Subject: My Suggestions - Bungie Developers Please Read

  • last post: 01.01.0001 12:00 AM PDT

I certainly hope that the Bungie developers or managers are reading this thread and taking some of these suggestions. I can't wait for Halo 2 Vista! Some of these suggestions have already been offered, and so I just want to affirm my support for them, and possibly throw in some new stuff:

1. The ability to connect to a server as a pure spectator would be great, with the ability to cycle through each player and have a rotating camera. The number of spectators per server would need to be limited, but I think a full 16 players + X spectators is reasonable since spectators consume less bandwidth. Watching a good game of Halo 2 would be more fun than watching some sporting events on TV! :)

2. A popup voting screen for kicking players or spectators that are disruptive, requiring only 51% of the players to vote in order for the kick to be enacted. The server should then prevent the player from reconnecting for the duration of the current map or perhaps several map cycles. It would be great if the voting screen also allowed players to vote for the next map to be played, including voting for an immediate map switch. The available maps which are eligible to be voted for would probably need to come from a playlist pre-selected by the admin since voting for individual server options would be too complicated. The voting screen should show the server options for each map in the playlist though.

3. Colored chat text to indicate whether text is Team Chat or All Chat.

4. Auto-kick for idle players and players whose average ping is over 300 for over 5 seconds.

5. Please please disable the ability of players to disconnect and quickly reconnect to a server through the console. This enables players to team kill as much as they want while avoiding the team killer autoban.

6. Online stat tracking for players would be awesome.

7. In the servers list, offer a popup window or side window to show all server settings at a glance instead of watching slow moving text at the bottom. Enable the ability to filter the list based on individual server settings.

8. Having a map editor will be great. I would hope and assume though, that when a custom map is installed on a server, that the players would be able to automatically download that map and relevant files from the server and not have to manually download and install the files. If the process is manual, it will dramatically squash the popularity of custom maps. Perhaps this feature is already in Halo CE. I never installed it because I didn't like the hassle of having to use a separate client. The server should also be able to redirect the players to a separate high speed web or FTP server for downloading the map files.

9. Players names should appear above their heads if your crosshair hits their bounding box, not necessarily perfectly on their geometry. The names should also appear instantly rather than fading in.

10. Web browser based server administration.

11. I'm concerned that the voice chat feature might create unacceptable lag in the gameplay. I think administrators should have the ability to globally disable voice chat on the server if they choose.

12. I have not played Halo 2 on X-Box so I don't know what it is like, but underwater vehicle or swimming scenarios would be fun.

13. Multiplayer maps with secret areas would be great, such as sniper perches that require finding a secret door or invisible teleporter to enter, or having illusionary walls that can be walked through and shot through, and look solid from one side, but can be seen through from the other side.

14. Elevators and Lifts in multiplayer.

15. Traps or doors on the map that can be triggered by a button or control panel on the map, such as a drawbridge or trapdoor or crusher that can be triggered to crush enemies or drop them to their deaths. Doors that require the enemy to gain access to the control for the door in order to open the door and allow teammates into the enemy base to get the flag.

16. Teleporters that can be seen through, shot through, and driven through.

17. Jump pads that safely hurl a player or vehicle over a long distance. Jump boots for high jumping would also be nice.

18. Some sort of flying jet backpack.

19. Some piece of equipment for climbing up steep walls or onto ceilings.

20. Flying vehicles with additional passenger and gunner positions. A tank with an extra gun to be manned by a 2nd player.

I realize that suggestions 12 through 20 may be too far of a departure from the precedent already set by Halo 2 on the X-Box, but nonetheless these are elements that are tremendously popular in other first person shooter games such as Unreal Tournament, and I think they would add very exciting dynamics to the Halo universe, especially multiplayer.

In my opinion, Bungie really needs to look at the features of the original Unreal Tournament game (some of the UT sequels were not so great) if they want inspiration for features for Halo 2 Vista or any other FPS game they intend to produce in the future. With the exception of a lack of vehicles, the original Unreal Tournament and its engine still has my vote for the most compelling FPS experience ever offered.

Thanks for reading!

I really hope they put this one in... I think that when a player gets a Killtacular or gets on a Killing Spree or Rampage, that all the players on the server should be notified of this via text in a different color. This is great for the brag factor, but also alerts everyone to who may be camping so that multiple people will gang up and go kill him. :) I also think that there should be a few more levels like (for multikills) Mega-Kill or Kill-Rageous etc, and (for sprees) Unstoppable or Godlike etc.

Halo 2 is entering a very copeteyiv market. Fact is, many PC gamers are convinced that halo 2 is inferior to any other PC game (ough I totally disagree.) I That said, It will probably be neccesary to add a sufficient amount of new stuff to overcome peopel's preconceptions.

1) Atleast 4 new weapons. Maybe a second kind of SMG. Maybe another covenant weapon.

Try to make them tactically intersting.
2) Atleast 4 new vehicles. Maybe a boat.
3) The ability to lean so we can fire around corners
4) A quicksave option in SP.
5) Something to maintain texture quality at close ranges
6) Voting
7) Friends list and server favorites list
8) Don't make it like Halo 2 where every time you wanna play MP, you have to wait up to 30 seconds while the game looks for updates. Users should be able to upgrade at their discretion.
9) Try to work out some of the imbalances with the sword.
10) Upgrade the physics

I think variable weather conditions on the multiplayer maps would be a nice touch, such as certain maps having rainfall and thunder and having some maps set at night.

That should be a game setting, you can MAKE a map set at night. So many times I've wanted to do Blood Gulch at night. That would rock.

Remember, kiddies! It's a port, they're not freaking remaking the game! So, sorry, but your chances of having dual-wielded swords and the ability to drive scarabs is highly unlikely!

Heh, we already do that in HCE.

The cycle idea sounds interesting, but as Kim as said, they obviously won't implement it. I wonder how hard it would be to implement something like that as well...

Whoa, whoa. Slow down there, dude. Before you proceed to post any more replies, pass English for third grade, okay?

For numbers past one hundred with the exception of dates, you type them in numbers. So you would type 2006, not "two thousand and SIX." Also, my friend, it's just pronounced two thousand six, not two thousand and six. Just saying there, I don't mean to be a perfectionist.

By the way, Wikipedia isn't perfect. I use it frequently and find most of its information reliable, but when people start or edit articles, their research (or lack there of) may not be reliable or accurate. Even so, I just checked out the Wikipedia article on Windows Vista, and nowhere in it did I see anything saying that the release date was October 11th, 2006.

Rocket hogs!

I would absolutely love the return of the beloved rocket hog into H2 Vista, but I'm worried Bungie won't put it in. After all, we already have an anti-armor vehicle, the Gauss warthog. Not to mention, this would spawn about five million threads in the Maw from annoying five year olds with topic titles such as, "Poll: wut is ur favorit kiend of hog gaus, rokt, or chaingun!?!??!?!?!?!?"

I third the rocket hog motion.
Also, it would be really REALLY nice if you guys (bungie) could trim the hitboxes so when h2v releases fans don't get inclined to do a high-res version of halo 2 is noobified.

You can't stop people from abusing a certain weapon over and over again. Besides, have you ever tried to consistently get kills while manning the rocket gun? The recoil is huge and it's very inaccurate.

I think that heavy weapons are great, and they take skill at long distances. But if all you do is kill people on foot at close-range with rocket launchers, then you should uninstall the game.

The sword should have limited use, like in SP. Sword whores FTL!

  • last post: 01.01.0001 12:00 AM PDT

For those that bashed some of my earlier Unreal Tournament type suggestions, I acknowledged at the bottom of that post that some of those were unlikely to make it in. I only made mention of them because I wanted to hopefully make Bungie aware of some of the excellent elements in other FPS games that they could have put in, and hopefully they'll either put them into Halo 3 or some future FPS game they create.

As for my Halo 2 Vista suggestion for this post, I went to the Halo 2 web page (not Halo 2 Vista) so I could view some of the promo videos from when Halo 2 released on the X-Box. One thing that disappointed me a bit was the fact that the aliens were speaking English in the videos. If the game explains this as being accomplished with some sort of Universal Translator, I suppose I'd be okay with it, but I'd prefer to have the aliens speaking in an alien tongue and have it subtitled at the bottom of the screen. For me that just makes it seem more real and believable.
