"its not the years, its the mileage"

Its been around four months since I played Halo 2. So, in a fit of nostalgia I popped it in my 360...it will say "reading disc" as normal but ultimately will not detect the Halo 2 disc...the drive shows empty with no prompt other than "eject tray".

Sure, there are some odd scratches on the disc, which prompted me to pull out my virgin limited edition disc and try that instead. Same deal, won't detect the disc. I took both discs into my other 360 and had the same problem. Frustrated, I dug out my original xbox, dusted it off and hooked it up, and it read and played both discs with zero problems. Wtf!?

Both of my 360's are the newer editions I bought late last fall. I've played Halo 2 on both of them. The only thing I can think that would have changed would have been the 360's annual software update.

Did I miss a memo somewhere? Any ideas why neither 360's will play Halo 2 anymore? Granted, Halo 2 is my least favorite in the franchise, but I am not amused.

Why does everyone hate Halo 2? Maybe its because its the worst game ever next to mario.

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

Does your 360 read other games?

Probably the infamous "Open Tray" problem, if you try to get it to start a couple times it should work after a bit.

MS introduced a new format called XGD3. It adds an extra gb of disc space, and flashes the drive's firmware.

Could be you're drive's laser. It might be dying. H2 works fine on my 3 360s.

EDIT: Software update changed the way the drive reads discs, or something. So, some games won't work. Though, they only said some of the newer games wouldn't work. You can get a free replacement if this is the case. Check this article out. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to play the original xbox games though.
Yeah I've got 2 360's that won't read disks. I tried to contact MS support but can't get through. The link myservice.xbox.com doesn't work, any other links?

Maybe the emulator isn't downloading? Make sure you have internet access.

I played a few weeks ago on my 360 and it was fine.

"its not the years, its the mileage"

What is the "infamous Open Tray problem"?

To recap, I have two newer Xbox 360s purchased this last fall. Four or five months ago I could play Halo 2 fine on both boxes. Both read all other discs fine and are connected to the internet. As I discovered the other day, neither box will detect my Halo 2 game discs anymore (I have two, one of which is new)...it just states "open tray" as if there is nothing in there. Both game discs work fine on my original xbox.

The only thing that has changed is the spring update. Reading your helpful responses and the linked article makes me think the software update must be the culprit. Although, if it supposedly affects so few xboxs its interesting that both of mine seem effected. I'm not sure how they would handle a box exchange since one of them is the Reach edition. Although, supposedly this problem wasn't caused by the new update. Right.

edit: I've also cleared my memory cache, no go. Following the xbox trouble shooter I removed my hard drives to see if either 360 would read the game disc then, no go. Wth, over?

Because of that article I wrote to MS about the reading problem and they said send it in, we'll fix it for the regular price, since the warranty had lapsed. 2 boxes down the tubes.

Also, type in 'My xbox 360 won't read disks' and see how many other people are griping. 6,000,000 hits

"its not the years, its the mileage"

So, I called them today, described the problem and the troubleshooting that I've done and yes, I do in fact have to send them both in to get fixed. Sigh. He assured me over the phone this issue is only affecting a small percentage of boxes but I have to question that after what I've been reading over the past couple days and now having two 360s suffer from it.

On the upside, the customer service bloke was very helpful and they are both still under warranty.

This is a Reach account that I created the day they announced his name in a bnet weekly update. Any stats regarding ODST or Halo 3 are irrelevant. Also, Halo CE master race. Halo 1 > other halo games > other games.

Account Status: Silver :(
