Subject: A Halo 4 trailer analysis thread

The name's Ian, Game Designer at Whisper Game Studios, very off-and-on Bungie.net visitor and avid Bungie fan overall. Message me if you wish.

Okay, seeing as I haven't seen a true trailer analysis thread up on here yet, I thought I'd get one rolling so I'd have some investigative help like back in the old days. CI is nearly rotted to the ground and the 343i forums are too overloaded with spammers trying to still be the first to tell the world that Halo 4 is actually happening. Pointless. So I thought I'd bring it here. So here it goes.

We're all quite skeptical, I'm sure, about how this will fit into the chronology of the game we so wonderfully love. 343 has dropped the ball a couple times already on the development and advancement of the Halo universe's canon, yet at the same time, Cryptum is pretty awesome (a few months later and I'm still not done reading it haha.). This is 343's first shot at an official game, from scratch. This uses no old engine, this uses barely any assets given to them by Bungie, if assets were even given at all.

Let's all face it, whether you're a long time fan of the game period, have a pet peeve about the strict religious keepings of the chronology or are just interested in how this game will change our view on Halo period, we're all skeptical. No true decision on whether the game will be good or bad will obviously come until we see some true gameplay which most likely won't be until the VGA's, HaloFest or PAX (or all three). Halo 4 is the kinda game that us canon lovers are going to drool over while scratching our heads on how this is gonna work.

Well I can tell you now, Bungie got away with changing the armor just a tad from H2 to H3, but honestly this is quite a bit much.

Also, WHAT?!

Regarding the ship and the space around it, I'm pretty sure that last we left the spartan, we saw quite a unique nebula in the background. So where is it now?

And for the researching enjoyment of everyone out there (seeing as the copies I've found so far seem to be in quite low quality, this is in 720p) The Planet's portal like structure opening for some nom'ing.

All of these were taken by me earlier. I'm finding some nice pointers throughout the pics to find some interesting visual pieces that we can analyze a bit further for more accuracy, but so far this is all I have. Again, not too much action seems to be taken on analyzing except over at some underground forums, and even there I haven't seen much progress. Hoping the original Halo community can be quite more productive.

tl;dr : Halo 4 looks questionable so we're gonna analyze the hell outta the pics in the links above.

List of Points:
=========================
jediknightvetro- The pistol MC has is most likely a new weapon. It isn't an attachment, you can tell because it flares after being shot, then is replaced by another grenade or other external attachment applied after being fired.

Sniffy66- Jetpack may suggest more spacial combat/gameplay either in campaign, multiplayer, both, etc.

(The above points are paraphrased and rewritten for more accuracy and clearer presentation of points.)

Yo bro, what's good?

Another thing I want to add, the pistol MC picks up is a new weapon for the record. It isn't an attachment, you can tell because it flares after being shot, and then he screws a new grenade-type projectile on after shooting the first one once he stops flying around in his jet pack.

Good point. I'll probably make a list of points people have made throughout to keep repetition down.

Am I the only one who thinks the jetpack may mean there will be zero gravity combat? Just like a hint or something?

It still has no reason to be there canonically. That's my highest concern. Anyone can get away with a "just because" but Halo hasn't done such a thing so for it to start now is preposterous.

In the IGN interview Frankie has said there is a reason why John looks like that.

But maybe he always had a jetpack and we never knew.

I'd be so disappoint.

sorry, but most of that was pretty obvious or already been said a million times.

about the nebula in the background. Honestly i don't think AT ALL that this is the same thing we saw in the end of H3.
now compare the two:
Halo 3 legendary ending planet
Halo 4 trailer thing
I'm I the only one who doesn't see similarity's?

the only possible way that they are the same is it is a small part of the planet but then the sizes of the FuD wouldn't match up.

actually you might be able to see that it isn't actually a sun in the H3 ending and it's actually the light, but i dont't see that lighting up the whole planet.

anyways the real question we should be asking is why is the FuD blowing up?

You'd laugh at what's been primarily addressed. A lot of what I said, most people haven't even taken into consideration. The most significant thing I've heard stated externally is that there's an extra door by the cryo chamber that wasn't there in H3. Also, Frankie said it's the same Legendary planet in an interview shortly after the reveal. No debating that one. Not to mention it's quite obvious seeing the structures and symbols on it.

here is my analysis of the entire trailer.sorry i am not the best of writers.
1.
The first half of the teaser, it shows smoke, and then slowly converts to a "xray" view of MC's body being revived from cyro, bodily shapes can be seen to include a heart, and bones. the smoke sequence was just to long to be "only" a lead up to the actual teaser, something must be hidden in it.

2
Weapons, thier has only been a single weapon seen thus far, It appears to be a m7 styled grenade launcher where the grenade is externally mounted to a rod on a pistol style launcher, it features a cocking mechanism similar to single shot break loaders, where the slide becomes removed from the frame and must be repositioned before being fire again, this could mean that the externally mounted grenade is set off by a hydraulic, air pressure system that is achieves by cocking the weapon.
Also, when the grenade launcher is picked up, what looks to be other handgun-sized weapons are seen floating at the top of teh screen, these are possibly pistols of the m6 series.

3.
Enviroment/scenory.
First off, the ship size has significantly changed, as well as shape, it no longer bears a resemblance to the butt end of a unsc frigate. And has also been significantly reduced in overall size. There has also been some sort re-establishment of basic atmosphere, as fire can be seen raging and standing, which in vacuum is not possible without a oxygen source,(or self oxidizing fire like gunpowder) there is also snow, which can only be caused in atmosphere, outside of the atmostphere co2 ice can form, but is very rare because their isn't enough external pressure to cause water molecules to actually remain in a "solid"state. Additionally, their is a large amount of snow present, which could be a indication of how much time has passed.(as ice flakes and snow in space is very rare because it still requires the molecules to come together through the huge void that is space.

4.
the little things.
Cortana is coherent, and apparently not yet crazy, which could either be a indication that 5-6 years has yet to pass. or could simply mean she staved off rampancy somehow (or is in fact rampant) John's armour is first seen usings not a jetpack (as the amount of thrust in a zero gravity enviroment was minimal) but rather some form a "next-gen EVA tech", or "Null gravity assist package", something that was mentioned in the halsey journal.(null gravity assist package or next-gen EVA technology are both mentions as features of the mark 6 armour)
Obvious changes were made to MC's armour look. The m6 rifle mc secures before going into cyro is no where to be seen.

Been on the forums since July 2008.

If you're reading this, I'm probably better than you in Halo 3 and Halo: Reach.

Just so everybody knows, that wasn't a Jetpack. It was a Thruster built into Chief's MJOLNIR armor. It's used in Zero-G environments to get around quickly. Rewatch the trailer and you'll see the pair of thrusters pop out of his armor where his shoulder blades are.

It's not a Jetpack people.

It does sound exactly like the jetpack, however.

Signatures are for squares.

How does "this has nothing to do with the actual game and is just a CGI trailer to let everyone know the game exists, and the chief is in it." work for an analysis?

Seriously, don't bother looking at the minor details. The first trailer is NEVER canon.

of course it does, i mean it is easier to take non specific parts from previous games, expecially ones that quality translates well, (like audio bits) and add them to teasers because it cuts back on costs.

people need to stop thinking the trailer is the real opening cutscene for halo 4...
Of course MC isn't just going to pop out the bed like that fully equipped with all that new -blam!-

it is true, i doubt that scene will be exactly in h4 exactly how it is now, but it can still and should still be used to help decipher what halo 4 may bring, plus they even tell us, they have hidden things in the teaser if we pay close attention.

  • 06.07.2011 10:17 PM PDT

"I'm a 40 in Team Spelling, but I have the most worstest time leveling up in Team Superlatives."

I think I figured it out...THIS is what the Chief is floating towards!!!

  • 06.07.2011 10:18 PM PDT

For starters, folks, when comparing the legendary ending of halo 3 and the new halo 4 trailer, time is an issue. If the planet is similar to the UFO like thing, then this is how it would work: "Wake me, if you need me." Twenty seconds later, "CHIEF I NEED YOU!" That makes no sense to me. Perhaps tons of time passed, which is a more plausible conclusion.

If tons of time passed, then the two objects are not the same. Period.

So the question is, which one is it???

yeah it tells us he has a thruster pack thing and an awesome pistol... and the Dawn is heading for the Legendary planet... that's all. I think the "waking up" sequence might be the same in the game though

It might not be canon however that doesn't mean it won't show things that are in the game. I remember in the IGN interview the interviewer asked about the armor and Frankie said there IS a reason why it is different.
