... I have a tendency to lose my passwords...

Is it possible that Cortana is the source of the obvious differences between the Chief's vanilla Mark 6 armor and the one he is sporting in the Halo 4 teaser?

It is not indicated by the trailer or by any of the promotional material how long it has been since the end of Halo 3 and since the Chief got in that cryotube. It could have been a couple years or it could be over a century. Who knows. What I'm wondering is if Cortana in all that huge amount of possible freetime might have decided to try to modify and upgrade the Master Chief's armor.

Is this a explanation for the thrusters that came from no where? No as it was clear that the Chief knew they were there and used them immediately. Indicating that that was a feature of the armor already present. At least in my opinion.

A conceptual redesign would be no problem for a Smart AI of Cortana's caliber but how would this be accomplished? I'm not sure about that. It would take some significant fabrication machines onboard to be able to manufacture even modified parts of a suit. I am operating under the assumption that the suit is modified and not a new suit. Maybe Nanotech? Does the UNSC even possess that kind of tech? And would it be on half a frigate?

I'm not sure but its something to think about. What's your opinion?

They might have possibly upgraded during the time he was in cryo. Either way, Halo 4 will be great story and gameplay-wise. Armor and character designs don't define the game.

It could be just an artistic change like between Halo 2 and Halo 3, but its a bit more radical this time and might have an answer this time beyond Artist A thought this looks better. Either way I'm excited about the game.

I'm going to say it's a simple matter of retcons and art style.

question everything...truth has no pedigree

I could definitely see a big ship like the Dawn having a machine shop, possibly with certain automated systems. If this was the case, Cortana could have easily made the Chief some upgrades (if she had the time).

From the condition of the ship it looks like she might have had quite a bit of time.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

How exactly could she have modified his armor given that he was in a confined space (no tools could fit in there to do modifications), the ship had no power, and she wasn't interfacing with his suit?

Big ship? The dawn was a FRIGATE...

I am a monument to all your sins

If you watch IGN rewind, you can see that parts of his armor appear broken off. that may be why he looks different.

Parts could be taken off and swapped? Does the ship have absolutely no power? There has to be emergency power, and they do have the back half of the ship which is usually where the powerplant would be. Again this is all speculation. I have no idea.

Okay whatever. Is there something that says a frigate doesn't have a machine shop?

Who would be taking off the parts and swapping them? Also, how would they be swapped (what would be the point of entering cryo if he was just going to be taken out of it so parts could be swapped - entering cryo is more of a "this is going to save my life" action as opposed to a "let's just do this for the sake of doing it" action)?

Edit: My mistake on that one part, the ship does seem to have power (lights are on in some points during the trailer and the cryo itself is probably working). How, I have no idea (but then again, theres fire burning freely in a ship with vented atmosphere we obviously don't need to make things realistic...)

That's because there isn't anything that says that (save for the reference on Halopedia citing the Halo 4 release trailer as a source...what a joke that website is).

Check my fileshare.

Well when I read the armor tooltips in Halo 3 and Reach I noticed that some hinted to M6 having thrusters with EVA being adjusted to do well even without thrusters. They're just for space anyway as they'd be too weak to work on an earth-like atmosphere.

Wasn't everything that was not essential shutdown to conserve power

It is a new artistic representation. Just like how it changed from Halo 2 to 3

People got upset over the slight changes to his gauntlets from Halo 2 to Halo 3 (Which I thought was hilarious). From the promotional pictures I've seen the armor is very different from what he wore in Halo 3. I'm just giving a possible explanation for it other than an artistic change.

Someone didn't read my original post. I decided 'the always there but never used theory' was the easiest explanation.

It has to be more than 3 years (Halo Legends -- Cortana starts to rage . Smart AI's only have a life span of 7 years(they think themselves to death after learning too much) unless they delete some memories.

Also if it were Centuries Cortana wouldn't exist due to life span.

My guess is that is is set 42 months after the destruction of the Ark in halo 3 and the entry of slip space

I'm of the opinion that Cortana has already been through the stage of Rampancy and is no longer under that gun. And being that the fiction fragments we've seen has a Chief free history up until 2600 something it has to at least be fifty years in the future at least.

  • 06.07.2011 6:23 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Maybe, it would definitely explain the noticeable difference. So I'd like to think so.

Best. Ship. Ever!

They could have just added the thrusters for the teaser, just to add some flash to it.

Also I only watched the trailer once so forgive me for this but I didn't really notice any changes int the armour, besides the thrusters of course.

What has changed exactly?

  • 06.07.2011 6:28 PM PDT

well the armor color difference could have just been the lighting, or after a few years the paint dulled or something.

but the thrusters were always there to stabalize the spartans in space combat
