I'm wondering what causes this cause of BS then, if not modding of any type. The easy answer is to brush me off and say I probably stink online and that I'm venting here, but that's not the case. I play a lot and don't see this stuff much, but every now and then I come across some pretty incredible crap, and I have a hard time explaining how it can possibly happen. The only thing I can think of other than the aforementioned netcode theory is maybe somehow causing and taking advantage of lag spikes client side. I KNOW I've had the server side with my client when I've been lagging before and been hit with rockets that do no damage. For example in a game yesterday a rocket was fired, exploded, and seen to explode under my feet by both the guy firing it and myself. The screen flashed yellow, I fired back and killed him, and took no damage from the first rocket which hit me. Another game I was flying a Banshee on Blood Gulch and singlehandedly slaughtering the red team. I missed one, he got in a tank, fired, it hit me, exploded, but I again took no damage and took advantage of the situation to kill the tanker. Got cries of 'wtf', accused of cheating, and banned. Given something like this happens to me probably once out of every 30-40 games by complete accident, I think perhaps it might be possible to replicate this situation and give yourself a lag spike to get out of an otherwise fatal situation. It wouldn't work all the time, explaining why these people are still quite mortal, usually when caught by surprise with no time to react, but it could still work plenty of times to give a very perceptible edge. You can ask why would someone go to that kind of trouble, but I can only say look at the huge and thriving online cheating community UT once had. Some people get something out of it, though I don't know what.
