Subject: What's with the new design for Chiefs armor in Halo 4?

Our big green style, cannot be defeated!
-Sgt. A.J. Johnson - Halo 2 - Metropolis

I'm getting tired of things being changed. His armor looks like butt now. He goes into cryo sleep in Halo 3, then tiny elves give him a jet pack & some weird new armor. What the hell? Cortana looks like Serena, & that game is called Halo, only, it doesn't have anything to do with Halos. His helmet in the CGI trailer doesn't even look like Mark VI. His armor is all straight & boxy. 343 & the changes they're making are -blam!-.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

Frankie has stated that there will be a canonical explanation for this all. Also, it's not a jetpack, it's an EVA thrusters pack in the back plates of his armour.

I might also add that this is just a CGI trailer. It is not a representation of what is actually going to happen in the final game, it's a teaser designed to be exciting and set the tone for the game. Use your brain, the Halo 3 CGI trailer wasn't a part of Halo 3; neither was Reach's.

There's something called overreacting, it's what you're doing right now.

How am I overreacting? Can you hear the tone of my thoughts as I type? So first of all, I know that aspects of the CGI will not be in the game. So don't think you're smart for saying what everybody knows. Second, they wouldn't have some aspects in the CGI trailer if it wouldn't be in the game. Third, there can be no canonical explanation because the books clearly states that the back portion of his suit is the power core. It also explains that every time the Spartans went on space missions, they would "take" the thruster packs. Even though they were wearing armor. So obviously, the thrusters were separate. You and your ignorant self. Read a book please.

It is a contradiction to attempt an "insult" on someone, trying to prove a point, and makes you out as someone who should be hated and in turn insulted, especially by which you've tried to degrade, and takes away the original meaning of a discussion forum. If you wish to have a real, true, fair, and meaningful discussion in the forums (which of course is the true purpose of said forum) then you are in the right, otherwise you have no purpose here. It is sad and degrading that such a large portion of this site has become of this very thing.

Mark 5=/=Mark 6
It is very posible they added the thrusters in the mark 6 suit.

Everytime someone sacks my groceries, I think of Loaf.

It's just a canon adjustment. It's still Mark VI.

Now Cortana on the other hand......

HALO 3: ODST had nothing to do with halos.
HALO: Reach had nothing to do with halos.

Just because it has the word "halo" in it doesn't mean it automatically has to involve halo ringweapons.

Also, CGI teaser trailers often have very little impact on the actual final product. There's no need to speed up your carpal tunnel by furiously typing a rant.

If people don't overreact early, we get games like Reach. Even if the trailer has no meaning, it's still stupid of 343 to give him new armor.

Old GTs; RebelRobot, Flamedude

I'm surprised they changed his armour so much, I can really see that it is different. Change is good, but I cant help but feel that change is only good if it makes sense and makes an improvement.

What so some how he was stripped of his Mjolnir in Cryo?

I'm not buying that explanation.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

That isn't something you tell ajw to do. You do not realize the forces you are dealing with.

halo reach: the halo are what they glassed reach with.

halo odst: the halo is what they glassed New Mombasa with.

...

What?

  • 06.09.2011 4:59 PM PDT

i have one theory that might work if it doesnt pls dont bite my head off
because of halo3 and reach we now know that there were many different armor systems developed for spartans and we also can say that the ship chief is on most likely has some kind of machine shop (to do minor repairs to ship parts)
my theory is that the ship chief is on might have been transporting a suit or parts of armor and that at some point before the new trailer part of chiefs armor malfuntioned cortana woke chief up and use the machine shop to make chief his new armor then chief goes back into cyro
for those who might say hows his armor going to break in cyro my answer is prolonged cold causing metal to crack
forgive my grammar spelling i cant write

It's a CGI Trailer, don't expect everything to be perfect. It won't have changed, unless Cortana got busy with him in Cyro. o.o

The armor changed due to the trailer using graphics that is different than the games. Hasn't anyone noticed in some games that get graphic improvements that the characters look different?

While I agree the jetpack is totally weird, however its quite possible he had it since the begining. Its probably a short time use for in emergencies, that would explain that he couldn't use it in any of the games.

  • 06.09.2011 5:13 PM PDT

don't understand why we are even discussing this. things were always going to change, things evolve, why aren't we complaining that his armour in Halo I didn't look anything like the armour in Halo 3 for example? because it was all low resolution and low poly, its the exact same thing now. the Halo universe has moved on a bit since Halo 3, new things have been incorporated into the universe. also this is 343 Industries, not Bungie, maybe they want to add their own creative flare to these sorts of things rather than just 'clone' the work Bungie have done!

to be honest I personally prefer the new look of the armour, it looks a lot bulkier, which is what I always thought MJOLNIR would look like. give 343 a break, let them try to breathe some new life into the franchise and we'll discuss it when its a reality, when we see what changes they make?

"Derpdy derp, read through Ghosts of Onyx once, time to go to Universe forums cos I'm now god of canon"

OT: Don't take this trailer into canon. They're simply showing off some gameplay changes to get people hyped, nothing more, nothing less. They'll explain things further down the line, at the point in the game the chief really does get a new suit.

Don't panic, they're not stupid enough to try and explain his sudden change in-game. Things just don't work that way.

  • 06.09.2011 5:21 PM PDT

Wow, just wow!

If Frankey says that there is a reason for the armor, I believe him. It's probably as simple as Cortana waking Chief up because she found some MJOLNIR armor plates in storage to replace Chief's busted up ones.

And who knows? Maybe those plates were specified for specific purposes. Maybe his chest piece is designed for EVA and includes the thrusters. They do have armor for specific purposes.

Major C.B.

I hope you all realize this CGI trailer was simply meant to set the stage and add some context to the backstory of Halo 4. Frankie has said quite some time has passed between Halo 3 and Halo 4, and that the CGI trailer isn't a direct representation of exactly where the game starts off. In other words, Master Chief probably was rescued, brought back to function, and upgraded many years later. Hell, Halsey and the others evidently somehow made it back from Onyx, judging by her postgame commentary in Reach. It thus makes complete sense that the MJOLNIR project would see continued improvements following that, and that Master Chief would receive these upgrades when he is found in space.

Further, it's not completely absurd to make the connection that MJOLNIR Mk. Whatever does not completely resemble Mk. VI, which Frankie has said Chief has been upgraded from. And if we're right on the date Reach ends on (I believe July 7, 2589 or somewhere around there) it's not hard to believe EVA thrusters would be integrated.

tl;dr The trailer may show Master Chief's awakening, but it's just for interpretive purpose. The trailer was meant to showcase new features (guns, armor) and set a very tentative stage for the direction of the game's narrative. Note: This is NOT the game's opening cutscene. Please stop taking it as such.

"Oh no, his armor is different! It isn't canonical, the entire game is ruined! 343 sucks!"

People take these things way too seriously...

You all sound like a bunch of little girls gossiping about how someone's dress looked. Seriously.

Uh Halsey is most likely still on Onyx. Her speach at the end of Reach is just that, a speach
