I don't understand how I can nail someone with the Fuel Rod Cannon four times and they don't die when I get hit once by the thing and that's it. One time I rammed a guy with a warthog at least six times and he even flew through the air but didn't die. Are there mods out there or am I missing something? If there are, do the people using them actually have fun? Is there any way to be sure you're playing on a server with no mods?

That has to be attributed to the latency issues of the netcode. I've done the same thing with the Warthog without killing my opponent and it drives me mad! I'd check your ping in those servers when you suspect someone of using hacks before actually accusing them of such.

I have to admit...I'm on dial up...I try to sort the servers by ping so that I hopefully don't hurt the game too much. I hope I can get on broadband soon. Ive seen lots of posts about the code and now I understand why everyone's talking about it being bad. I don't accuse anyone of using hacks I just get suspicious when after four hits from a fuel rod cannon (at least 2 of them direct and 2 right under the feet...I actually fired about 6 times) they still don't die. Finally on about the 5th definite hit he died. When a fuel rod blast gets anywhere near me I'm dead. Hopefully if I get broadband things will be different.

I wonder how using a mod is even fun. Knowing you need a mod to be good. Where's the honor in that? = )

If I'm not mistaken, the mods will only work if the mod is hosted by the server. In other words, the person running the server needs to have the modded file in order for the mod to really work to it's potential. The clients won't be able to see this if they have a map that doesn't match the map run by the server. This has been a problem since the beginning because there wasn't any way for the server to authenticate files used by clients while playing on the server.

King Panzer: Mods. They use them all the time it sucks I always encounter modders

Just becuased you get owned by someone, doesn't mean they are cheating. Mods only work if the server is hosting the mod, which there are not that many of. The only known cheats/exploits are wallhacks and being able to see invisi guys, so it's probably lag or the guy had OS. Just like on Xbox there are very good players in Halo PC.

overshields never protected me that much. It happens a lot. Maybe I just stink! lol. It's probably lag. I need broadband. I need a raise.

i dont know who you are but when you malee someone over and over and over in the back of the head with a shot gun and shoot them inbetween malee attacks and you are right on their heels and they arent dying they are hacking i dont care what limited hacks you say are out there i know what i have seen and tested time and time again.

no way man, take it from me, i get accused of cheating, hax, running a mod or whatever, at least once a day and i am definately not...and the funny thing is im not even the best person i play with on a regular basis, there are people in my clan that get accused of cheating EVERY SERVER THEY GO IN, and i know first hand that they arent...and there are people better then them out there...

someone touched upon it perfectly, it all depends on ping and the server...if you have a higher ping, you have a higher amount of lag, and if a server is run on a slower connection it can also cause lag problems...lead jumping, so on and so forth...

as for hax, the only ones i know of are wall hacks and various mods that need the server itself to be running the mod to work...when you are firing at an enemy, make sure you hear the hit register, just because someone lights up it doesnt constitute a hit...fact is, if you dont hear anything, you missed...

dang...is there any way to avoid lag? I'm on dial up and I know that sucks. What are the best servers to get on? I just go through the multiplayer section of the game is there anywhere else that has a lot of fast servers?

oh yeah, what about what that other guy said about when you melee someone in the back of the head like three times and you're shooting him at the same time. a sound definitely registers when you do a melee and how could you miss at close range? Is really the coding and lag only? What's the secret to be able to take so many hits? or be so good that people accuse you of mods?

It's all because of lag. I don't doubt that he was meleeing someone in the back, but the game is played on the server and your client is predicting where people are. In some cases the client side prediction is off and you will see someone right in front of you when they may actually be 2 or 3 steps in front, especially if your ping is above 100. This also why you have to lead 2-3 MCs. Also listen for beeps, they seem be an accurate representation of hits.

People are not cheating. I've been accused several times and even banned from a few servers for alleged cheating and I can't stand cheaters.

Oh yea...sues2nd, dude that wasn't my quote.

Guess I'll try leading till I can get broadband. Thanks for the info Money man. The explanation of the lead problem helped. I figured on something like that...now it's confirmed. See you on the field!!

You can't "cheat" on Halo PC. Its impossible unelss your some super hacker who hacked into the Gamespy Master Server to do something and even then you still can't "cheat".

Heh, yeah, cheating does seem like an easy answer, and I wouldn't rule it out entirely, but think your situation out thoroughly. If this happens to you all the time, and you have yourself admitted to being on dial up, what seems like the more logical answer? That there are hundreds and thousands of people out there hacking just to piss you off because they've got nothing better to do - or there's just some lag in the game?

The problem with PC is that when somebody's really good and they smoke you, unlike with X-box LANs, you can't just lean over and tell them "nice kill". They're miles away, on their computer, and you don't even know 'em - so of course it'll seem like they cheated. But trust me, some of us are just really good (or at least pulled off a great move and you didn't see it comming), but I'm sure very few people cheat.

The whole reason I opened this post was to find out if people are cheating or not and what I can do if they are not. Lag makes a lot of sense. I'm sure some people are really good but I know that if I see myself nailing someone and they're not dropping it's either mods or lag. Since mods don't seem to be a big thing I'm choosing lag. Dang dial up!!!

There's no way to cheat using mods right now. Except for the 8X Pistol zoom, but that isn't very useful.
oh, one way people can cheat is by pressing Print Screen. Makes them lag. Lag is the primary factor in "cheating."

ok lets get this clear, mods can't be used online, only skins can. lemme explain.
when someone mods a game and joins a regular server, his game acts normal because the server hosting the game is normal, so yea, but they can use their own skins, which makes no difference, the only way people could use mods online is if they host thier own games, and yea, at that point, if suppose they have made their pistol to shoot rockets. you can do it too. but the only difference for you will be taht you won't see rockets coming out. so you'll have a great disadvantage. if u die instantly or other crazy stuff happens, its celar that the server is running a modded game, other than that its all good. and yea, i've been accused of hacking the game and whatnot when i play...

Atmar, very clear explanation. thanks! I know a bunch of people who experience what I experience (some even were on this thread) so it appears that it's just lag. Bottom line, get a fast connection on a good server and make sure you don't stink!!

HomerCIDEL is right. Mods don't work unless the server operator is hosting the mod. I tried once but found it boring and promptly deleted the mod. People who use mods just so they can win are newbs.

I don't know, I'd like to think it's lag, but sometimes I can't see how that can be. I'm on DSL and usually my ping is between 33 and 67. I can wipe the floor with the vast majority of my opponents, and there are generally a good few people who can take me down too... but some people I just can't kill. And it's not because they're good, I mean I can't kill them. I shoot them in the face point blank with a shotgun and somehow miss. Impossible. Hit them over the back of the head, shoot them, they turn around and punch me once I and I die (full health and shield). Totally impossible, I tried this with a friend and it took three melee attacks head on to kill him at full health and shields, not one, and the same for me. These people I believe are cheating for the simple fact that folks of equal ability on the same server die when I shoot them, but these players don't no matter how much punishment I dish out. Usually the only way I kill them is with a well-placed rocket or fuel rod, the rest of the time I can't touch them. So, I believe there are plenty of cheaters out there. I've met people better than I am... they dodge my shots, have a better aim, whatever. They don't pull off impossible maneuvers and avoid unavoidable shots. The only thing I can possibly think of besides cheating is Halo's netcode is way more considerate of people with pings over 100 than under, and works in their favor when up against very low ping players.

  • 04.14.2004 2:05 PM PDT

As a recreational modder, I can reiterate that it is impossible to gain much of an advantage with mods, certainly not in the ways that you're talking about. I think the only reason some people think cheating is possible is that they joined someone's private modded server and got shafted with 30 homing rockets out of a shotgun. I have been guilty of this once or twice because I wanted some live bodies for weapons testing, but I always told my opponents what was going on. But again, there is no way that this is going to happen on a standard public server.
