It's not a confirmed source but that big write up posted by a user the other day that is supposedly written by some journalist that watched a video of Halo 4 stuff mentions that the UNSC and ONI have been active on this planet/ship/whatever for quite some time...which, in my opinion, is very lame.
If true, very lame indeed.
It basically spits in the face of the Halo 3 ending, in my opinion... We had Chief and Cortana floating in space, unaware of where they are. Cortana claims it could be months or even years before anyone picks up their beacon, and they just happen to float to a planet where ONI and the UNSC are active?
I'm sure 343 will have an explanation though, like this planet being so super top secret that even Cortana didn't know about it (and couldn't detect any nearby planets?), but, we'll have to wait until we have more details.
Cortona didn't know about ONYX...not to mention other things...
EDIT: And look, ONI sees SPARTANs as expendible, as is Cortona. They need them to fight, not to know, as they are more then willing to put a bullet in John's head if he gets in their way. Yes, he'll do some damage, but he's an expendable asset and beyond Combat he is worthless, they have their own people for other things.
Right, but look...at the end of Halo 3, Cortana and the Chief are FLOATING...not going full speed ahead with thrusters at maximum...they're FLOATING... How far away could this planet have been if they simply FLOATED to it? And Cortana couldn't detect it? The next question to ask is, "well, how long have they been floating?" C'mon...you'd have to be floating a VERY long time to have been so far away from a planet like this that Cortana couldn't detect it...I foresee 343 having some continuity issues in the future...
As for being expendable, no. Spartan IIs were not expendable, they were created as humanity's last hope with much more precise training and care put into them. Spartan III's were created to be expendable though....
