Now this is JUST FOR FUN so troll if you will but I could care less since it's pretty stretchy.

SPOILER ALERT {FOR THOSE WHO DID NOT FINISH THE FIGHT}

_____________________________________________________________ __

In the end of Halo 3, Master Chief and Cortana are drifting off into space within a cryo-chamber room on the Forward unto Dawn.
After going to sleep, the camera pans out to put into perspective a planet of mechanical composition with lots of Easter eggs hidden along its surface. Then there is the Halo 4 trailer which shows the large planet opening and pulling in the other half of the forward unto dawn. Here is what i hope the plot is about and not a reliable theory. In the halo trilogy, guilty spark claims master chief is the reclaimer. What if that is due to the fact that he was? what if he was sent back eons to the flood/forerunner war and is destined to be the chosen one sent out by the forerunners to activate the halo rings as the reclaimer? There he will meet guilty spark and will be escorted by him to activate a ring? That would explain why guilty spark assumed master chief already knew about the halo rings and their functions. Just an idea. Although I do admit it is quite a stretch.

In essence, yes. think of it like this, had he not gone back, then maybe they send someone else to destroy the flood. but what if they fail? That's why if he does it, he's successful, then the rest of the story continues in the halo trilogy. In other words, born in the future to die in the past for mankind and the universe. I also heard that the terminals tell the tale of the reclaimer in halo 3 and that he thought his "beloved one is safe in a shield world". This led some of my friends to believe that it's not John. But it is a new trilogy, so there is room for character development and potential for personality changes.

But like i said, My theory is a long shot.

I must admit, this actually seems like an interesting theory. It doesn't make much sense, but at this point nothing about Halo 4 actually does.

Bwahahahahahahahaha. That was funny RKO. Are you an Orton fan? Any who... I hope that chief finds out - beyond popular belief - that there is a planet off the radar that has a spartan or two held up somewhere. That would be cool.

I am currently about to embark on a halo marathon and a read-athon for the games and trilogy to compile more info. The time travel part I cant back up. My original idea was the warp messed up and sent his half back. However, I have a new idea, what if the planet is a forerunner structure to travel back in time? But like I have been saying, very "ify" theory.

To lions: Onyx could apparently have Spartans locked inside. So I was told from those who read books. I have heard many theories of that being onyx, however, if that was onyx Cortana would know where they are. She didn't at the end of 3. And that most certainly isn't a human structure. In my opinion at least.

I would enjoy more feedback as it allows me to expand on my theory, make corrections, or even inspire other theories.

I used to be an Orton fan, that was back on 2008 though, and well, we still have Gray and Black Teams to be accounted for, maybe they could find them.

God no. Time travel is not going to happen.

The real story is MC being sent by mendicant Bias to the Forerunners and his interactions with them. Which must involve either the Forerunners being pissed at Humanity for all the destruction or them wanting to have MC dispatch an unknown enemy.

Time travel/dilatation already happened in the Halo universe though.

First Strike, a Forerunner Crystal made the UNSC Gettysburg go back in time to two weeks prior I believe, I'm not really sure how much time it was to be honest, but they did go back in time.
