The Flood.
Everyone depicts them as some evil horde of monsters, yet they are just a species who is trying to survive, regardless if they were created by the Precursors. Is this not why the humans continued their war against the Covenant despite all odds... for survival?
No. There is a flaw in your argument.
Humanity were causing no harm to the Covenant before the war, nor was there any threat to the Covenant that Humanity was knowingly going to commit. Humanity was not responsible for the problems in the Covenant ideology, it is not their problem. Therefore there is no obligation on Humanity's part to the Covenant and they do not deserve punishment. The Covenant therefore had no real reason to attack Humanity other than to preserve a lie. Therefore Humanity had every right to protect its existence against this threat. They were in the right, the Covenant in the wrong.
The difference with the Flood is that their existence is a deliberate threat to other people. No one else is threatening the Flood, so there is no reason for them to do what they do based on self-defence. A similar situation would be this:
A man is in dire need of a heart transplant. If he does not receive this he will die. Is it acceptable for him to pay a bunch of rogue medical personal to abduct a perfectly healthy, innocent person off of the streets, rip out their heart (Thus killing them in the process) and implant that heart into the dieing rich man so that he can survive? I would not think so, because this is not the problem of that innocent person. They are not responsible for the rich man's condition. The same goes for the Flood. Others should not be made to suffer for your own problems.
