Subject: "I am a monument to all YOUR sins"

"The measure of a man is what he does with power"-Plato

A quote from Gravemind in Halo 2, it gets me thinking.

Didn't the Forerunners fight Humanity before?

In Cryptum we know that Humanity are running from the Flood. And this results in a huge war with the Forerunners.

Now, (theory time here) what if Humanity created the Flood and it went haywire and started destroying Humanity before they could launch a first strike on the Forerunners?

When Gravemind says "I am a monument to all your sins".

Maybe he's talking about humanity as a whole.

Imagine a triangle. It's perfect, but a little plain. You take a chisel, and carve a small decorative symbol into it to make it a little more interesting. People like it, but it could use a little more.

So you then take a sledgehammer..

Humans used "Flood Powder", not knowing what it was, on their pets, which in time created the Flood.

I think that's what Gravemind means.

The hell is Flood Powder?
Flood in powder form. Used it on pets and it made their behavior better I think. Then they started mutating and eating each other and eventually began eating humans.

So the Flood are nothing but a mutation of an ancient dog?

All of Halo lore is down to one incompetent guy in an intergalactic pet shop...........

Haha, it's a little bit more than that.

What striked me as odd is that retro-Humans found a cure to the flood.

That means there is a cure to the flood, and lols at the forerunner not being able to find one and creating Halo's instead.

So what were these Pheru like?

Dinosaurs?

  • 06.11.2011 3:06 PM PDT

precursors or what the hell were their name, they constructed the flood like a last ditch of effort if forerunners defeat them...
humans found a cure, they went to forerunner teritories, forerunners de-evolved them, before that could happen the humans destroyed all the cure data as revenge, grawemind says that because he heard that chief was a reclaimer(from guilty spark and the red eyed monitor who was capcured by the flood) (forerunners-human)
gravemind
thinks he is some kind of a forerunner...

So because forerunners attacked the precursors(by betrading their makers) they comited a sin...

So he says as to a forerunner
''i am a monument to all you'r sins'' he says that because he thinks that MC is a forerunner or somthing wery nearly him(witch he is because forerunner human dna is similar(i say because humans can activate forerunner instalations))

Everytime someone sacks my groceries, I think of Loaf.

Ok total mind -blam!- I was thinking about posting this today! I played Halo 3 recently after finishing Cryptum and when gravemind said that line, I was " No -blam!-ing way....."

Our ignorance for the use of the flood powder, screwed the galaxy.....

Touche for beating me to the post.

The Flood we fought wasn't what the Forerunners fough. While still dangerous, our Flood was more a classic space zombie virus with grave limitations and no apparent intelligent cohesion like the Gravemind. Overtime, they seem to have evolved

I like how it says first Flood outbreak in the MILKY WAY galaxy. They could be in other galaxies.

so basically before the flood got too dangerous they were feral mutant pets.

Think before you post

Oh, man. This is throwing me for a loop... That's so awesome how Cryptum twisted Gravemind's words onto itself. Clever.

Makes sense. Though it's hilarious how the Flood outbreak started. Space pets are dangerous.

Still have to read cryptum but reading this thread is goddamn hilarious XD.

I knew that humans stopped the flood before the Human-Forerunner war but never knew it all started with their on pets.

  • 06.11.2011 5:54 PM PDT

I think it's much more likely that he is talking about the Flood's relationship to the Forerunners and Humanity being their successors. Because remember he says later "I offer no forgiveness, a father's sins pass to his son" essentially making reference to Humanity being the successors of the Forerunners and in a sense their children.

And I highly doubt that Humanity created the Flood (well in a sense they did by using the powder the Flood originated from on the Pheru), especially since Cryptum said they found them in automated ships of a more ancient design that were practically falling apart too if I remember.

Our big green style, cannot be defeated!
-Sgt. A.J. Johnson - Halo 2 - Metropolis

I know Halo Legends isn't actually canon to the story, but I remember seeing in one of the episodes, the flood came from another galaxy & caught the Forerunners off guard, since they didn't know how to fight it. So I assume that the Gravemind means he's a monument to all their sins, as saying, "I'm here due to the failures of your ancestors". Something like that. Why is this an issue?

According to Cryptum,

Ancient Humans found a ancient ship that were drifting the space, most likely Precrusor ship and it is filled with containment of Flood powder containing the genetic materials. They tested powder on the pheru and it has significantly improved their behavior until something changed in genetic material and mutating the pherus to early Flood forms which it started to infect anything. It infected hundreds of human worlds, sparking the Human-Flood War and Humans found a cure by implementing a genetic material to 1/3th of its population to combat against the Flood and it worked. But it severely weakened the humans and forced them to fight Forerunners and lost the war and got de-evolved. For revenge, Humans released Flood to Forerunners and Forerunners got destroyed and their civilization collapsed.

There's theory that Flood is indeed creation by Precrusors as sort of revenge against the Forerunners for destroying their civilization.

Only problem, is that thje 2 theories conflict, but i go with cryptum, because it's a book, not a cartoon.

But Origins is seen through the point of view of Cortana, who may be rampant at that point in time. So anything seen in that episode may not be true.

  • 06.11.2011 8:23 PM PDT

in legends Cortana is telling about halo history the best she can with the data she has and the fact she seems to be going rampant she assumed that flood was from out of the galaxy she had no information that could tell her that the flood started with space pets

  • 06.11.2011 8:25 PM PDT

Yeah, didn't think about that.

Rampant is when they 'think themselves to death' i believe
It has something to do with, they start jumping to conclusions based on previous experiences.
