Did you ever think that Windows Vista code and Windows XP code might not be compatible?
It might take too much work for Microsoft and Bungie to make it compatible with both.
It would probably be two different games because of the coding, and they probably wouldn't be compatible.

The only reason I can possibly think of why Halo2 wont work on WindowsXP is that Microsoft doesnt want it to run on WindowsXP. There is no other reason besides this.

- It is NOT because Vista offers anything new
- It is NOT because Vista is better for games
- It is NOT because Vista has a different version of Windows Explorer
- It is NOT because Vista has a new card game

The only reason why it wont work is because Microsoft doesnt want it to. Forcing it to run on Vista wont make it a better game - there is nothing in Vista that XP doesnt or couldnt have that would be of any use to a game.

DX10 is the only "new" think in vista that a game would use which probably wont be available for XP. There is nothing stopping Halo2 from supporting DX10 AND DX9. Many games support DX7, 8 and 9 so there is NO reason why Halo2 couldnt support DX9 and 10 without loosing any new features, etc.

In conclusion:
The only thing stopping Halo2 from being able to be run on XP is Microsoft.

Come on man, even I know that's not true. XP's based on the Windows NT structure, while Vista will be bringing something completely different to the table. It's pretty similar to the switch from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X - OS X applications just don't run under OS 9, and OS 9 apps can only run in OS X under emulation. Posts like yours are just sour grapes and deliberate ignorance.

I agree that it would be hard to design the game to work on completely different platforms, and so far I dont really trust Microsoft's "backwards compatibility". Most xbox games on 360 has many issues (albeit them small), and Im sure that those faults would only be magnified on PC.
Also, dont get in a fuss over a OS X version of H2. It wont happen for a very long time. If Microsoft is using this title to push Vista on gamers, why would they launch it on a Mac? Oh, and to the guy who said Macs arent good for games, WRONG!

I really do feel sorry for people working at Bungie to wake up one morning to find out that not only had their company lost all their professional integrity, but also decided to alienate almost every Halo PC fan they have. We've already had a hard time with the mess you made of the Halo netcode in the 1.0.5 patch, and now you do this to us!

There is absolutly no technical reason why a game would run better on Vista, all games are based on either DirectX or OpenGL libraires which are available on all Windows OS's above Windows 2000. The only thing we can conclude that the decision to bring out Halo 2 on Vista only is a purely business & marketing decision. You'll have to implement so serious security to prevent it working perfectly on XP, I'd say you're going to have a torrid time from hackers try to maintain it running only on Vista

The most astonishing part of this whole decision is that you are limiting your audience by over 99% with you targeting such a specific minority. I thought you were in the business of making money, or is Halo 2 a pet project that you don't care if it break even on or not?

I agree with most of the comments here that Halo 2 while was a great game when it came out you've completly lost your oppertiunity to get people interested in a version for the PC. Halo 2 is now an old game and there are many superior PC games available to it now, I had fun with Halo 2 in the past but have moved on like most Halo 2 players (i tried playing it on the XBOX360 a few days ago and there wern't enough people on it for a game to start)

I still like playing Halo on the PC it's still a fine game and they community are great. Seeing your reasons for Halo 2 on Vista leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth and hasn't done my respect for Bungie any favours (Sell-outs is not strong enough!)

As a MSDN subscriber I'll be getting Vista automatically, but I can't say I'm all that interested in Halo 2 with the kick in the teeth ye have done to the Halo community. Thing is that most people avoid a new Microsoft O.S. until they have at least released SP1 (some people would say SP2) so the intiial take up on Vista won't be huge (OEM pre-installs may be an exception) as it takes time to iron out all the bugs.

A really sad sad day for all PC gamers.

I'm pretty sure that, after 11 years of having that charge leveled at them, Bungie has kind of learned to shrug off the ephithet "sell-outs" by now.

And look where all this "selling out" has got them; I mean, they're only immediately recognisable as one of the world's top game developers who continue to make excellent products, and still hold true to their founding principles (which is kind of, you know, the opposite of selling out).

Oh well.

This apple is brown, and rotten. This orange on the other hand, is in relatively average shape. So the orange is definitely the preferable option.
----------You can't compare apples and oranges. You're so dumb.

I am for sure not geting halo 2 vista although I would want to but I am not buying a new pc and vista so I can play a game I already have. I would enjoy map making but I am not falling into microsofts money making scheme.

This has me pretty pissed too. I know that "IF" Windows Vista works as well as its supposed to, then Halo 2 would run better on it. But making it just for Vista is not going to win over anybody but people with deep pockets that could buy two or three versions of the same game without a second thought. If it can run rather well on the Xbox, then It could run perfectly fine on XP. The Xbox is a specialized PC that has none of the benefits of Vista.

If games and software designed for XP won't work on Vista, then there will be a LOT of pissed off people. And if Vista is backwords compatible, then they should just make Halo 2 for XP and tweak it to run a little better on Vista. The only way that this would be necesarry is if they remake higher poly models and higher res textures for the entire game which is not going to happen.

1. Can all people arguing about macs and PCs stop? I have strong opinions about which is better, but its not the place for it.

2. There is little technical need why Halo2 has to be for Vista other than DX10, which sounds a bit suspect to me. As I have said in another post, Id like to see the good technical reasons why its not being made for the most popular, most stable version of windows out there.

3. Why do I have to upgrade my perfectly good and stable OS to play a new game?

4. There is little reason for most people to change to Vista anyways when XP seems to be cutting it for most.

5. Even making 2 versions, 1 for Vista one for XP will still reap a profit. I think its going to be obvious to everyone that if the 2 versions were released, then the XP one would bring in the most.

6. I as well as others I know, will not be playing (and therefore not buying) halo2 for PC as its Vista only. Dispite really wanting to continue the campain from halo1.

7. The reason given in the FAQs are awful and vauge. And insulting to anyone with intelligence.

From the front page hype about windows Vista:
* It seamlessly connects you to information, people, and devices you care most about, to help you get the most out of life and explore new possibilities.

Are they serious?

* It enables a new level of confidence in the security and reliability of your PC and in your ability to get the most out of it.

Hopefully its going to be more secure, if so, then the first and only valid point.

* It introduces clear ways to find, organize and use your information to focus on what matters to you, whether it's music, the Web or e-mail.

Err, I can find all my music easy enough, same as everything else.

Please bungie, dont ram this marketing stuff down our throats, give us some credit, you know some of us are smarter than that.

Everyone needs to relax. The decision to make it for Vista was made by the design engeneers. M$ marketing department may have something different to say about it before the games is finished. But do feel free to let them know that you do not like the idea.

Mo$t of you people who are $upporting Micro$oft are idiots come on it's obvioulsy for the money nothing else. I mean xbox is what like 5 years old or something halo 2 was made for something that was made like 5 years ago. So then that should mean that you don't need a freaking new os just to play halo 2 on your pc. It should be the other way around because they optimized the game to look good on xbox that was made like 5 years ago so they should optimize it to play on a pc that was made 5 years ago(well maybe not but whatever).
