change everything to their own representation.

This will drive me away from 343

Glory and fame, blood is our name!
Souls full of thunder, hearts of steel!
Killers of men, a warrior's friend!
Sworn to avenge our fallen brothers!
Sons of the gods, today we shall die.
Open Valhalla's door!
Let the battle begin, with swords in the wind! Hail Gods of War!

That'd be like giving Kirk's Enterprise the hull from Picard's Enterprise. It just makes zero sense.

It's quoted in almost all the books with S-II's in them.

It's a T-PACK, which was built into Mark VI.

Please quote where it says the thruster pack is built right into it.

So far today people have been saying that such a device existed for the Mark IV and V with great confidence saying it's "in the books" when in reality the books outright contradict their statements.

The Fall of Reach page 144:

"Spartans," John said, "grab thruster packs and make ready to go EVA. Everyone else-" He motioned to the three technicians.
"-get into the forward cabin. If we fail, they'll be coming after the Pelican. Protect Dr. Halsey."
He moved Aft. Kelly handed him a thruster pack and he slipped it on.

That was for Mark IV armor. NO integrated thruster pack.

Page 348:

James almost had the explosives rigged to the nose free. A shower of needles hit him. One stuck the tank of his thruster harness-penetrated.

Obviously if it was integrated there wouldn't be a harness for the thing since it's built right into the armor. Further down the same page:

Linda shrugged out of her thruster harness.

No need to delve into how that shows it's a separate piece. That's for Mk V.

I do not have the Halo Encyclopedia on me currently so I cannot directly quote it, but I know that of all the features listed of the Mk VI, there is no mention of an integrated thruster pack included in the standard issue Mk VI that the Chief possessed By all means though, if you have it on you and you know it says otherwise provide quotes and page numbers.

So please anyone taking the stance that it has been established the Mk VI has built in thrusters please show some proof.

Also for those wanting to say "it's just a CGI trailer and not a reflection of the final product" I say I'm quite well aware. This does not, however, in the slightest bit affect the perceptions of members of the community who believe or do not believe the Mk VI had thrusters built in. This is after all the Universe forum first of all, not the Halo 4 forum. This is a canon subject that should be clarified with finality before guilible users who have no access to canon materials first hand start mouthing off saying incorrect things just because they've seen someone say "it says so in the books" and nothing more past that.

It's not MK VII, if you read books jetpack has always been there, and is seen in H2 and H3, it's just those two pieces of armor that hang low beneath the sheild generator. You just never got to SEE them in ACTION.

Idiot -blam!- Sucking Jypsy.

Bringin' Hayabusa back in style.

The ship was attacked or under duress of some sort. The ship's appearance has changed. The engines could have been blown off. You saw the destruction happening right, or were you just focused on Master Chief's armor?

The books NEVER mentioned built in thrusters. If you're so sure by all means do correct me and present factual evidence. As it stands I've already presented direct passages from The Fall of Reach that already confirm that Mk IV and V posses no such thing. There is no mention that I'm aware of that even states the existence of such a feature for the Mk VI. So before calling someone an idiot, do have something to back it up.

"Source: Halo 4 Reveal Trailer"

Yeah, that article is real legitimate...Oh wait. That still does not account for the fact that such a feature still did not exist prior to the visuals shown in this trailer, and despite the Mk VI features already all being revealed beforehand in text.

Halopedian does not cut it as "proof"

I agree with your theory of new tech upgrades, and would probably say that Cortana undertook them to stave off boredom while Chief was asleep in cryo...

We are all feeding the Gluttons of Privilege as we fuel our economy with third world blood

Yea but say they switched ships and went to a new ship that looked similar even if it had a special suit of armor on it, the ship at the end still appears to be a derelict frigate adrift in space in which case there would be no life support systems in which John could switch or even safely make adjustments to the armor.

  • 06.06.2011 11:10 PM PDT

For the fun of it!

Well, there actually still could be life-support within the ship... It obviously has power, and doors would've sealed off any sections exposed to vaccuum, and a ship that big would probably have multiple life support generators troughout the ship to ensure contunual running if one fails. I agree that it has to be the same frigate, and that John wouldn't have woken up throughout the traverse, but it is still possible that Cortana made adjustments while he was in cryo...
