I was just thinking. The reason not too many new people are joining is because no one knows about the site. I had to watch the old Halo 2 trailer several times to catch the name of the website back in the day. The only time you see it in Halo 2 is in a tip, while being matched. It just says something like join B.net, and show the watermark behind your GT. I was just hoping that Bungie will try to really advertise Bnet, in the next project, and on anything made by Bungie. Just a little thing that says Bungie.net on everything with their name on it. I think it could really help the column, if Bungie decides to try and bring in members.

Anyone else thinking the same?

dude, you pulled a jesus!

I guess I was lucky that I googled Halo 2 and caught this site...

Advertising is a sort of double-edged sword. On one hand the site gets loads of new members, increasing activity and possible improvement of the community.

Unfortunately, we'll also probably get the people that we would rather not have on the site... only in bigger numbers...

  • 02.13.2006 8:17 PM PDT

well, i believe that bnet had its website printed on the Halo 2 dvd thing, and that's how i made it here.

  • 02.13.2006 9:37 PM PDT

There are pretty obvious ads in the Halo and Halo 2 manuals.

But who buys a game and reads the whole manual? I buy a game, look at the guns and enemies and jump right in. If I like the game a lot I might stop and read the manuals, but not usually. And I don't really think this site needs to be advertised. It seems to be doing fine to me.

Exactly. If you like the game enough that you're going to was– ... spend a lot of time on the developer's forums, you're going to read the manual cover-to-cover.

I remember reading the Halo 2 manual on the train home after picking it up. I shouldn't have, since there were MINOR SPOILERS in the credits.

Also, I shouldn't have been reading it because Halo 2 was released during my leaving exams (they began on the 8th of November), and I should have been using every waking minute for study, but I was more miffed about the MINOR SPOILERS. :)

The names of certain characters in the game give you an idea of how the game will turn out. Like, 2401 Penitent Tangent made it obvious we were going to another Halo; all the named Covenant characters (as in, not just "Elites", "Jackals", "Grunts", etc) showed that there would be a larger emphasis on the Covenant side of the story. And the LE manual made it pretty clear we were going to play as the Arbiter. Things like that.

With something nearish to 1,600,000 members, i'd say the site has pretty good advertising. You have to remember that word gets around the internet pretty fast.

Seventh Column Contests

Back when Halo 1 came out thats when I noticed. Well I knew the website existed but never really cared until Halo 1 got more interesting.

I'm not that active, but never dead.

I'm pretty sure that most members on this site want only the people that are willing to read the entire manual/completely look into the game on this site.

Personally, I would rather have more literate people on this site, and I think that Bungie should maybe advertise less.

Or it could just bring in more morons... Its a double edged sword, in this case. I actually prefer it to be less crowded, meaning a more tight community.

I agree, more people=more crowded=crap.

I found this place by looking at the back of my Halo 1 box many years ago. Didn't have the internet at home until the exact day I joined, but have very fond memories of clicking onto the Truth and Reconcilliation everyday whilst in college to see if there was any new screenshots.

By the way, Kilroy you're such a loser.

The way I found Bungie.net was watching the E3 demo of Halo 2 on my Halo 1 disc. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to honor you guys with my presence :)

I don't really think Bungie needs to take drastic measures into advertising their site. You have to take the effect of more advertising into perspective. Like a lot of people have stated before:

More Users = More Problems

Although, its not like you can come onto a forum page and not expect morons. Its a givin no matter where you are on the internet.

More than likely there will be a big boost in Bungie.net users once their next project is announced though. This seems to happen all the time. I wonder if there will be a boost of users for Halo Vista...........

I only learnt about Bungie.net because one of my friends at school was going on the forums and asking how to sword lunge. I was trying to explain it to him but he just went on and asked.

And then I joined up a week or two later. Joined for Halo 2, ironically.

I joined because I happened to glance over at the "news at B.net" thing after leaving a pre-game lobby pissed at someone. So then I decided to check it out, about maybe 3 days later I joined.

This site really has enough advertising already. It's the 2,000 somethingith most visited site on the web, which is saying something.

Actually, I do. However, it seems like you don't know how many deleted and/or inactive accounts there are.

I fail to see what that's got to do with people not joining due to advertising. Deleted/inactive members clearly joined this site in the first place, right?

Kilroy, I think you mean make the site better then. Having them come and keeping them here are two seperate worlds.
