Since Halo 2 is going to be on Windows Vista, it will most likely use DirectX10. Will we be able to play it with our DX9 cards, or will we have to upgrade?

No you don't have to upgrade to Windows Vista. Simply because after I get through with Bill Gate$, he'll be begging to make it for XP.

The 7800 GTX is a DX9 card. Halo 2=DX10.

It will probably be the same as Halo PC is now. You can run it on older cards but it will not be as pretty. The older cards will not be able to use the newer shaders etc., but the game will run. They would be in trouble if it didn't.

True, if we had to get $300 DX10 video cards to play Halo 2, Bungie would sell about 5 copies.

Windows vista is only dx10 isn't it? Maybe its just dx. I heard something about that anyway. If they do that, people will be a little pissed. I'm sure there will be dx9 support, don't know about lower.

Bottom line: we're all happy about it. The sticky Sketch made is even gone. Bad part: yes, only it'll be out later.

DX10 is probably not a necessity as people are running the beta on DX9, however, a PCI-E graphics card is a necessity as windows vista uses graphics cards rather than onboard graphics as xp and below did, and agp doesnt have the bandwidth for games + windows, so pcie is a must.

but that means everybody will have to buy new computers that have PCI-E support. I have a computer that i built last year and it dosnt have PCI-E support. I have a new RADEON-9600 All in wonder, and now i have to buy a new computer just to play H2 for pc. That sucks.

It will be both DX10 and DX9 capable.....

If vista were only DX10 capable, that means that if you want it (which microsoft sooner or later will make almost mandatory because all the new stuff will be out for it), you will have to buy a new videocard. SInce most people who have computers wouldnt know how to install one, let alone open their computer up, theyd have to buy a new one. MS is much smarter than that.

ummm no? pci-e has dropped alot in price, and hte 7800's can be found for around $300.

Yea lets go back to the past.....PCI-e is newer technology, and AGP is beginning to fade out. Just like how intel is getting rid of pentium 4 and making duo's. Also the new AMD m2 sockets will be out sometime soon.

Its newer technology, its faster, and better.

Heyyo,

Whoa whoa whoa! This thread's lost its mind. I'll set you guys straight.

Think of it this way, m$ wants profits. They can't make an os only for dx10 cards, or else no businesses would buy it, and I'd say businesses probably make up for 65% of their os's budget.

For windows vista, I'm sure all you'd need is a geforce 4 mx440 or an ati radeon 7200. Anything higher and m$'s profit margin would be quite minimal.

Think of it this way, if your hardware don't support it, it can be supported software-wise.. I'd just run really horrible is all. That's why, for insance, if I play fear and turn on soft shadows it runs like crap cause it needs PS3.0.

AGP does not outperform PCIE, every pcie version of a card is superior to it's agp cousin because there will be no bottlenecks when it's under load, as AGP did mightily often. And just so you know, the GT versions are superior to the GS versions, which usually lack a number of pixel pipelines, but have a very mild overclock instead.

I'm actually surprised how few americans have PCI-E, every single manufactured PC (dell, compaq, hp etc.) sold in the UK for the last year has been PCI-E equipped, it's been more than 18 months since nvidia and ati started to phase out agp, i really don't know why you don't just upgrade, it's not all that expensive. You all seem to be thinking you'll be needing 7800GTs or the like, any card that has DX9 hardware (6600 or above or x850/x800gto or above) will run vista perfectly well, and even if you don't have the graphics capability, Vista will have the ability to roll-back onto the old XP style graphics and use onboard video instead.

This is why you are better off buying an XBOX with Halo 2. Plus it isnt very good anyway, Halo CE is much better.

thats why AGP outpreforms PCIe right, and the 7800gt which is about $300, isnt anywhere close to the prefromance that you would get out of the GS, or the GTX

yea agp does out preform pci-e.......lol

PCI express is 2 times faster than agp. PCI-e's transfer rate is 16x, while agp is 4x/8x. So that means depending on the agp card, pci-e is either 4 or 2 times faster.

Now the card itself may not be faster, but the transfer rate is, which will give you some extra fps. Until the next gen of intel and amd's come out, pci-e wont be a huge difference.
