First off, this could go in either the Septagon, because it's site-related, or the Underground, because it's related to oldschool games. Seeing as the Underground consists of Halo 3 threads as far as the eye can see, I chose this one.

Who here agrees with the idea that a special news story (like the one about Havok a while back; not a WWU) could be made, entitled 'Frogblast from the Past' or something like that? Basically what this story would do is push the Marathon trilogy into the limelight by putting it in a high-traffic zone (the front page) that many people would see. Think of the boost in players Marathon would get! It would be great! Basically what the story would consist of is an introduction to the series, some general history, and then links to downloads and directions for unzipping them and starting the game. It would probably not consist of a whole lot of work on Frankie's part; rather, I think that selected Marathon fans would congregate and piece together a suitable article.

I personally think it would be a great idea. Your thoughts?

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

That would be very good. Although it might put a serious strain on TrilogyRelease.Bungie.Org's bandwidth, I support anything that raises awareness of Marathon's sweet gaming goodness.

Well, its not like Frankie does a whole lot of work anyway.........he just sits there and people bring him cookies because they feel sorry for him. That bastard.

On topic now, I think that would be a good idea. It would get Marathon out in the open, and personally, I would rather see topics like "How do I get past the crushing trash room" than "HALO 3 IDeAS's ROFL LOLZ!!!!"

But that may just be me......

Humpday challenges are Top Stories, which have their own unique picture, rather than the icons for garden variety news items.

Very cool.

But the number of active Marathon players at Bungie must be pretty small now. Perhaps they're secretly terrified of being repeatedly pwned by Team MBO.

It wouldn't have to be Marathon. There are still loads of Mythers at Bungie - heck, the Myth community is where most of the Halo team came from - and besides, Myth multiplayer is about six kazillion times less lag-tastic than Marathon is online.

I was actually seriously concidering reviving the idea of a old skool week where we'd hold net games/tournaments and maybe do a write up on some of these old games.

It would take quite some work to organise, but i'm up for making this happen. What do y'all think?

Ping time in Marathon > Ping in Myth

Marathon multiplayer was designed for high speed ethernet. Myth multiplayer was designed to be hosted on 56k connections.

And sure, Marathon is a great game, one which sucked me in completely, but even though Marathon got a 3 year head-start, Myth has spent more time on my hard drive than any other game. It's the only game I've owned for which I've never really had a period in which I've been completely bored with it.

I'd take part ;).

Anyway, I can't really say I've ever liked any kind of RTX game apart from Age of Empires - now that was good,

I never meant a humpday challenge, although that certainly would be a great idea.

What I meant was that we would make like an 'introduction' article, where members that come to this site for Halo would learn about the Marathon trilogy, why it's awesome, and stuff like that. We then would provide links to specially-made guides in the forums for installing and trouble shooting and stuff like that.

Since it would be on the front page in the top stories box for a couple of days, lots of people would read and get the Marathon trilogy. Then, finding they love it, they would continue playing it. Voila, the rebirth of the Marathon community.

I would prefer that it be left as Marathon at this time, although making one for Myth, Oni, or the oldschool-oldschool games would be a good idea to put away for later. This is for several reasons, the foremost being that Marathon is completely free, and the other games are hard to find in stores, as well as people like myself have parents that are paranoid about putting their credit card on the internet, so eBay is ruled out. That, coupled with the fact that it's the only oldschool series by Bungie that I've played, rules the other games out.

If people actually think that this is a good idea, then I'll make a group specifically for this article, where members can bat around ideas for the article. I'll probably do the core writing aspect, as writing is sort of my thing, with people helping with the technical information.

Remember, if this is going to be on the front page, we will need two things. One, a good team of members who will make this article worthy of being in the top news spot, and also a little cooperation from Frankie. Or whoever organizes the news.

But, remember a while back to New Years, Achronos posted a news article with a Chinese New Year icon, and that is not on the list.

Right, so I made the group:

I won't be able to make this article by myself; I'll need cooperation with a bunch of members. Also, if you really can't contribute anything or just don't plan to, don't bother joining.

Anything that directs more focus towards Bungie's oldskool games is a good idea, if you ask me.

So now that I am back from my rather un-warranted hiatus, we can return to the matter at hand. I truly think that this is a great opportunity to re-ignite the Marathon community. Although Frankie gave it a nod in his Valentine's Day special story, I think it deserves more than just a paragraph. Simply linking to the trilogy release site doesn't do a whole lot; the average newcomer can't figure out how to get Marathon working without help. So, if you are interested in helping make this project get off the ground, join this group.

Note to moderators: I am not advertising this group. I could care less how many members join, as long as the ones who do join are willing to help out.

Ok, well as much as i think this is an awesome idea, i would like to take it further. As some of you know and as i said in an earlier post, i am arranging an old skool awareness week.

So, if you wanted to pull a team together to work on providing links to marathon downloads and perhaps to also help out with arranging marathon net games for the week, it would be great.

Oh and just so you know, i'm up to the marathon stage in a general history i'm writing up.
No details on when this week will be exactly, but let me know.

That's a great idea. We would kick off the week with the article to get everyone started, and then follow up with some humpday challenges like Reiginko mentioned, as well as arranged net games and anything else you have planned.

All in all, I really like the idea. Bring Oldschool games to the front, show them off, and get more interest from the community. I too would like to get some oldschool humpdays, however...

I think it's a good idea and would bring more gamers into the Marathon arena. Definitly some humpday challenges to follow up the news article.
