The days of games such as Halo 2/3 are over. At least until the market dies off which i see happening with prices of games increasing every year because of CoD. (Which is an average game at best. Cheap gimmicks and boring bland campaign/multiplayer is what the audience wants nowadays).
So you're stating that the majority of people want to play bland and boring games?
No, the reason why COD has become so successful is because it is so easy to pick up and play, even if you completely suck. Someone who has never played it before can go into matchmaking and still manage to get a good amount of kills. Most people don't want to play a game where they constantly get owned, and they don't want to have to invest a lot of time in getting better. They just want to go into a game and play it for fun.
It seems that Reach tried to find a medium between being accessible to newcomers and still retaining a Halo feel to it, and I think that this is why it hasn't been as successful as maybe Bungie hoped. It made the gameplay feel awkward. You can't mix water with oil. The Halo formula needed to stay basic.
Also the COD campaigns are actually quite good. Linear and repetitive, but a lot of polish.
