They did this completely wrong.
Why do I say this? Because successful companies have AVOIDED what 343i is doing, and are very successful.
There is nothing with dividing the player base. CoD has players stretching from Black Ops, MW2, WaW, CoD4, and even CoD3.
There is nothing wrong with diversification. It allows for players to play with what they want, and to not try to make them assimilate. It's entertainment, give the fans what they want.
Perfect Dark was remade from the N64. Remade with online multi-player. Halo:CE was on a system that ACTUALLY had an online component, I mean online tunneling for the original CE was even done years ago. And a minor company 4J studios was able to revive a game from such a primitive piece of tech (N64), it's actually mind boggling why they didn't just engineer a netcode for CE.
And the pistol is NOT OP. Maybe it's OP when you guys were playing with your little brothers or whatever, but pistol is not the main part of the game. Enjoy getting annihilated by rockets/OS/PR if you think so.
