Many groups have seperate websites associated with their groups. I know MBT has one.

I think what he means is, the website being primary, and the group secondary.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

We have 2 actully and a 3rd is in the works.

To the topic at hand.
Websites have many advantages that bungie does not let the members have, for example we can post movies, pics, and have custom Avatars.

Also with a website you are not restricted to just 1 forum and you can choose or make whatever skin you want.

The main advantage is the website ( for Mbt at least) it has more members then the actual group because you dont have to be a member of bungie to see it and the ethernet traffic is far greater.

Now the groups should stay alive to, I like how simple groups are to use and there is more of a community feel to the older groups opposed to a new site.

Groups should not have to stay Loyal to bungie if that means risking the death of the group. If a website keeps you going then thats just how it is. I doubt there are any groups out there that have a website and dont use the group.

Its OK to have a website.

I don't think there's any reason to have a problem with group-related websites.

This iteration of groups certainly takes a more Halo 2 clan approach than the previous 7thC, but that doesn't mean there's a mandate that states users can only use the seventh column as a Halo 2 clan site.

Further, since we don't offer any form of file hosting or sharing, sometimes an extra website is necessary to expand on the functionality of the group.

Then there are groups like my own Igni Ferroque or the Body Politic that don't focus on Halo 2. Heck, the moderators have our own dedicated group for the sake of keeping an easy to access line of communication open between each other.

I don't think anyone is bothered by corollary sites, or non-halo 2 groups.

Personally I think spending money on a group site is a little excessive. Groups have forums to talk to each other on, and usually websites only have a forum and a cool front page (OMFG!!!onE!1!). So what I'm trying to say is spending money on a front page isn't really helping. Most groups sites have 50 members, anyway.

$x='print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x; ';
print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x;

I work at Microsoft. I have nothing to do with Halo and nothing I say is "the official word".

There are certain types of groups where a filesharing system is almost required.

Ahh, i've seen it BTW, guardian told me about it, looks great.

*shuts up* yall weren't supposed to see that!

Anyways, a website is a very good idea. I mean, many groups have website, as a mattter of fact, i'm working on ODST Recon's site, and well its looking great.

On to the advantages. There is filesharing and hosting, and a downloads section, if you need one, and that can come very handy if your group is like...dedicated to modding. Not cheating, like offline modding. You would want to be able to share your files right? Also, you can pick and choose from awesome themes, and even build one yourself. You can also affiliate with other people's sites, and you can't really do that with bungie.net groups because you won't have a very open line of communication. Plus, groups don't have shoutboxes, and those are the coolest.

There is also one other very very important issue. Since Achronos made taht stupid annoying member deletion *waits for ninjas*, big groups have been getting hit hard by it, and well, they're losing activity. With a website, there is nothing of the sort. You can have 1,000,000 members and still run.

And you can get a website for about $30 a year, its really not expensive at all.

So yes, i like websites much more than the groups, because websites give you freedom, groups just suck.

P.S. Those groups that make websites with just a cool forum and stuff, thats worthless. A website isn'tjust a forum, you need content, otherwise nobody is going to go there. Bungie.net is one of the lucky few, and they have a huge jinourmous game to talk about, so yeah it works for them. But we don't need 15,000 websites to talk about the same thing. You need content.

BTW, Johnrap is this something for GIA?

Mr. Smiley probably has the best group/website combination I've seen.

Though it was a lot more effective with the old crapness.

BFO is probably the most Bungie oriented fansite I've seen.
Very Old Skool in design too...

Isn't BFO's design based on the old bungie.net?

It does look like some of the old archives of bungie.net now that you mention it.

It is, but right now it looks like a broken version of the old new bungie.net.

Or maybe it's my browser. Some things on it just look wrong and on top of each other.

I'm glad to hear that there is plenty of support and precedent for this. I guess it's just all part of Bungie taking over the world. Which, by the way, seems to be going splendidly.

Exactly, yes.

We've been working on our mission statement lately. And it's fairly focused and doable. Just not completely doable within the framework of a Bungie.net group. So, although we still consider ourselves a Bungie.net group. That's who we are. And there are no plans to change that. But we will likely need to supplement the group with website functionality to fulfill our mission.

Yeah, we are still a bungie group, the off site stuff will ensure we can continue growth, and attact new members amongst other things.
