Recently with the remake to Combat Evolved, I've heard a lot of people talking crap about Halo: CE, while others talking bad about other games in the series they hated. I was going to include Halo Wars, but I didn't think it was necessary since it wasn't good and isn't an FPS. So, what do you think?

I'd also like to let everyone know, that I myself did not vote, that way the poll is less biased.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Halo: Reach, without question, was a complete and utter abomination that is a disgrace to Halo.

  • 06.14.2011 3:41 PM PDT

ODST had the worst story-line which is what I look forward to in a Halo game.

Imagine a triangle. It's perfect, but a little plain. You take a chisel, and carve a small decorative symbol into it to make it a little more interesting. People like it, but it could use a little more.

So you then take a sledgehammer..

I agree with your statements about Halo: CE, Reach, and Halo 2, but thats it. And even those only to a very small degree. CE had the best gameplay, best story, and most unflawed multiplayer. Halo 3 had great graphics, and good gameplay, but it was far from the best. It brought nothing new to the Halo experience. ODST was a good change of pace, and had good gameplay, along with the introduction of Firefight. Halo Wars doesn't count. Halo Reach only really has good multiplayer experience, but thats about it. It just wasn't the same as what we were used to from a Spartan. And Halo 2, while the multiplayer was -blam!- up by the BXR glitch, it took multiplayer gaming to a whole new level, not just because it was brought to Xbox Live, but because it tooks CE's already incredible multiplayer and gave it an upgrade.

Yes and no, but overall it just didn't feel like Halo. A big part of that being that the Spartans weren't really Spartans, they were just kind of pansied down.

You need a weapon?....You can find your own......

I can't vote. I love each and every game for different reasons: Halo 1 for the campaign and LAN parties, Halo 2 for my first xbox live multiplayer memories, Halo 3 for both campaign and awesome custom games online, ODST for the cool Mombassa streets free roam and semi-tactical gameplay, and Reach for the multiplayer innovation and always interesting credit system....sorry, I just can't choose.

However, if I had to choose which had the worst campaign....probably ODST and Halo 2. I was playing Halo 2 campaign on Legendary literally 15 minutes ago and just gave up; it's way too damn hard!! Those mother -blam!- jackal snipers get me every single time. Not to mention the piece of -blam!- SMG you get instead of the AR....As far as the experience itself though, Halo 2 is still a pretty cool campaign (lots of childhood memories).

I agree with your points. The Jackals you refer to, and their "pink beams of hate," the way to beat that part is to shoot them and then advance, because if you just sit there, they will spawn infinitely until you hit the next load zone.

Hell, everyone I know thinks Halo 3 was the worst, yet no one on here agrees with them. However, like you, I have different things I like about all 5 games.

Due to some e-mail dumbness, my GT is not the one listed on my profile. My GT is the same as my board name.

Halo 2, easy. It's not a bad game by any stretch, but if falls below the standard of the rest, methinks.

Even more so than Reach? Did you not like the gameplay, was it to hard for you, or did you just not like the story as much?

I'm mostly talking about the multiplayer, which was frustrating beyond belief with buttons combos and glitches. And that's not even touching upon the (well-known by now) massive aim-assist.

In terms of difficulty: Halo 2 isn't "too hard," but it is the wrong kind of hard. There's nothing interesting about facing enemy snipers that can headshot me from around a corner two miles away through a door. The only gameplay mechanic I didn't care for was dual-wielding; as much as I love the idea, it's implementation in Halo has always been underwhelming.

The gameplay beefs I mentioned above coupled with the wealth of information about things that were cut from the game, have always led me to be less satisfied with it than the others. I followed Halo 2's development pretty closely, and there were loads of things left on the cutting room floor. It's always just had this overall air of being unfinished to me, and that's got nothing to do with cliffhanger ending.

I'm not saying I don't like it. "Worst Halo Game" is like "Shortest Giant." It's story had a level of depth and complexity that H:CE didn't - neither is any better, but 2 was fresh in this regard. It had some truly stellar maps, and the soundtrack is second only because of ODST. Reach has it's fair share of problems. But most of the problems with Reach are by design, players themselves not liking choices made by Bungie. With H2, the problems feel like the game not being finished. I just find the former more respectable in that regard, I suppose.

That's what I look for in a Halo game and I thought ODST had one of the best storylines. I loved ODST.

Recon..??

I loved all the halos to a degree, but the most frustrating was Halo 2 and Reach.
3 and 1 had great gameplay and stories and halo 1 lan parties were the best! I have fond memories of Halo2 (not of its multiplayer though lol) but the campaign was fun...not on legendary, ugh. I didn't like how "closed environment" Halo 2 felt compared to 1.(dam invisible walls) and Dual weilding was pretty fun.
I still wonder what Halo 1 would have been like online (on the xbox, I had halo on pc, but we lost it)
and Reach had its good points, but it just didn't feel like halo.... the pansy spartans and the cheap armour abilities, compared to the useful utilities you had in 3. It COULD have been really great and fun.
and those stupidly overpowered elites. I also hated that you had to have TEAM SPECIFIC gameplay to have an elite, unlike H2 and H3.
as for odst, I liked the "free roaming" and revealed story, along with the weapons and firefight was really fun. Good times.
meh, I didnt play wars, it had good graphics and cutscenes, and it might have been fun as a first person tactical, similar to ODST (to me, some of the things in the story, as I read, don't make sense)

What was left out of Halo 2? What major elements? I know a lot about Halo, but I'm happy to learn what I don't.

Halo 2 did get a bit difficult on Legendary, mainly the Jackal snipers. As for Reach, I'm glad someone agrees that the Spartans were -blam!- in that game. And its always nice to find someone else who loved ODST as much as I do. I really don't know why ODST gets so much hate from the Halo community.

http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Drinol
http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Flood_Juggernaut

Melee combos (real ones) were seen in one of the (ancient by now) gameplay demos. Brutes have always been underwhelming, but it was in H2 where they were the most dull; they were nothing but bullet sponges when there was such potential. The Warthog variants we got pretty excited over didn't make it in, though we (sort of...) got the transport 'Hog in H3.

I'm sure there's more I'm not recalling right now, and more that I never knew about to begin with.

(Watching that gameplay trailer for H2 makes me wish they had kept the BR semi-auto. It was always the best overall weapon in H2 and H3, but if it had been semi-auto I would've actually found it the most fun to use, instead of just the most rewarding.)

I remember a story. During the later stages of Halo 2's development, someone in the Bungie offices had drawn a comic with a plane labelled "Halo 2" struggling to get airborne. Boxes, each labelled with something that was cut, were being pushed out of it's loading ramp to get it up in time for release. I'll see if I can find who told that story.

I remember the first time through Halo 2 on Legendary, I got stuck in the tunnel part of Metropolis, at a checkpoint, being shot by a marine with a rocket launcher. And it just looped me dying over and over and over and over... you get the idea. So I let it sit for a while, maybe an hour or more, cooked, ate, and after getting tired of watching myself get blown to -blam!- by the same dumbass incompetent, I restarted the level. That is one of my favorite memories from Halo.

The story part sounds funny. Yes, the H2 trailer is how the game should have been, both with the melee combo and the way the Battle Rifle worked. I liked the Battle Rifle, but it was more just because of its effectiveness. As far as fun, I prefered the Shotgun, SMG, or Spartan Laser.

After viewing the links, yes I remember all of that stuff from the Halo 2 Limited Edition extra disc bonus content. If you have it or can find it online, watch the audio commentary for Halo 2. Its pretty hilarious what Bungie says about their own games. The commentaries for Halo: CE and Halo 3 are pretty amusing as well.
Honestly though, I think Covenant Ship would have been one of the best levels of Halo 2, along side the demo trailer level. If only they had more time.

Live Long and Consume Banana Oil, ya' Spoony Bards!

Personally, I think that all of the Halo games are well made, but if I had to choose the one that is my least favorite, then that would be Halo 2, by sheer virtue of the Jackal snipers. In most Halo games, the biggest draw to them is the wide open space that the player can run around in, but Jackal snipers make that impossible to do. I like Halo Reach, and consider it to be the second best game in the series. I personally think that Halo: Combat Evolved is the defacto Halo game. Halo 3 was good, and ODST was the game that we wanted Halo 2 to be. Halo Wars was an interesting experience, but I wouldn't call it bad. And for some reason, the graphics of Halo 2 always seemed worse than those of Halo: Combat Evolved.

It was different, but I don't know if I'd say they were worse than Combat Evolved's graphics. I actually liked the way the Mark VI armor looked, and in some cases, I liked the way it looked more than H3.

Its because as a Spartan, you didn't feel like a Spartan. Yes, you're a Spartan III and not a Spartan II like the Master Chief, but you were still too weak and overwhelmed in Reach. It just didn't feel like Halo.
