I was reading up on the Terminals/ Mendicant Bias this morning before work this morning and, even though a lot of this is conjuncture, it seems like it could add up.
If one goes through the Terminals in Halo 3 we learn that Mendicant Bias tries to atone for his rampancy and betrayal of the Forerunners by help Master Chief. However, it doesn't seem like he does anything within the game as noticeable assistance. But, with the game's standard ending, and the legendary ending he may have set the stage for the Halo 4 we're getting or possible the story Bungie had wrote.
My theory is that Bias closed the portal back to Earth to sever the Foward Unto Dawn, splitting it in two, with the end MC was in heading towards the unknown planet. To support this I have some dialogue from Terminal 7 over a few difficulties:
Normal:
> CONN. > . > . > NO. THERE IS MORE. > BUT YOU ARE NOT WORTHY. > . > . > NOT YET. > .
This implies Bias had more to show the MC then was available on the Ark/new Halo 04.
Legendary:But I want something far different from you, Reclaimer.
Atonement.
And so here at the end of my life, I do once again betray a former master. The path ahead is fraught with peril. But I will do all I can to keep it stable - keep you safe. I'm not so foolish to think this will absolve me of my sins. One life hardly balances billions.
But I would have my masters know that I have changed.
And you shall be my example.
I, personally, don't think the path he speaks of is the road to fight the Gravemind, but something deeper and I think it is helping him find more Forerunner technologies faster. One problem could be the interpretation of keep it stable, which if applied to the portal, or maybe even the Halo ring rebuilt, could make this all seem really silly.
