I know the reply's are coming "Nothing is unhackable!" I know. But i think if there was a monthly payment system and the ban hammer was abundant with the resources MS has to make a anti-cheat system it could end up being ridiculous.

One of the hugest draws to me to pick up a controller and play a fps is the fact that there aren't hackers, and there is a ranking system. If MS could create a system like this, (probably using Vista to its advantage) I think they could make a huge community and rank in alot of dough monthly (as well as sell lots of operating systems).

Maybe a Uber-Punkbuster with Bungie ban hammer wrath.

BF2 has punkbuster but do you pay monthly? no
Steam has Valve Anti Cheat but do you pay monthly? no
Halo 2 PC has an anti cheat program but should you pay monthly? NO

same goes for ranking.

Second what fludbud says.

Also, going by Xbox live, it takes way to long to ban some people for a paid for service.

What you want is a very quick service, which will have someone look into it within a reasonable time if you have a greivance.

Its not going to be hackfree, and still have asses in it.

And god help them if they make it mandatory. Paying online for a non mmorp game? Ohh, better not.

A thought just occurred from this actually.

Would they be using Vista only to integrate a sort of pc version of Xbox live?

Doubtful, but only time will tell.

The Halo 2 banning tools are pretty effective for catching cheaters. But what would be the sense in paying monthly for Halo 2? You don't pay to play Halo 2 specifically online on the Xbox (you're paying for the Xbox Live SERVICE, which is everything on top of playing online).

Although, having said that, if matchmaking and stats make their way into Halo 2 PC, I can see the logic in charging extra - these both require a central server, which has to be paid for somehow.

I wouldn't mind paying a small fee (like $5 a month) for stats. Matchmaking... eh, maybe.

I wouldn't pay monthly. I might pay more upfront. Stats wouldn't be very accurate of you had to pay to get ranked.

ranked pc servers = a very bad idea, look at BF2, there are no successful independant servers because you can only advance in the game if you get a higher rank, which you can only get on ranked servers and the only people who can run ranked servers are people who are directly licenses by EA, or sublicensed at absurd prices by the original licensees. ranked pc servers = bad.

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

I wouldn't pay unless certain things happened.
I don't play MMOs because it is pay per month. The only one I would consider is The Matrix Online.
Anyway, I would only pay a LITTLE BIT every month if they had built in features like XBOX LIVE does. eg. a friends list, downloadable content for the game, and a good anticheat program like the VAC one. Not a crappy one like the XBL one that takes a while to ban people, and that doesn't ban by IP or even better, ban the XBOX.
Without at least the friends list and anticheat that bans thoroughly, I don't see a reason to pay.

Why should I pay? If Battlefield 2 has punkbuster AND stats a lot of stats for free after you buy the game. Other games also have this so why should you have to pay just because it's an outdated game and now coming to the pc, but you also have to buy Vista.
I wouldn't be suprised if M$ did this but I wouldn't buy it. There just sealing Halo2 pc's fate if they keep making us pay for extra stuff that should be free.

Why not? Do your stats change if you pay? No. They simply get compiled in the Database. It doesn't affect the accuracy. It may give a misleading representation of the overall abilities of H2PC players, but there won't be any gremlins biasing the stats of those who pay for their stats to be tracked.

No way is all i have to say, i don't want to pay for those features, and besides hack-free and ranking system isn't worth it, there are other games where they have ranking systems and, i don't think halo 2 is gonna be hack free either.

Well, Id pay a max of 10$ a month if Halo 2 PC has ALOT!! of nice features and had some maps and extra goodies planned for it. But one thing that may concern me is that there was a rumor from some ppl i know who work at support centers saying that Vista may have a subscription fees....but I really hope not!

Not quite fast enough for anything worth paying for yet I dont think.

And while I recognise some want stats and matchmaking, if thats made complusory, that would be another big, money grabbing mistake. But by all means, make it an option, that would be a good idea. Loads of people want stats.

No other games have a stats system as comprehensive as Halo 2's. Just look at the sort of stuff that's recorded.

I agree. PC gamers are completely different to console gamers, and aren't used to paying to play games online (I'm ignoring MMORPGs, as they're special). Plus, when you pay for Xbox Live, you feel like you're getting a lot more than you would with a single game.

Not a crappy one like the XBL one that takes a while to ban people, and that doesn't ban by IP or even better, ban the XBOX.

The banning tools that Halo 2 use are automatic, and ban people as soon as they have collected enough evidence that the person has been cheating. Unfortunately, though, said person won't be banned until they sign out of Xbox Live, so it can seem to take longer than it actually does. And the fact that Xbox Live has two month trials doesn't help the problem.

Xbox Live bans are a completely separate issue. It's good to note that only Xbox Live are able to ban individual Xboxes from the service - Bungie can only ban individual Gamertags from Matchmaking.

lol seems the NO's have it
why should we have to pay twice for a game that is released bugged to fuk and is going to need patched up to 1.7 like halo 1????

The stats might not be accurate because the number one ranked person, may, infact, actually suck compared to other people who play, but don't pay to get ranked.

I know all of that.
I just think that if Bungie bans someone who is modding, then they should pass it on to MS and then MS should ban the XBOX. If someone is modding, then they deserve to have to get a new XBOX instead of just finding another trial at the gamestore.
It might help MS get more money, too, because the banned person might decide to get a 360 instead of an XBOX.

BF2 does have a comprehensive stat tracker. It just doesn't give a detailed game stat like how many times u killed (insert gamertag)

both games have good stat tracking, but i'd like to see something more like a mini replay for each engangement. i'd like to know what i did wrong or how a person plays.
