OP in a nutshell: I don't like Contact Harvest because I don't understand English well enough.
The next part is directed to OP.
Really, by your description it sounds like a totally different book than what I am currently reading.
First of all, how did Johnson sound boring? Contact Harvest showed him as a man with actual emotions, as a man who really thinks about the morality of his doings. Not just some super badass space marine who just kills aliens all the time like the games did.
There is this thing known as language skills. judging by your opinions, you either aren't very good with English or just can't concentrate/have a very bad imagination. Joseph Staten described things very well. So well, that I could always see the places in my mind.
I see nothing wrong with the part that tells about training of the militia. It's a good way to tell backstories of the militia men. Even my favorite part of the book was probably their live fire excercise.
How is it hard to understand what caused their meeting with the Brutes go terribly wrong? First it was all going well until the Grunts killed Osmo, he still managed to fire few bullets out of his Assault Rifle and manged to warn everyone. This of course caused the situation to break and a firefight started.
So, a one page with little love ruined part of teh story for you? I agree it was a bit unnecessary part, but it doesn't bother me that much. It doesn't do any harm for the story of the book overall.
Again, I simply don't undrerstand the problem with the battle settings. Staten clearly described the places and I at least understood the situation very well at every moment.
Overall teh book was very good, maybe not the best Halo book, but definitely good. It's very entertaining to read. It also adds a lot to the canon. For example, it describes very well daily life at High Charity and also gives information on how Covenant's government system works. There are lots of interesting characters like Da-Dab, Lighter Than Some, Johnson, Maccabeus and many more.
I really don't know what you're talking about.
