Subject: www.BungieAerospace.com the greatest fake site ever?

Bungie Aerospace is a real thing. Bungie have spoken about it and will be announcing it soon on Bungie day. But what about this www.bungieaerospace.com web site that we have all been checking over the last few months for the suprise?

Its Origins
I don't remember there ever being an announcement of the site. It just appeared. It had a spectacular design and was very cryptic. This made it look legit. I mean we also got sites like bungieaerospace.org which was cryptic but lacked the visual flair. It also had a count down which ended up as a huge rick roll. This lead to the site being closed down by Bungie due to copyright I'm guessing.

But aerospace.com (bungieaerospace.com will be revered to as aerospace.com to save space) hasn't lied to us. Or has it?

The Name
Bungie.net's whois records show this http://www.whois.net/whois/bungie.net.com yet Aerospace's show this http://www.whois.net/whois/bungieaerospace.com

What is this? Well Bungie.net and aerospace.com are registered through different registrars. This is EXTREMELY odd, it is rare that you would use a different registrar to what you currently use especially Network Solutions, who are more prestigious/reputable than Go Daddy. To make matters worst other domains registered by Bungie are also on Network Solutions not Go Daddy.

SeventhColumn.org http://www.whois.net/whois/seventhcolumn.org.com
Bungie.com http://www.whois.net/whois/bungie.com
Bungiestore.com http://www.whois.net/whois/bungiestore.com.com
Nobleactual.com http://www.whois.net/whois/nobleactual.com

All those legit sites have been filed under Network solutions. Something fishy is going on here.

The server it's self is not on the same IP as bungie.net's IP address is 66.62.238.10 that is located in Washington, Kirkland. aerospace.com's IP is 173.201.53.184 and is located on the eastcoast of America. Thats odd because when you have a web server you can host multiple sites on it. You don't need entirely different datacenters. Infact aerospace.com uses Go Daddy's web servers, not Bungie's.

We need to go deeper.

The site it's self
Now we all know Bungie in the past was under Microsoft. This gave them a lot of technology to play with. One of these technologies was ASP.NET. I believe I remember Achronos saying Bungie.net was one of the first sites to use ASP.NET. Now when you use a code base, you become used to it. You make it better. You don't just start from scratch and use a new language which even if you are capable at using. Well, aerospace.com is running on an Apache webserver and using PHP. Bungie.net and it's other sites use IIS with ASP.NET. That's total opposites.

How do I know this?
http://www.bungieaerospace.com/news

That's WordPress, a PHP blogging software package. That brings me to another point. Bungie have built upon a Bungie.net's forums and news software for over 10 years. I highly doubt they would just throw it away and use firstly a new software package, but in a completely different language.

Let's delve down into the basic HTML and CSS of the site. Bungie.net uses absolute links to the file system. aerospace.com doesn't. Anyone who has created a large enough website will know that this becomes a nightmare. Then we get to the CSS, in a workplace where the employees write code, there is always a common way that all employees should write their code so it's standard to the company so any employee can come along and make changes etc.

Bungie.net has it's CSS like this http://seventhcolumn.bungie.net/base_css/base.css?ver=2.0.416 3.16802
aerospace's is like this
http://www.bungieaerospace.com/css/splashpage.css
These are completely different and I doubt the webteam would change their writing style so easily.
Why is it still online?

Why hasn't Bungie said it's fake then!
Well aerospace.com unlike other fake sites that have been popping up hasn't actually claimed to be Bungie or Promise some sort of release.

TL;DR
bungieaerospace.com is fake.

EDIT:
Here is a thread on Bungie.org, Loius Wu makes a good point.

Look, I hate to be a downer on this one - and I'm not saying for a minute that these AREN'T Bungie's domains - but there is NO evidence whatsoever in this information that 1) makes bungieaerospace.com any more legit than it already was, or 2) connects the other domains to that one.

GoDaddy is a HUGE registrar - they've got more than 40 million domains under registration, according to Wikipedia. And a significant percentage use the Domains By Proxy service. (Hell, I've used it. And my domains registered with it look EXACTLY THE SAME AS THESE.)

Bungieaerospace.com was registered in February 2010. The new copyright stuff all went up on July 27. The new domains weren't registered until October. Bungie has NO history of buying up the .org versions of their domains. (That's not to say they won't start now - just that if you're going to speculate, you might as well use historical data to extrapolate from).

These could be Bungie-registered - or they could be something totally fan-driven, by someone who did the copyright search between July and October.

There is NOTHING tying these domains to Bungie specifically.

It could be fake.
Or maybe Bungie just wants you to think that it is.

All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

Ok.

Don't bother posting if you've nothing to contribute.

I found this very interesting, what was your first "clue" so to speak?

  • 06.17.2011 3:28 PM PDT

Bungie likes to screw with people. Frankly, I love it. Maybe they're loling right now on how someone found this and is over analyzing it.

Do you know what kind of hat I'm wearing?

A party hat; you don't get one. An honor will this party be, a party in your honor, for your honor. Some of Tfear's personal guards are going to be there. You'll be introduced shortly.

Prepare to die.

I know nearly nothing about web design, but your theory seems plausible to me.

I also noticed that the overlay on the website is a .gif.

When a user linked to bungieaerospace.com/news, then I was like "I need to go deeper". And started researching.

Regarding the bit about bungieaerospace.com using Wordpress, keep in mind that nobleactual.com uses Tumblr. The site could just be a promotional site or whatever, with the real stuff going on here on bungie.net.

You bring up some interesting points, but I believe that there's likely explanations for all of it, and that this site is legit. Guess we'll find out soon.

Yes but tumblr isn't software you install on your server and run it from there. Nobleactual.com was basically just a link to the tumblr blog of 2 guys from Bungie. Mostly done because tumblr is a good site to blog on and you can establish followers.

Not all GIFs are animated, in fact most used aren't. This image is just a normal static image.

We believe that the universe is unbounded: this is not the same as infinite: the 2-D surface of a sphere, wrapped around a 3rd dimension, has a finite size, but has no end. If you start off in a given direction on the surface of a sphere, you could return to your start point without having to turn around -- you simply go all the way around. But wouldn't that mean the universe has an escape velocity like the earth?

Yes. No.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

Your claim does certainly arouse suspicion--and I fully agree with you 100%--to reiterate, I do find it rather odd that bungieaerospace.com wouldn't be hosted on Bungie's servers. Bungie has plenty of dedicated servers, with terabytes of space, it makes no sense they wouldn't be hosting it themselves. Plus they're using GoDaddy hosting - which is absolutely terrible, I have firsthand experience on that front. Why would they be using WordPress in the first place? Bungie.net practically has its own news software, it seems more logical to use something that your company developed, instead of free blogging software. GoDaddy has Windows-based servers that obviously support ASP.NET. It's so strange, I never though of this.

Now what you said about the IP being in the East Coast, remember a few months ago when it came out that, I think, the Bungie Aerospace Corporation was registered in Delaware? Have you done an IP search up on the address? If it winds up in Delaware we may have a connection, I could be wrong however, just a speculation.

Great find, Apoc.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

bungieaerospace.com is fake.

All that info makes me believe that the site really isn't the new big thing everyone thinks it is. You've provided convincing evidence that the site was not coded or designed by Achronos or the other members of the web team. But that doesn't mean it's fake. I'm thinking it's a website set up by a company other than Bungie, perhaps a PR firm, to be used for information on Bungie Aerospace (whatever that is) leading up to the "product" launch. Sort of like Halo3.com, ect.

Lol I read all of this, and I still understand nothing. I'm sure the site's Bungie's doing.

Maybe it is real and Bungie just opened up a new studio on the East Coast because they can. And then they made a website for it!
